The North West Ireland / County Mayo region
Co. Mayo has miles of spectacular coast line to explore as well as mountains to climb, such as Croagh Patrick or Nephin Beg. Take a boat trip to Clare Island or drive to Achill Island. From the tranquility of Cong Abbey and Lough Corrib in the south, via the Logh Mask drive to the spectacular setting of the historical Ceidh Fields in the North, Mayo has much variety to offer. There are plenty of megalithm tombs, round towers and crannogs to explore, including Granuaille's Castle. There are plenty of golf courses and opportunities for sailing, horseriding, fishing and walking. The Westport area is also a central location for exporing a little farther, for instance to Connemara in the south or the beaches of Inniscrone and Easky in Sligo to the north.
Westport / Rosmoney area
Westport is a unique town because of its layout and location. It was planned and designed by the renowned architect James Wyatt. Situated near Croagh Patrick, Ireland's most famous mountain and on the shores of Clew Bay, its old world harbour was once a thriving port serving the County of Mayo. Westport is very different in design from any other Irish town. A visit to Westport will confirm its uniqueness. Westport is hosting the 2007 Fleadh Cheoil Mhaigheo from May 11th - 14th 2007. The festival is a series of organised events of Irish music, song, dance and competitions inspiring younger generations to continue the tradition of our proud heritage. Within short drives from Westport are the most beautiful, biggest and safest beaches in Europe. They will be found by driving West towards and beyond Louisburgh. Most beaches are signposted and very uncrowded. Mayo has a large number of Blue Flag Beaches. Westport is a centre of the famous Glenans Sailing Centres providing residential sailing courses, including sail board training. Rosmoney, Westport is the base for Mayo Sailing Club. A picturesque cruising ground exists among the archipelago of islands in the east of Clew Bay. There are slipways at Rosmoney, Westport Quay and Old Head suitable for launching dinghies and trailer-sailers. Westport and Westport Quay have a wide range of excellent restaurants catering for all tastes and prices. Even for the non-drinker a visit to the friendly Westport pubs is a must. The music and atmosphere is great and many pubs serve bar food. For more information visit www.westporttourism.com.
