The Northern England / Yorkshire / Yorkshire region
All the following villages are part of The Cleveland Way Walk.
WHITBY - is a small town which has its own character and picturesque charm based on its spectacular history as a seaport. The town is famous for its rich cultural and architectural heritage:- its 7th century Abbey, its yards, ancient alleyways, cobbled side streets, Captain Cook`s seafaring life and Bram Stoker was so inspired by Whitby that he chose it as a back drop for his classic Novel Dracula. It is now famous as the Bi-annual venue for the largest Goth festival in the world.
STAITHES - This quaint and unspolit fishing village consists of cottages huddled together on steep cliffs over looking a tiny harbour. Captain Cook lived here at the age of seventeen while he was an apprentice to a grocer and draper in a shop.
SANDSEND - A lovely upmarket seaside village. Fabulous beach for frollicking, digging sandcastles, lazing around on or for taking a walk by the sea. In the early morning you can watch the fishermen collect the previous nights catch of Wild Salmon or Lobsters. There is a friendly pub (The Hart), a superb restaurant (Estbek House) three lovely cafes and a shop/Deli (Sandsend Stores selling everything from Daily Newspapers and Magazine's to all sorts of Gourmet delights for foodie's!)
ROBIN HOODS BAY - Robin Hoods Bay on the coast off the Whitby to Scarborough road is a picturesque and historic village notorious for its smuggling history. Smuggling was rife and many of the buildings have secret passageways so that contraband could be passed secretly from the bottom of the village to the top without going outside. The narrow winding streets and alleys conceal many beautiful cottages. The haphazard positions of the cottages attract many photographers and artists.
RUNSWICK BAY - Eight miles north of Whitby, this attractive little seaside village with its white painted cottages and red roofed cottages perched in improbable positions on the steep hill side is a favourite spot sailing enthusiasts, water skiers and artists.
Whitby area
Whitby offers miles of sandy beaches, fishing trips from the harbour and many specialists` shops filled with crafts, antiques, artist`s shops, and handmade local jet jewellery.
The town is divided into the West and East side with the River Esk running through the middle. The swing Bridge joins the two sides opening at high tides to let the Yachts and fishing boats through. Both sides are completely different which provides a fantastic contrast for all visitors.
The East side is a maze of cobbled little streets, Whitby Abbey, the piers and The Lifeboat, as well as lovely shops, The Market Place with local & French markets and the award winning White Horse & Griffin, a 16th Century Coaching Inn, providing delicious meals with locally sourced produce and, of course, freshly caught fish.
The West side houses the fish market, the amusement arcades and some lovely shops and wine bars. Whitby has something to suit all tastes - award winning sea food restaurants, continental delights, olde worlde English tea rooms and traditional sea-shanty inns / pubs serving local produce. For those dining at home there are supermarkets and many local shops around the area.
