The Austrian Alps / Salzburgerland / Tyrol/Tirol region
A very pretty area with picturesque alpine villages, Imperial, cultural towns with mediaeval history, traditional folklore and music there is something for everyone. Innsbruck is the historic capital of the Tyrol with the famous Golden Roof, Imperial Palace, Cathedral and museums.
Salzburg the birthplace of Mozart has an impressive fortress, Cathedral and Residenz Palace from the Baroque, Rococo and Neo-Classical periods. Art Galleries and museums are plentiful. The Krimml Waterfalls, the highest in Austria and the Grossglockner, a glacier are excellent day trips.
Berchtesgaden in Bavaria famous for Hitler's Eagles Nest or the salt mines there are less than 2 hours away. A steam train ride to Lake Achensee and a boat trip makes a delightful day out. all these outings can be booked by the Westendorf Tourist Office or can be reached by car.
Westendorf area
A traditional Austrian village with a strong farming community. The village is situated well off the main road to Kitzbuhel and Worgl. A Farmer's Market is held weekly in the summer. The excellent Tourist Office organises walks (for various capabilities), aqua gymnastics in the local swimming pool, concerts, visits to the local distillery, cycle tours, and Nordic walking. Coach tours can be organised for visits further.
Children are well catered for too with a trampoline area, mini golf, tennis, horse riding and events organised by the tourist office. The Alpinolino nature trail from the top of the mountain down is a wonderful way to introduce children to hiking and learning about nature as they go. Salvena Land in the next village is an adventure play ground.
Trout fishing in 2 nearby lakes and barbecuing the catch on site is fun for children and adults! Bikes for Mountain biking or cycles can be hired locally. Westendorf has the best Para-gliding School in the area. Rafting can be organised locally too. There is a very comprehensive file in the Barn with more ideas to do!
