"Excellent location but with the odd tut here and there"
Situated in Whitby's Old Town, you're right in the heart of things with Awd Tut's Cottage. It can, as a result, be a little noisy but that didn't bother us.If you know Whitby, then… More
Many thanks for this review. We have mixed feelings on this one as it's not good bit it's also not bad!
The guests gave us a rating of 4/5 which therefore makes us believe that we hopefully have things more right than wrong.
To be fair, we do advertise the cottage as what it originally intended to be. That is a Grade two listed, ex fishermans cottage, built in 1640 and around the time Charles 1st was beheaded.
The cottage is just as described, a quaint, 4 storey dwelling with oak beams and 'olde worlde character'. We usually get booked because of the type, age of cottage and our pretty good location right by the harbour.
We do endeavour to get a good cross section of reviews. This gives everyone the ability to make a well informed choice of whether or not to book with us.
We hope people do want to stay and also hope that they want to come back again.

"Not suitable for small children"
If I'm honest we were disappointed with this accommodation in the middle of Whitby, but lets start with the good bits.It is right in the centre of whitby and the owners were easy to contact. The… More
Well, we suppose that this review shows that we can't please everyone all of the time even though we try our best to do so.
We try to make staying at our cottage an enjoyable, pleasurable experience for everyone who books with us. That starts with the ease of booking, immediate confirmation of any payments at each step of the way, sending out step by step directions to find the property and lastly, helpful information regarding the cottage key and one further set of directions just to be on the safe side. We are also, always on hand at the end of the phone should anyone have any problems at any time.
In the review it says that this cottage is 'not suitable for small children'! We would like to think that all potential guests would read and understand the extensive literature on our own website.
We advertise this property as a four storey ex fishermans cottage. This implies there are obviously steps. Because of this we supply two sets of childrens safety gates free of charge to prevent any accidents whilst at the cottage. We even show a floor 'layout' plan on the website showing all floors! Many families with children keep coming back here as 'returning' visitors, so we have obviously got something right! The stairs are also not steep but simply, normal, average stairways although there are three of them.
The cottage was also painted throughout, inside and out, only last year so we know for a fact it is not worn or tired.
We offered a cut price, low cost offer to the guests who wrote this review, reducing the cost to them by a full 46%.
We can't win-over or please everyone all the time but we will keep trying.
We'll be eternally optimistic until the end.

Thanks for a nice review. The cottage is well placed and near to everything. It suits us too when we stay there as there's no need to walk far or take taxis etc to see all of Whitby.

"Definitely NOT what we expected"
There's not much to say really in regards to Awd Tuts Cottage. Whilst the place itself was in a prime location in the centre of Whitby; the actual cottage was not what we expected in the slightes… More
As the owners of this holiday cottage we believe that this review is malicious and also suspicious in its nature. The review entered only recently in March 2013 was actually for a stay in September 2012 which was some 7 months previous.
Eventually tracing through our records we found the guests stayed only 3 days (2 nights) of a 6 night stay. On the third day they rang us up and at that point complained that the cottage was not 'good' enough for them and that they wanted their money back.
We were at the cottage within 2 hours of thier complaint (we have a 60 mile round trip to get there) but the guests already had thier suitcases packed to go home, 3 full days early. They would not even talk to us at all and were intent on leaving the cottage. They had made up thier mind, totally, and in advance of anything that we could do for them would not be good enough.
Strange behaviour to stay 3 days and then complain!!!
We believe that these guests were 'con persons, simply trying it on to see what they could get for nothing. Maybe this approach has worked for them in the past?
Their complaint was so far removed from any truth whatsoever, that now, by submitting a review some 7 months later on, should not really be admitted to our Trip Advisor review page.
We absolutely go out of our way in ensuring that our guests comfort is paramount. Sadly, there will always be people like this, who, if they do not get their way, will try to ensure that well meaning and caring hosts such as ourselves are made to suffer the consequences of their malicious review because we didn't give them what they wanted - and that, sadly, was 'something for nothing'!
We believe that our other reviews will put this particular one into perspective. Trip Advisor readers will see through this rubbish and we know for a fact that our 'normal' reviews will show this one up and discredit it as corrupt and infactual.

"Excellent location, cottage had everything you needed, warm & cosy"
The only downside to the cottage was trying to find it! none of the locals knew of its location either but once we found it with much appreciated help from the owners, we found the cottage to be quaint but offering all the mod cons, we wanted for nothing - other than a corkscrew to open the wine! Nice and cosy retreat after a day out in the cold, would definately stay here again.
Thank you Jo for your kind review of Awd Tuts Cottage. Obviously corkscrew now on our 'to buy' list. There used to be two corkscrews in the kitchen as we always try to ensure that we provide guests with everything they should require and have to admit, we hate falling short of that expectation!
Just a mention here too for 'potential future guests'.
We do send out an email to all guests arriving at any of our cottages with 'step by step' instructions to find the cottages. We always advise guests to print these off and bring them along to make life easier as there's nothing more frustrating than being unable to find somewhere.
