The North West Ireland / County Mayo region

This beautiful unspoilt part of Connemara is the ideal getaway location for those who want to unwind and forget about it all for a while. After staying here you will not want to go back to the city. For those of you who like driving we are in the heart of the most beautiful scenery in the world. This area is truly unique as it is the only place in Europe that a blanket bog (peat) exists. The Irish hare ,red grouse, butterflies, dragonflies, spiders live in these blanket bogs which are 10,000 years old. It is also used as a form of heat , after it is cut and dried. It has an unusual relaxing smell when burning.
This part of Mayo is surrounded by mountains, lakes and ocean. It caterers for all kinds of activities. So if you want to relax and read a good book or go bungie jumping its all here at our doorstep

Westport / Erriff area

The Erriff river is only 100m away from the lodge and is renowned for salmon fishing . The bustling town of Westport is just 15km away and is one of the best towns in Ireland for entertainment, good food, leisure facilities and home to Matt Molloy's pub of the Chieftains. There is an annual music festival held in August and an arts festival in October. In the other direction there is the quaint village of Leenane renowned for the making of the film 'The Field'. It is located on the Killary Fjord the only Fjord in western Europe. Leenane has good pubs and restaurants. An annual curragh race takes place every July weather permiting. The medieval village of Aughagower is only 8km away and is where St Patrick passed through on his way to Croagh Patrick. It has a tenth century round tower and an old graveyard and is a great place to start looking for long lost relatives from this area. Ballintuber Abbey is where the St Patrick walk starts and is 30min away.Sea angling can also be arranged please enquire with owner. There are two adventure centres 8 miles away catering for all who want to use up some energy. Local attractions are salmon fishing on the Erriff River (August was the best month in 2008),hillwalking, road and mountainbiking, birdlife and plants . Set amonst surrounding mountains , sheep and cattle graze nearby .Croagh Patrick Ireland's holy mountain is only a stones throw away and there is a local pub just 800metres away. The mountain range in this area is truly remarkable and majestic as the colours change from hour to hour with the different light. There is a famine monument twenty minutes away in memory of those who died on their way to Delphi looking for food in 1847. Nearer at hand is a monument for one of the last ambushes by the IRA against the Black and Tans during the Irish War of Independance in 1921
