Northern England region

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

Perhaps the best known of the villages near to Whitby is Robin Hood's Bay. Situated at the bottom of a very steep hill and surrounded by vertical cliffs, it is one of the most charismatic and remote settlements on the Yorkshire coast and has a fascinating and colourful past. Originally an isolated fishing village, Robin Hood's Bay became infamous as the most active smuggling centre on the North Yorkshire coast. At low tide, 1800 feet of exposed sea-floor makes for great fossil hunting, rock-pooling and exploring. You can walk to nearby Ravenscar at low tide when the three miles of beach are exposed. Nearby attractions include Whitby, with its ancient Abbey and evening ‘ghost walks’, Scarborough with all the fun of a seaside town and the city of York, which has a huge range of attractions for visitors of all ages.
