The Northern England / Yorkshire / Yorkshire region
Whitby is 45 miles from the beautiful walled city of York, with its famous Minster. Not far from inland market towns and villages such as Pickering, Helmsley, Northallerton and Guisborough. It is reached by crossing the abundant purple heather - laden North Yorkshire Moors where you can also experience the thrill of a full size steam locomotive, or the power of a diesel engine on a nostalgic journey through spectacular countryside on The North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway. Goathland (Aidensfield to those of you that watch Heartbeat!) is 10 miles from Whitby. Here you will find some lovely walks, especially down to Beck Hole and up to the Mallion Spout
Whitby area
Whitby is a lovely old fishing town. It has become rather trendy in recent years but still keeps all of its old charm. Whitby's skyline is dominated by the ruins of St. Hilda's Abbey, high on Whitby's East Cliff. Spreading below Whitby, a maze of quaint alleyways and narrow cobbled streets run down to the busy quayside. Here you can find lovely shops and restaurants, in particular The White Horse & Griffin, a restaurant with rooms. It was in this 360 year old coaching inn that Captain Cook hired and fired all his crews for his trips on The Endeavour ship to find the new world. It is also here that you will find delicious meals and gorgeous rooms! Whitby has beautiful beaches, a lovely links Golf course, plenty of walking along the Cleveland Way and delightful villages to visit. Goathland, Sandsend, Runswick & Robin Hood's Bay being within easy reach.Whitby Gothic Weekend is a twice-yearly festival for Goths in Whitby and it has now grown into one of the most popular gothic events in the world.
