Northern England region

North Yorkshire has many attractions which make it a wonderful destination for the discerning holidaymaker. With roughly 40% of the county covered by the National Parks of the North Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Dales it is an area of outstanding natural beauty with Sandsend itself just North of the fascinating fishing port of Whitby and the very old smugglers' village of Robin Hoods Bay. Further down the coast is the elegant seaside resort of Scarborough..

Whitby

Located at the foot of Lythe bank Sandsend is a picturesque village with cottages set against a backdrop of cliffs and two meandering streams which lead to the sandy beach.

The beach featured as one of Britain's 20 best beaches by Telegraph Travel in July 2011, Sandsend beach is "Set against a backdrop of grassy cliffs, where the wide sweep of beach from Whitby ends, this stretch is quieter and prettier than its famous neighbour. Children play in the little becks that flow across the sand and ducks waddle across the green in charming Sandsend village. This is a great place for fossil hunting at low tide." Sandsend Beach is also a popular destination for surfers with the village having its own surf school for any aspiring beginners.

The village is served by a local shop, Sandsend Stores, and Tides Beach Shop (with surf school) (email: sandsendsurfschool@hotmail.co.uk; ). There are also excellent restaurants (such as Estbek House with its award winning restaurant and extensive fine wine selection, www.estbekhouse.co.uk), The Hart Inn which is a traditional pub with good food, teashops and an art gallery.

About 2 miles to the south is the historic fishing town of Whitby: dominated by the cliff top ruins of its 13th century Abbey and famous for its connections with Captain Cook and Dracula. There are many good restaurants there and numerous very good fish and chips shops including the celebrated Magpie Cafe. There is a good golf course on the cliffs between Sandsend and Whitby. Further to the south is Robin Hoods Bay and the lovely Victorian seaside town of Scarborough (home to the Stephen Joseph Theatre where Alan Ayckbourn premieres all his plays).

A visit to the area would not be complete without a trip to the North Yorkshire Moors (the spectacular scenery was recently featured on Richard Wilson's 'Great British Drives' programme). The NYMR steam railway operates between Whitby and Pickering taking in some tremendous scenery which featured in the popular television series "Heartbeat" and the James Herriot books.

"A large, comfortable & well-equipped property with plenty of space for all the famly."

We were delighted with our stay at the Pavilion. It had previously been a tennis pavilion, hence the name, and came with a large, enclosed front garden, facing the sea and a great space for children to run around and for outdoor games, plus a patio with a large outdoor garden table and chairs. There is a shared gravel drive leading to the property with reserved parking for 3-4 cars and is a great bonus not to having to pay for a car park or search for street parking. Unfortunately the steepish ramp from the driveway up to the cottage gate required a bit of effort with a pushchair and I imagine could be more of a struggle for someone in a wheelchair or with walking difficulties. This is in addition to walking up the hill to the cottage from the beach/Sandsend, albeit only a 3-4 min walk.

There are three double bedrooms, two on the ground floor, plus a double and two twin bedrooms upstairs. The twin bedded rooms seem slightly smaller and combined with the sloping ceiling, probably best suit younger members of the family. We all commented on how particularly comfortable the beds are. The great bonus is five bathrooms, one is a wet room and one has a bath, so ample facilities for a large group! However, we found the wash-hand basin in the wet room a bit on the small side. There is a modern kitchen which is very well equipped for cooking family meals with plenty of pans, crockery and utensils – even two fridges! There is a flat screen tv in the living room and plenty of comfortable seating. Other nice touches include provision of free wifi, board games, books, childrens toys, cds/dvds and outdoor games.

Sandsend is quiet and quaint, with sandy beach which is safe for children. We ate at the pub and bistro both of which provided good food at reasonable prices. Whitby is less than10 mins away by car or you can catch the bus from the village which runs every half hour.

All in all, we had a wonderful stay. I can recommend the Pavillion for a very comfortable stay.

"Amazing property"

On arriving at the property I felt very smug as my friends arrived and saw where we were staying. All the bedrooms had individual bathrooms either en suite or across the corridor which with 7 adults and 2 kids was essential. The communal rooms were spacious and easily accommodated us all with huge comfy sofas and the kitchen dinner had a great feel with a table which easily sat us all for long leisurely meals. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you could possibly want. The garden was also a great sizer and was safe to let the toddlers run round in. I would thoroughly recommend this property to anyone!!

"Marvellous modern property in a great location."

I rented the property to celebrate a family event attended by 4 generations. it was so good it felt like home as soon as we arrived and remained that way throughout our stay. The accommodation was superb with all the facilities you need. It was warm, cosy & clean.
The location was excellent. It was close to the beach and and a very nice local pub around the corner. As we visited in January some of the local businesses were closed but we were prepared for that and besides Whitby is close by.
It was easy to book and the service met the high standards of the property itself. I would highly recommend it.
