The West Country / Dorset region
Weymouth dates back to pre-Roman times when it was two small hamlets either side of the river Wey. In Roman times it was a major port supplying the garrison in Dorchester. Sections of the road still exist. During the Middle ages Weymouth and Portland were favourite smugglers haunts. During the Napoleonic wars it was a major port, in fact French prisoners of war built the Portland Harbour walls and were housed in the Nothe Fort. A cnon ball enbeded in a house wall is still visible today.
During WW11 it served as the major embarkation port for US troops heading to the Normandy Beaches. Stonehenge and Cheddar Gorge are within a 2hr drive. Weymouth is at the centre of the Jurassic coast. It is rated number 3 in the UK for the number of hours of sunshine
The Weymouth / Preston, Dorset area
For the energetic, Weymouth serves as an ideal centre for Walking or Rambling/ holidays. Westward the coastal path goes to Lyme Regis and on into Devon: Eastwards to Lulworth Cove, Purbeck, and Poole: Southwards is a trail around Portland; Northwards Shaftesbury. These walks may be done individually or as part of an organized group visiting a different area each day. Many refreshment hostelries can be found on these trails. The town and surrounding area offers many attractions for all ages, from Fossil hunting at Lyme Regis to Clay pigeon shooting just north of Dorchester which itself has 3 museums including one for Tutenkamun. Monkey wWorld and Bovington Tank Museum.

The house was very comfortable, clean, warm and had everything we needed to have a great family Easter break. The view from the decked terrace of the coast line is excellent. A short easy walk,... more Response: Pleased to note the family round everything to their satisfaction. We try to go the extra mile to ensure visitors have a good break |

The house is in a lovely location, close to a playground and beautiful beaches. We found so much for the kids to do in and around Weymouth and had a really great holiday. The house was well equipped for us and the children, including a lovely modern kitchen and stair gates for the baby. The only issue for us was a strong smell, cigarette smoke, which badly affected my husband's asthma. We particularly noticed it on our return home and opening our suitcases, when we had to re-wash all of our clothes. Response: The house is supposed to be non smoking. Cleaners have not found any cigarette butts when cleaning house. Curreny renter is an asthmatic and has not detected any smell nor had a reaction. |

The house was very homely and clean. The house had everything we needed and the kitchen had everything to enable meals at home. Great location with a five minute walk to the beach through the nature reserve. Response: We always make the extra effort to ensure the home provides a base for a happy holiday |
