Book nowThe South East England / Kent region
Kent is known as the Garden of England in recognition of its attractive countryside and wealth of historic houses and gardens.
Shopping facilities in Kent are plentiful with regular food and craft markets held in many of the towns and villages. There are extensive shopping centres in Bromley, Canterbury, Tunbridge Wells and Bluewater (Europe's largest indoor shopping mall) and the world famous West End of London is easily accessible.
Kent offers superb opportunities for walking and cycling in delightful surroundings, including the North Downs and the High Weald. Knole Park, a magnificent 1000 acre deer park and home to the 16th century Knole House, can be found in Sevenoaks. Other sites of interest in Kent include Hever Castle, childhood home of Anne Boleyn; Leeds Castle, "The Loveliest Castle in the World", and historic Canterbury Cathedral.
The Whitstable area
Whitstable lies on a part of the Kent coastline that has been associated with fishing and most notably with oysters for nearly 2,000 years. Fisherman’s huts still stand on the beach that edges this delightful old coastal town, full of intriguing alleyways with eccentric names and pretty weatherboard cottages.
The bustling High Street and Harbour Street are lined with an array of boutiques, delicatessens, art galleries, restaurants and even an old-fashioned hardware shop. Maritime paraphernalia sits happily with the contemporary art scene to create an eclectic mix of past and present.
Whitstable celebrates is historic maritime heritage each year with a Regatta, Carnival and the Whitstable Oyster Festival. The harbour, built in the 1830’s, is still a commercial port and early risers can watch the day’s catch being unloaded from the fishing boats before eating it later in the day in one of the many popular seafood restaurants.
Slightly further afield is the vibrant city of Canterbury which is a lovely medieval city with the very best of both worlds! An historic cultural centre with two theatres, open air Shakespeare in the summer months in the stunning grounds of St Augustines Abbey, river trips in punts and walking ghost tours of the City originally founded by the Romans. There are many museums to visit including the Museum of Canterbury which is sited opposite the cottage. Outside Canterbury too, there are many historic places to visit with Kent having more castles than any other county in England.
The new Whitefriars shopping development offers a good range of boutiques and high street shops with the many smaller streets surrounding the centre offering individual specialist shops.
