Kent is a county in South East England, and one of the home counties. It borders East Sussex, Surrey and Greater London and has a defined boundary with Essex in the middle of the Thames Estuary. The ceremonial county boundaries of Kent include the shire county of Kent and the unitary borough of Medway.
The historic county of Kent has something which will appeal to everyone. It is steeped in history and known world wide as the 'Garden of England' due to the wealth of hop gardens and orchards in the area.
There are numerous water-sport activities on offer and the beautiful coastline has an array of award winning beaches.
Places of interest and attractions to visit include animal parks, castles, cathedrals, churches, historic houses, maritime heritage, museums, steam trains and much, much more.
The Whitstable area
The charming seaside town of Whitstable is located in the Northeast of Kent. The town is situated approximately five miles north of the city of Canterbury and two miles west of Herne Bay. From the seashore, the town of Whitstable also boasts excellent views of the Isle of Sheppey which is only a short distance away.
One of the main characteristics of the quaint town of Whitstable is the booming oyster business that it has all year round. Oyster harvesting started in the Roman times and is a continued pastime in the town of Whitstable, as well as providing the local bars and restaurants with fresh oysters and other seafood daily, Whitstable also celebrates the importance of oyster to their town with a festival.
Visitors love the town's bohemian charm with its gift shops, cafes, restaurants, fashion outlets, delicatessens, galleries and a never ending list of independent shops. You will be spoilt for choice. When you reach the beach there is a pub on it full of after shopping delights. Whitstable’s harbour has an interesting history including diving, shipbuilding and fishing.
Along the coast are grassy slopes down to the sea, allowing bracing walks along the promenade to enjoy the bracing sea air. There's also a chance too to get some wonderful views of Whitstable's skyline.
Whitstable has secured a special place in the hearts and minds of all who visit the town.
As well as the Oyster Festival and the famous Harbour Street what is there to do in Whitstable you may wonder...but fear not, there is no lack of things to entertain and occupy your time while on your holiday. The Horsebridge Centre puts on a wide variety of events for guests to enjoy from art-house film evening to comedy nights; there is something for everyone to sink their teeth into. The beautiful Whitstable Playhouse still put on a variety of plays and other performances throughout the year, which is perfect for after dinner entertainment. If music and live bands are more your scene then you will not be disappointed as most of Whitstable’s local pubs and bars regularly host live music events such as The Old Neptune, The Duke of Cumberland and The East Kent.

The location is great. Beach just down the street, restaurants and shops also. The garden is a real plus, space for children and dog to run and play, a table to eat out. But inside, the duvets were lumpy, the kitchen/dining equipment bitty and there was a strong smell of garlic! The cleaners had missed (how?!) the unwashed garlic press in a drawer! Hmm... A pity as this could be a really pleasant holiday/weekend rental. The person I arranged the rental with was helpful and accommodating, however the "manager" that I had to contact about arrival time etc. was not overly helpful (e.g. "Arrival time is 3pm unless no booking the night before. How will I know? Look on the website." In the event, I did, saw no reservation so turned up at 12.00 to find the cleaners in as there had been a booking!). The cleaner rather strangely removed most of the dvds, leaving us with just one children's box set. |
