The Northern England / Yorkshire/Yorkshire Dales region
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline. A haven for walkers, the area also boasts great cycling, gliding, riding and fishing, whilst North York Moors Railway is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful scenery in a more relaxed setting.
Visit the market towns of Pickering or Thirsk; the latter famous for its links with the English country vet and author, James Herriot. Nearby, some of Yorkshire’s best-loved villages including Thornton-le-Dale and Rosedale Abbey offer a taste of village life, as does Goathland, ‘Aidensfield’ in the TV series ‘Heartbeat’. Finally, stop off at Castle Howard and Duncombe Park, two of Britain’s most historic stately homes situated in breathtaking parklands and gardens.
The cliffs, sandy beaches and smugglers’ caves of the Yorkshire coastline are a haven for beachcombers and coastal walkers. Discover the quaint fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes, with their brightly coloured fishing boats. Finally, there’s the historic city of York, with its interactive Viking Centre, Roman walls, medieval streets, vibrant shops and gothic York Minster cathedral.
The Whitby / Sleights area
The charming village of Sleights is perfect for both coastal holidays and countryside sojourns. It is on the edge of dramatic moors and close to the beautiful Yorkshire coastline. Sleights has two public houses, a fish and chip shop, post office, butchers, bakery and an antique shop with a café. The terminus of The North Yorkshire Steam Railway is a few minutes drive from Sleights and there is regular public transport to nearby Whitby. The town of Whitby has a fascinating history, with its spectacular Abbey and the famous 199 steps that lead up to it. The sandy beaches are safe and the harbour is always worth visiting. Sleights offers the holiday maker a wonderful base to get to know this area and take advantage of the many attractions it offers.

Guestbook for 1414 - The Piggery
The location of the house, the comfortable surroundings, the views from the cottage and the ease in which we made ourselves at home. Thoughtful gestures like tea, coffee, wine, and providing washing up liquid etc. all these little things make a big difference. We had a lovely holiday with our grown up family and hopefully we will return.

,The situation of the cottage could not be beaten, the views were tremendous from the balcony and the steam trains passing were an added bonus. We would certainly have no hesitation in returning to The Piggery or recommending it.

,Superb views from kitchen balcony. The layout, decor and furnishings of the cottage are superb. Well worth a visit - we will certainly be going back!

,The Piggery is an extremely comfortable house. The accommodation is of a very high standard. We enjoyed the beautiful views from the balcony and looked forward to the regular passage of the steam train. It is a great centre for a holiday and we particularly enjoyed the fish and chips from Eskdale Fisheries!
