About this location
The Shropshire region
North Shropshire has much to offer visitors to the area. Canals link the market towns of Market Drayton in the North East to Oswestry in North West and in between are other pretty towns; Wem, Whitchurch and Ellesmere. Near to Piggery cottage are the important Meres and Mosses wetlands; habitats for some of the rarest wildlife in the UK and Hawkstone Park Follies, a fantasyland of cliffs, crags, caves, deep woods and monuments built more than 250 years ago. The cottage is also well placed for trips beyond North Shropshire to the historic cities of Shrewsbury (14 miles), Chester (26 miles) and Ludlow (44 miles) and the picturesque South Shropshire hills around Church Stretton (28 miles). North Wales is also on the doorstep.
Piggery cottage is 3 miles north of Wem and 6 miles south of Whitchurch in the beautiful unspoilt North Shropshire countryside. Although situated in a peaceful, unspoilt area, Piggery Cottage is close to local amenities. Wem has a small selection of local shops, a Co-op supermarket, post office, two chemists, two butchers, newsagents, deli, hardware shop, florist and old fashioned sweetshop. Whitchurch has a bigger selection of larger shops with both Tescos and Sainsburys, a Lidl and Iceland, as well a range of smaller shops. Nearby there are farm shops selling local produce and there is a good selection or country pubs serving real ale and good food.
