Watford area
Watford is Hertfordshire's largest town and is situated in the south of the county between the M25 and M1 motorways. Watford is only a 20 minutes train journey from Euston station in London. The navigable River Gade runs along the west of Watford while the River Colne runs along the east.
Today Watford is a busy, prosperous town with excellent, modern shopping, a large amount of industry and business, along with large residential areas.
Shopping is dominated by the Harlequin Centre in the heart of the town. This indoor shopping centre has 146 stores and is anchored by major names including John Lewis, Marks and Spencer and Bhs. In Charter Place, adjacent to the Harlequin Centre, is Watford Market which is open on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
For evening entertainment, The Parade near the town centre draws people to its restaurants, pubs, nightclubs and also a Jongleurs Comedy Club. Nearby there are a number of theatres including The Palace Theatre and The Colosseum which put on a variety of productions, shows and entertainment. A few miles north of the town centre is Woodside Leisure Park which includes a multi-screen cinema, ten-pin bowling centre and restaurants.
The history of the town can be discovered at Watford Museum in the former head office of local brewery, Benskin's. For recreation, Cassiobury Park in the West of Watford provides enjoyable walks and also has a golf course. The Earl of Essex once had a large house in the park.
Vicarage Road in Watford, is home to the largest sports stadium in Hertfordshire. Watford Football Club is based here, along with Saracens Rugby Club.
