Northern England region

The North York Moors National Park is a beautiful landscape of stunning moorland, spectacular coast, ancient woodland and historic sites. It's a great place whatever time of year.

Nearby Whitby's skyline is dominated by the ruins of St. Hilda's Abbey, high on Whitby's East Cliff. Spreading below Whitby, a maze of alleyways and narrow streets run down to the busy quayside.

From the old town of Whitby, 199 steps lead up to the parish church of St. Mary, whose churchyard on Whitby's East Cliff gave Bram Stoker the inspiration to write his world famous book, Dracula

Whitby is situated on the Yorkshire Coast. To the south lies the coastal villages and resorts of Ravenscar, Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington. All these are well within a short drive from Whitby.

Whitby

Situated in the heart of the Esk Valley, Grosmont is a picturesque village set amid woodlands and traditional farmlands. The village owes its size to the discovery of ironstone in 1836 when the railway from Whitby to Pickering was being built. The Murk Esk flows into the Esk here at a beautiful bend in the river.

Grosmont has a steam railway which has been preserved and run by enthusiasts since 1973. There is probably no better way of enjoying this part of the National Park than through the train windows as it winds its way for 18 miles through the spectacular scenery of Newtondale Gorge to Grosmont. There are stations at Goathland, Newtondale and Levisham. Goathland. The station has an adjoining platform for the Esk Valley Railway which runs from Middlesbrough to Whitby, making Grosmont easily accessible by train.
