The West Country region
The magnificent Dorset coastline, together with the outstanding natural beauty of the unspoilt countryside, makes this county a very special place to come and explore.
Discover the breathtaking Jurassic Coast, England's first natural World Heritage Site, stretching for 95 miles from neighbouring East Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset. The stunning coastline is world famous for fossil hunting. There are wonderful views for walkers on the South West Coast Path National Trail, or you can simply enjoy the spectacular scenery on a gentle coastal cruise.
Away from the coast there are miles of rolling countryside sprinkled with charming villages and fascinating market towns. Almost all of Dorset's countryside is protected and is home to a huge diversity of wildlife in downlands, tranquil river valleys, water meadows, woodlands and colourful heathlands.
Above all, this is Thomas Hardy country - ancient Wessex, home of the Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the D'urbervilles and Jude the Obscure. You will find many other famous literary associations across the area including Jane Austen, John Fowles, TE Lawrence and Enid Blyton.
The area has captivated film and TV makers from all over the world. Productions of all kinds have been filmed on location here, with Dorset's unspoilt countryside, dramatic coastline and spectacular historic houses and gardens being used as a backdrop to the action.
Dorset is home to some of the finest, most delicious, first-class food you'll ever taste! With its reputation for freshly caught fish, organic blue cheeses, specialist breads, local ales, award-winning handmade chocolates and the sheer luxury of local, premium ice cream – you are never far away from exceptionally good food in Dorset.
The Classic Seaside Resort of Weymouth, with its fantastic beach and vibrant harbour, nestles perfectly alongside the rugged 'Isle' of Portland, the perfect place for visitors who just want to get away from it all. With plenty of places to eat and drink, and all year round events, attractions and activities there's something for everyone.
Weymouth was the home to the 2012 Olympic Sailing events, and the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy was opened by the Queen. There is a large sailing marina within a short distance of the house.
Weymouth is a regional shopping centre and has a full range of national and local specialist shops. Other facilities close to the house include a multiplex cinema, internet cafe, plus many pubs and clubs.
