The West Country region
Thomas Hardy's 'Isle of Slingers', juts out like a bird's beak into the English Channel. Most visitors only know Portland for its famous stone or the lighthouse but there's a lot more to discover, from walks along the cliffs to exploring its varied history. Be sure to put it on your list of places to visit whilst on holiday. The Isle of Portland is not really an island, though it is only joined to the mainland by a narrow strip of land and the Chesil Beach. The mass of land that juts out into the channel is formed from a block of limestone 4 1/2 miles long by 3/4 of a mile wide and rises from near sea level in the south to over 400 ft high in the north
Portland is the venue for the Olympic sailing in 2012 ideal spot for competitors or spectators or just a relaxing break.
The Classic Seaside Resort of Weymouth, with its fantastic beach and vibrant harbour, nestles perfectly alongside the rugged 'Isle' of Portland, the perfect place for visitors who just want to get away from it all. With plenty of places to eat and drink, and all year round events, attractions and activities there's something for everyone, isn't it time you discovered Weymouth and Portland?

"A lovely place, but not..."
It is a lovely house and area. We travelled with out 18 month (walking) and 8 year old kids. The steep stairs was very dangerous and narrow even the portable stairgate could not fit. I would not recommend this for people with very young children.
