The County Kerry region
Spectacular lakes, mile after mile of coastline, green and yellow chequered hills, breathtaking cliffs, sub-tropical flowers and plants. And last, but not least, some of the warmest most charming people anywhere.
This is a place of marked contrasts – a dramatic coastline, rolling countryside and Ireland’s highest mountain. Kerry offers a glimpse of the real Ireland, a history lesson unfolding before your eyes.
The literature marries ancient myths and legends, lyricism and a deep knowledge of the region’s most important history. It has been an inspiration to writers, artists and musicians for centuries and it is easy why people wax lyrical about this paradise on earth.
Kerry is renowned for its rugged peninsulas, picturesque bays and profusion of subtropical vegetation along its coastline. Whatever your interest, Kerry will surprise you and entertain you with the very best of everything. From shopping and restaurants to the great outdoors, Kerry has the best of everything.
Discover the dramatic abbeys of Muckross, Inisfallen and Ardfert. Explore the romantic castles of Ross, Ballycarberry, Listowel and Carrigafoyle. Visit palatial houses and gardens such as Muckross House, Derrynane House and Glenleam House. Kerry has the largest density of archaeological sites, from the Skelligs Unesco World Heritage site and Staigue Forts of Cahergal and Castlecove on the Ring of Kerry, to Rattoo Round Tower, Gallarus and the heritage towns of Kenmare and Listowel.
Every day you’ll discover more opportunities to enjoy the space, beauty and tranquillity of this very special part of Ireland’s spectacular southwest.
It is easy to understand why Kerry is referred to as the Kingdom, as it is believed to be the closest thing to heaven on hearth.
Waterville / Lohar area
Fuchsia Lodge is situated on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, overlooking Ballinskelligs Bay and surrounded by the McGillicuddy Reeks –Ireland’s highest mountain range. It is the ideal location to explore a wide and varied range of outdoor activities, including walking, surfing, golfing and angling. The southwest of Ireland is home to some of the world's most renowned and prestigious golf courses - names like Waterville, Ballybunion, Tralee and Killarney are all ranked in the top courses in the world and are all within easy reach of Fuchsia Lodge.
The area is also renowned for its diverse range of water based activities - enjoy a day kayaking with the chance to see dolphins or seals or explore the underwater gardens of the southwest, which offers some of the best and most renowned diving sites in Europe. Waterville Golf Links Links land is a geological rarity. Less than one percent of all the courses in Ireland and the British Isles are championship links. Waterville is one of these. It is no wonder that the world’s best players test their mettle here. Golf at Waterville is a mystical experience – the beauty of classic links land, surrounded by the sea, yet forever challenged and shaped by the elements. Over 100 years old, Waterville is rated among the top 5 courses in Ireland and the top 20 links courses in the world. Links golf combines sand dunes gorse and native grasses, firm fairways, sod faced bunkers and subtle putting surfaces all intertwined by the ever changing weather. Forget the lob wedge. Think bump and run and creative shot making. Are you ready to walk in the footsteps of Irelands earliest golfers? www.watervillegolflinks.ie
Skellig Bay Golf Course Situated overlooking the magistic Ballinskelligs Bay and set among natural magalithic stonework and indigenous bog deal, there can be few more visually stunning locations for a golf couse than Skellig Bay in Waterville. The course opened for play in Spring 2006 and has already been rated in Irelands “Top 50”. Nestling in the shadows of the towering McGillicuddy Reeks, the golfer has to negotiate the river Fionnglass for the opening and closing holes but it is the stretch from six to sixteen that lives in memory long after the last putt has been sunk. Here the awesome beauty of the Bay hits you full in the face as you play through holes framed by over 8000 yards of ancient “famine” walls. Original standing stones from pre-christian times and a fairy fort all add to an unforgettable round as you experience an unbelievable feeling of another time and place.“Skellig Bay is full of challenging golf holes” says Sunday Independent Golf Correspondent Dermot Gilleece. www.skelligbay.com
The Skellig Experience In THE SKELLIG EXPERIENCE CENTRE you can experience many aspects of those offshore Skellig islands while remaining on the dry land, in a custom built, stone clad, grass roofed, prize winning building located right on the waterfront beside the Valentia Island bridge at Valentia, County Kerry! Here, through re-creations and models you can study the works and lives of the Skellig monks of the early Christian period, their activities, their endurance and their dedication in gaining a foothold on a tiny, inhospitable, offshore island and creating a community there that survived for some 600 years. In The Skellig Experience’s 80-seat auditorium, a 16-minute audio-visual presentation will take you in the footsteps of those Skellig monks, and wonder at the legacy of architecture that they left behind. In The Skellig Experience’s re-created Skellig sea cliff, with life-size models, you can get to know, by sight and sound, the life and times of the Skellig Monks. www.skelligexperience.com

For Shore anglers, there are many parts of Ballinskelligs Bay which are suitable for rock or surf fishing. In addition to the usual types of fish, Bass are readily taken and this can even be accomplished on a fly, an experience rarely forgotton. A great spot for Bass fishing is from the beach below Fuchsia Lodge or visit one of the many other surf beaches in the bay such as Waterville, Reenroe or Derrynane. Guestbook for Fuchsia Lodge
"Thank you for making our first family vacation in Ireland unforgettable. The lodge exceeded my expectations. Not only did you provide all of the comforts of home, the layout and design of the lodge created a very warm, inviting and tranquil atmosphere. Next year, we plan to visit during the summer. Once we coordinate our holiday with the office, I will request booking for two weeks. Again thank you for your hospitality. We look forward to visiting next year. " - The Calhoun Family, Germany - September 2008
"…a fantastic two weeks. It was the perfect base from which to explore Kerry. The trip to the Skelligs is not to be missed. The views from the property are truly spectacular with some breathtaking sunsets. . . the kitchen was brilliantly equipped, so we were able to gorge ourselves on the freshest sea food from the local fishmonger. Sad to be leaving." - The Curtis Family, UK, June 2008.

". . . we had a great stay at Fuchsia Lodge. It really is a unique property which you must be justly proud of. I have been holidaying in Kerry for over 30 years and have stayed in a lot of different places . . . Fuchsia Lodge has been the best so far! We will definitely be back! " - John Murphy, UK
"What a wonderful time our family had at Fuchsia Lodge! There was so much to do... We played golf at both courses, visited the Skelligs and went kayaking at Ballinskelligs Bay – even saw some dolphins!! The property lived up to all our expectations and beyond. We had our breath taken away by the fantastic views from the living room... Amazing! We didn't know Waterville before and are so thrilled to have been introduced to such a magical place - we shall definitely be back! " - – Mrs Salaris, UK, July 2008.
"Fantastic, beautiful house and location and everything was perfect. We had a wonderful time. There is lots and lots to see and do and even tho' we have been really busy, we have not done it all - golf, pony trecking, beaches, the sauna, garden, restaurants, walks and best of all, a trip to the Skelligs with Des Lavelle of Portmagee. I hope we'll be back soon. Excellent!" - Frederich & Valerie Morris, Dublin, Ireland.
