The West Country / Dorset region

Weymouth is a diverse and popular resort set in the heart of the UNESCO Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. It’s bounded by Lyme Bay and Chesil Beach to the west and Weymouth Bay to the south and stretching to the Purbecks to the east.
Weymouth is a major seaside resort, with its long arc of golden sands. King George III spent his summers in the town, and the curves of the Georgian Esplanade looks out over Weymouth Bay and its safe, clean sandy beach. Weymouth has beautiful fishing harbour with ferry connections to the Channel Islands and France.
The area is one of the sunniest places in Britain.
The Weymouth / Upwey area
The beach - Punch and Judy, Children's Snail Rollercoaster, Bungee Trampoline, Donkey rides and Sand Modeller. As well as chalets, deckchairs and sun-lounger, pedaloes and floats.
Land train -the seafront land train is suitable for all the family and includes facilities for pushchairs and wheelchairs.
The harbour - One of the most picturesque harbours in Europe, Weymouth’s 17th Century Waterfront is home to some of Dorset’s finest pubs, restaurants, family attractions and architecture.
Northe Fort - Barrack Road
Brewers Quay - shopping and leisure complex with crafts, ten-pin bowling, science centre and small brewery, as well as The Weymouth Museum and Timewalk showing the history of the area, in the old Devenish Brewery
Deep Sea Adventure - underwater exploration, shipwrecks, large play area, shop etc,
Sea Life Park - marine displays, pools, games and quizzes, play area, shop, etc,
Chesil Beach- drive to East Fleet with its ruined church. The beach is 18 miles long from Portland to West Bay, and with its 180 billion pebbles, it is separated the mainland for the most part by a brackish lagoon - The Fleet. Made famous by many pirate tales.
Jordon Hill Roman Temple- just around the coast from Weymouth on the A353 at Overcombe.
Birdwatching - The RSPB Reserves at Radipole and Lodmoor are situated close to the town centre and are excellent for birdwatchers and those who interested in being close to nature.
White Horse- a picture of George III etched into the hillside.
Portland - Portland Bill lighthouse, on the tip of Portland has some excellent walks and dramatic scenery, and a popular cafe - The Lobster Pot
Sharky's - soft play zone for the children - 9 Custom House Quay, Old Harbour, Weymouth, Dorset, DT4 8BG

We stayed here with our 2 and 4 year olds in order to catch up with friends for the weekend and really just needed a base in Upwey. However, we think this cottage is a real gem. Clean and warm and cosy with comfortable beds and lots of nice touches. The open plan kitchen / living area worked well and the flat screen / dvd player was great for the odd kids movie. There was a really good collection of books and games for adults and kiddies which was a bonus. It was pristine, but in a welcoming homely way. We walked to Upwey station and got the train to weymouth and also walked to the Old Ship Inn where we were able to get a table for 4 kids and 4 adults in its own area, thus not feeling bad if the kids made a squeak or two. We highly recommend. |

Upwey Cottage is a great little getaway, easy to travel to but tucked away down a very quiet unmade cul de sac. The owners have furnished it well and it has everything you might need including a box full of toys for young children, a well stocked bookshelf and a good wifi connection. The location is excellent, it's a short walk or drive to practically everything you could think of - paper shop, chippy, supermarket etc. There is a lovely view across the fields from the kitchen window. |

This is the second time that I have visited this gorgeous cottage. It is compact but has everything you could need for a short break. The garden is sweet and my children aged 11 and 6, love the cottage and found plenty to do in the area and have already requested to go again. Even washing up is a pleasure here - when you look out the window at the calm, rural view. Thoroughly recommend it. |
