The Northern England / Yorkshire/Yorkshire Dales region
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline. A haven for walkers, the area also boasts great cycling, gliding, riding and fishing, whilst North York Moors Railway is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful scenery in a more relaxed setting.
Visit the market towns of Pickering or Thirsk; the latter famous for its links with the English country vet and author, James Herriot. Nearby, some of Yorkshire’s best-loved villages including Thornton-le-Dale and Rosedale Abbey offer a taste of village life, as does Goathland, ‘Aidensfield’ in the TV series ‘Heartbeat’. Finally, stop off at Castle Howard and Duncombe Park, two of Britain’s most historic stately homes situated in breathtaking parklands and gardens.
The cliffs, sandy beaches and smugglers’ caves of the Yorkshire coastline are a haven for beachcombers and coastal walkers. Discover the quaint fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes, with their brightly coloured fishing boats. Finally, there’s the historic city of York, with its interactive Viking Centre, Roman walls, medieval streets, vibrant shops and gothic York Minster cathedral.
The Whitby / Lealholm area
In the centre of the lovely Esk Valley is the village of Lealholm. This charming little settlement is set within the North York Moors National Park and is just a 15-minute drive from the magnificent Yorkshire Coast. With everything a visitor could possibly need, this quaint village boasts a post office, shop, pub and tearoom-restaurant. This lovely rural settlement is often host to a flock of wandering moorland sheep who roam the nearby hillsides and riverbanks. This same, stunning scenery provides a range of excellent walking and cycling routes in all directions. The quaint fishing villages of Staithes and Runswick Bay are certainly worth visiting, whether you walk or drive. The wonderful beaches at Sandsend and the ancient port of Whitby are also within easy traveling distance, and offer traditional seaside attractions.

Guestbook for 1762 - Swallow Cottage
We desperately needed a relaxing break away and Swallow cottage was the perfect place to relax and unwind in a spotlessly clean and very comfortable cottage which had amazing views. It really was what it said on the tin and more. Fabulous! The reservations specialist at Sykes was really helpful - especially as we were literally making last minute arrangements ringing to book the morning we wanted to go on holiday.
