The West Country region

Weymouth is the ideal location from which to explore the more remote parts of the Dorset countryside and coastline now designated a Natural World Heritage Site.

East of Weymouth lie the coastal attractions of Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove and the Isle Purbeck. The Tank Museum, Lulworth Castle and Corfe castle all provide great historical interest from different eras, as well as special event days including displays, jousting and open air concerts.

Westward the spectacular Jurassic coastline extends to Lyme Regis and the Devon border, a must for fossil hunters and geologists of any age or experience . However the first stop must be the pretty village of Abbotsbury with its many attractions not least among them the splendid sub tropical gardens, renowned for their exotic plants which thrive in the mild winters and warm summers of this micro climate.

The isle of Porland with its weather hewn dramatic cliffs, extending 4 mls south into The English Channel contrasts with a history based on a Naval and industrial pedigree. Limestone quarrying has dominated the past, but now the National Sailing Academy provides a leisure opportunity for all to participate in water sports within the safe confines of Portland Harbour. Church Ope Cove , the Lighthouse, Pulpit Rock and the Museum are all places well worthy of visits while on the island.

The Roman County town of Dorchester is protected by the ancient Maiden Castle hill fort some 8 mls north, inland from Weymouth. In more recent times it has provided the central location for Thomas Hardy novels and the slightly controversial location for Prince Charles' vision of a new town at Poundbury, while Kingston Maurward house and animal park provide more mainstream style attractions.

Weymouth

Weymouth retains its charm as a traditional seaside town. The beach has Punch and Judy, sand modeller, trampoline, donkey rides, pedalos and floats. Beach kiosks, tea shops and deckchair/ lounger hire provide all your needs for a day by the sea. The seafront land train takes you from the Kings Statue to Lodmoor Counrtry Park to visit The Sealife Centre, Pirate Adventure, Mini Golf, Leisure Ranch and other attractions. The town provides various shops, bowling, cinema and restaurants. The Pavillion Theatre has a varied programme of evening shows and various pubs and clubs provide lively evening entertainment

The Harbour, quite possibly the most attractive and varied on the south coast, has many restaurants and pubs around it's perimeter. There are a wide variety of boats from working fishing vessel to visiting tall ships. Take a ride in the cross Harbour ferry to the Nothe Gardens and visit the Napoleonic Nothe Fort.

Events and Festivals take place thoughout the year including Easter Fun, Vintage Motorcycle / Car Rallies, Harbourside Music Festival, Sailing events, Spirit of the Sea, Olympic Torch Relay, Weymouth Carnival, Beach Motocross and New Year's Eve Fancy Dress Revelry.
