About this location
The East Anglia region
Although only a couple of hours drive from London, the Suffolk coast is a quiet and unspoilt region that has so much to offer to visitors.
Located on the East Anglian coast, the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty consists of ancient heathland, wetlands, beautiful shingle & sandy beaches as well as charming market towns and pretty villages. This tranquil and unspoilt landscape is a haven for a wide variety of animals and birds, and a fantastic place to explore and discover. The landscape and the huge skies have inspired artists and visitors for centuries. A wealth of footpaths and cycle routes make it a delightful area to explore. It is perfect for anyone who enjoys wildlife, nature and the great outdoors.
The cottage is located in the quiet village of Eastbridge, which is about midway between Southwold and Aldeburgh. The centre of the village is the Eel's Foot pub, which offers fantastic local beers and excellent pub food.
The famous RSPB bird reserve at Minsmere is within walking distance of the cottage. Rare birds, such as barn owls, marsh harriers, avocets, bitterns and nightjars can be seen at the reserve and elsewhere in the area and frequently from the garden of the cottage.
There is a lot to do in local area throughout the year. The coast offers beautiful beaches at Dunwich, Thorpeness, Aldeburgh, Southwold and Walberswick. The nearby village of Dunwich was once one of the largest ports in England, but most of the old city now lies under the sea. The interesting museum explains the history of the vlllage. Walberswick, with its beautiful beach and sand dunes, is famous for crabbing - including the annual British Crabbing Championship. From Walberswick, you can walk or take the rowing boat ferry across the river Blyth to Southwold, an unspoilt seaside town with charming shops and cafes. The restored pier with its wacky slot machines is worth a visit. Heading south down the coast, Thorpeness is home to the well-known House in the Clouds, a restored post mill and The Meare, a shallow 65 acre boating lake. Aldburgh is a an elegant seaside town and is renowned for some of the best fish and chips in the country. As well as hosting concerts and music festivals, notably the annual Aldeburgh festival, Snape Malting offers shops, restaurants and beautiful views walks along the river Alde.
