Home description
Original exposed beams feature in every room. There is parking space for two/three cars and a large garden with views over the countryside. Mainly laid to lawn, the garden has a few pretty beds of roses, lavenders and herbs, apple trees and a patio area with hardwood furniture.
The sitting room has underfloor heating as well as the log-burning stove in the huge inglenook. The walls are hung with engravings by Norwich School artists John Sell Cotman and his son Miles Edmund Cotman, after whom the cottage is named. A well-stocked bookcase and collection of games is supplemented by TV, video, CD player and radio.
In the kitchen, a ceramic hob and electric oven have been built into the old fireplace with cupboards full of Spode blue and white china on either side. A Belfast sink and dishwasher have been set under granite worktops.
Both the bedrooms (one king-size bed, one twin beds) have dormer windows facing south over the garden and are decorated in Fired Earth paints. All bed linen and towels are supplied including anti-allergy pillow and mattress protectors.
The small bathroom under the eaves accommodates a bath with hand-held shower mixer tap, basin and lavatory but the view from the window makes up for lack of space.

The East Anglia / Norfolk region
East Anglia comprises Norfolk and Suffolk, the broadlands of which are now known as the Norfolk Broads. The land here is mostly flat but offers much walking. Also very fertile, farming and horticulture have dominated industry in the region with many technological influences from Dutch neighbours across the Channel.
A beautiful part of England to explore.
Wells-next-the-Sea area
Wells-next-the-Sea was in Tudor times much closer than its present mile from the sea and a great port. Still a commercially viable port it has many cute, narrow lanes and interesting streets to wander through.
The town divides into three distinct areas, starting with the broad rectangular green to the north, lined with lime trees and some very fine Georgian houses, known as The Buttlands since the days when it was used for archery practice. South from here are the narrow lanes of the town centre - Staithe Street, the main commercial street, has some interesting shops for browsing. At the bottom end of Staithe Street stands the quay, a rash of amusement arcades and the road to the local beach, which is shadowed by a high bank erected to consolidate the narrow channel to the sea.
The name of Wells derives from the old word 'welles' meaning a clear spring of which Wells used to have many, rising through the sand and wells in the area. The addition of 'next-the-Sea' was to distinguish the town from other places in Norfolk of the same name. It was known as Wells-next-the-Sea in the early 1800's but with the coming of the railway in 1857 the name 'Wells-on-Sea' seems to have been used. The town council made the decision in 1956 that the name 'Wells-next-the-Sea' be adopted.
The large granary, a major feature down at the harbour, with loading gantry was built around 1903-1906.
