The New England / Massachusetts region
Cape Cod is an arm-shaped peninsula forming the easternmost portion of the state of Massachusetts. Although Cape Cod was originally connected to the mainland, the first Cape Cod Canal, completed in 1914, effectively transformed Cape Cod into a large island.
The Pilgrims were the first “tourists” to visit Cape Cod, landing in Provincetown and later coming ashore at Eastham’s First Encounter Beach, named for their first encounter with the Nauset Indians. Today’s Cape Cod lures holiday makers seeking the finest in sandy beaches, quaint villages, great shopping, the freshest of seafood, and plenty of activities to round out your vacation.
If the beach is “your thing,” Cape Cod is the place for you. This 65-mile long peninsula borders the Atlantic Ocean, Nantucket Sound and Cape Cod Bay, and also offers many salt water bays and freshwater ponds and lakes, providing a variety of waters for your enjoyment.
If your group includes teens or sports enthusiasts, you may want to hit the beaches of the Cape Cod National Seashore. It’s located along the Cape’s Atlantic coast and is where you’ll find the “surf’s up.” Try surf boarding or boogie boarding – or just relax and watch the tide roll in!
The shore along Cape Cod Bay is for the little ones and those who enjoy a nice stroll to look for shells or sea creatures. While there is little in the way of surf, the waters are pleasantly warm, and low tide makes for good opportunities to explore the bottom of the bay. Nantucket Sound borders the southern shore of Cape Cod and also surrounds the island of Martha’s Vineyard and part of Nantucket island. You’ll find the Sound’s waters warmer than the Atlantic’s and the Bay’s, with a little more surf than the Bay.
The Cape and Islands also offer abundant fishing and shellfishing, and wooded areas in which to observe and enjoy nature. Boating is a popular activity, whether you prefer power or sail. The Cape Cod Rail Trail is enjoyed by bikers and walkers alike. You’ll find that the main streets of the towns on the Cape and Islands are lined with quaint shops and waterfront restaurants along with a wonderful representation of the arts, from paintings by renowned artists to performing arts featuring some of entertainment’s biggest names. No wonder Cape Cod is such a popular vacation destination!
Although, as in the days of the earliest settlers, Cape Cod can still be reached by boat (from Boston or Plymouth), by far the most popular mode of transportation to Cape Cod is the car. Traffic onto the Cape crosses over the Cape Cod Canal by either the Bourne Bridge or the Sagamore Bridge.
West Yarmouth area
Incorporated in 1637, Yarmouth is one of the oldest towns on Cape Cod. Geographically, the town encompasses both the north and south side of the Cape, each area having its own flavor. Yarmouth has 15 fresh and saltwater beaches on Nantucket Sound. Seagull Beach is the town’s largest, and the Bass River area has some fine beaches.
On the shores of Cape Cod Bay, Yarmouthport has retained the charm of an early New England coastal community. Lovely sea captains’ homes line historic and tree-lined Route 6A, along with antique shops and fine restaurants.
Walk the 2 ½ mile nature trail through the Callery-Darling Conservation Area, which leads to Gray’s Beach. From here you can stroll along the Bass Hole Boardwalk, which stretches over a creek and salt marshes and through nature trails.
On the south side, South Yarmouth offers shopping, family fun and entertainment, and many family-type restaurants. The Bass River, the largest tidal river on the eastern seaboard, divides Yarmouth and Dennis; in fact, some people refer to this area as Bass River. Here you can charter boats or explore the river in a rented kayak or canoe.
Bustling West Yarmouth, with its abundant vacation homes and cottage colonies, offers something for the whole family. The ZooQuarium delights children with its sea lions, petting zoo, and pony rides. And West Yarmouth is home to the lovely walking trail, the Yarmouth Boardwalk, which extends through the marsh and to Swan Pond and its surrounding woods.
Free summer concerts are held on Monday nights at the outdoor bandshell at the Mattacheese Middle School, and the Yarmouth Seaside Festival is an annual event held in October.

'We loved the house!!! It was really perfect. I wanted to let you know that the two twin beds as a king worked great and the memory foam made it VERY comfortable!!! The sheets were also AMAZING!!! The house was great with everything we needed to enjoy our stay! We also loved being so close to everything! It was great being able to walk downtown.''
'We have had the most fantastic week. Your house is absolutely perfect, a real home from home - we could not have hoped for more! The situation in Hyannis was great, very peaceful but yet within easy walking distance of the beach and restaurants. We loved the convenience of the beach at the end of the road and it was great to sit and watch all the boat tours going past.''
'Thank you for providing such a pleasant atmosphere for our vacation on the Cape. It can sometimes be a little scary when renting something without seeing it first. We were not disappointed. Your thoughtfulness was much appreciated and your home so warm and welcoming. Our every need was met and we enjoyed our short walks to the beach and trips around the area''
''Thank you very much for your little touches which make American hospitality so wonderful! We had a competition to see if there was anything you hadn't provided and we couldn't find a thing! Your house is wonderfully welcoming. Everything was so well thought out and we really appreciated the wine and choccies! We had a wonderful holiday here. The accommodation is spotless and very homely. The house is very well equipped. Every effort was taken to ensure that we enjoyed our stay. The beach is walking distance and very safe for children. This was a great base to explore from. We reccommend the bike hire at Martha's Vineyard!”
