Enjoy the 3 day annual Caherciveen carnival and the famous Puck Fair held in Killorglin
You will really enjoy the warmth and friendliness of the Kerry people. The Irish refer to Kerry as the "Kingdom" as it is believed to be the closest thing to heaven on earth and its people are very happy to share it with you.
The Gulf Stream ensures that the climate remains mild with a good balance of sun, wind and rain June to September are generally the best months for weather however, this past two years both May and October were very dry warm and sunny.
The Waterville / Lohar area
Loher Beach House is perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, overlooking Ballinskelligs Bay and surrounded by Ireland’s highest mountain range. It is the ideal location to explore the "Ring of Kerry" and has the widest and most varied range of outdoor activities one could wish for.
Alternately, just relax in the luxury of our home and enjoy the spectacular scenary and array of wildlife.

The SouthWest of Ireland is home to some of the world's most renowned and prestigious golf courses - Waterville, Dooks, Ballybunion, Tralee and Killarney are amongst the top courses in the world and are all within easy reach. The new "Skellig Bay" links course is a rising star and is just 1 km from the house.
Please review our Guest Feedback section - This is just a snapshot of it but a key differentiator and will give you a good appreciation of what people enjoy about holidaying at Loher Beach House and why they come back to us year on year.
Waterville has also attracted many celebreties over the years, for example Charlie Chaplain, who loved it so much he made it his home in retirement. World famous golfers travel here regularly to enjoy the challenge of the world renowned links courses - even Tiger Woods. I have detailed below a general overview together with a more detail on of some of the most popular venues and activities plus there is lots of information at the house for you, including maps :
As the name implies we are surrounded by water hence the area is also renowned for its diverse range of water based activities - for example kayaking - enjoy a day dolphin, seal and basking shark spotting, Watch the Sea birds working and do a spot of fishing over the inshore reefs & creeks for Bass, Mullet & Mackeral. Join a diving trip to explore the magical underwater environment - On tap are some of the best and most renowned diving sites in Europe. Surfing is now becoming popular; in fact there are local meets regularly both in Waterville and just a km from the house.
There are several idylic Blue Flag Beaches, such as Derrynane, Ballinskelligs, the White Strand and Kells Beach. Plus you have the beautiful secluded Loher Beach just below the house. Hence Beach combing in the many rock pools is superb way to relax and there are so many choices of beach that you will never find a crowded one
If you are a keen angler, like myself you will be spoilt for choice. For years Waterville has been a mecca for anglers who come here to enjoy the Game and sea angling. From the Lakes & rivers Sea trout and salmon are the the main quarry. . In fact, the largest Sea Trout in Ireland is always caught locally on the Lough Currane system and every year. My personal best Sea Trout is 9lb 6 oz and is mounted on display in the lounge.
Sea Angling is also excellent from the shore or a boat. Shore fishing for Bass & pollack is superb as is the Deep Sea fishing from where some of my sea angling friends have captured monster Skate over 200lbs, conger to 60lb and Tuna to 80lb. In fact this coastline also produces some of Irelands largest specimen sea species each year
For families, there is something for everyone; there are lots of attractions in the area - in fact just a 15 minute walk from the house is the ancient 6th century Loher Ring Fort. The excellent world renowned Skellig Experience Interpretive Centre at PortMagee provides information on the UNESCO Skelligs World Heritage Site. But - why not visit the site in person, boat trips depart from the centre and from Waterville. Other attractions in the area include Derrynane House and Gardens, The Old Barracks, Glanleam House, Cill Rialaig, Kells House & Gardens, The Staigue Fort & Ballycarbery Castle. The Old Cable Station Museum - also depicts the history of the first transatlantic cable which was run many years ago from Waterville via Ballinskeeligs and Valentia.
There are numerous walking and cycling routes in the area, including the world famous "Kerry Way", which follows the coastline and passes just at the rear of Loher Beach House. The spectacular "Skellig Ring", however, is a must do trip either by whatever means of transport as it offers stunning views of the coastline and Skellig Rocks. Also Chocoholics can stop and sample the unique and very special hand made chocolates, or a "Solid" easter egg at the Skellig Chocolate factory
Waterville Golf Links
Links land is a geological rarity. Waterville is rated among the top 5 courses in Ireland and the top 20 links courses in the world. www.watervillegolflinks.ie
Skellig Bay Golf Course
The course opened for play in Spring 2006 and has already been rated in Irelands “Top 50”.

The Skellig Experience
Here, you can experience many aspects of those offshore Skellig islands while remaining on the dry land, in a custom built, stone clad, grass roofed, prize winning building located right on the waterfront beside the Valentia Island bridge at Valentia, County Kerry! Here, through re-creations and models you can study the works and lives of the Skellig monks of the early Christian period, their activities, their endurance and their dedication in gaining a foothold on a tiny, inhospitable, offshore island and creating a community there that survived for some 600 years. In The Skellig Experience’s 80-seat auditorium, a 16-minute audio-visual presentation will take you in the footsteps of those Skellig monks, and wonder at the legacy of architecture that they left behind. In The Skellig Experience’s re-created Skellig sea cliff, with life-size models, you can get to know, by sight and sound, the life and times of the Skellig Monks.

Fishing in Waterville
Waterville is a Game and Sea Anglers paradise. The Lough Currane system includes five Loughs which offer the best Sea Trout fishing in Europe. Boats and/or Ghillies are available details at www.loughcurrane.com . For Shore anglers, there are numerous beach and rock fishing marks all around the Bay. In addition to the usual types of fish, Bass are readily taken on both lures and the fly, an experience rarely forgotton. A great spot for Bass fishing is from the beach below Lohar Beach House, alternatively visit one of the many other surf beaches in the bay such as Waterville, Reenroe or Derrynane. The rocks towards hogs head regularly produce specimen Wrasse and Pollack as well as conger eels and Mackerel. I have also caught the occasional Trigger fish. Many of the best marks are within walking distance of the house. Superb Deep Sea fishing is available for parties or individuals.
For sea fishing take a look at www.cfb.ie.
I am happy to give advice or help recommend and/or arrange guides or trips.
Derrynane House & Gardens
Derrynane House is the ancestral home of Daniel O'Connell, lawyer, politician and statesman. Situated on 120 hectares of parklands. The gardens are particularly spectacular and lead down to a blue flag beach. The planting is sub-tropical due to the mild climate thanks to the Gulf Stream. Location: 4 miles from the house (off N70 - "Ring of Kerry"). Outdoor self-guiding trail.

Well they say that you have to pay for quality and that's what this venue provided. Everything in the property was top quality and exactly as specified so we had no complaints whatsoever. We were lucky with the weather and had a glorious week of sunshine, made magical by the wonderful sunrises and sunsets across the bay. A great venue for those who love touring the countryside, walking, golfing or fishing; or perhaps just some peace and quiet. Personally, I enjoyed the walks along the beaches and visiting the many places of interest to take-in the views. |
Guestbook for Loher Beach House
When looking for the ideal holiday venue for your vacation it is often a gamble. You can rest assurred that is not the case with our Irish home. Loher Beach House is everything it say on the tin and to prove it have a wealth of genuine excellent reviews from our customers - something many other properties lack. In our view this is a key element of our customers selection criteria. We have many however, we have included a few below:
"A Little Piece of Heaven" - G - Twells - August 2010
What a place. After we arrived on a lovely sunny day we quickly settled in. The whole vista is spectacular! The house is just so nice it was not like a holiday home. With comfy seating, lovely art on the walls rather than the usual prints, superb showers and a kitchen that is actually better appointed than our own, it was just lovely. The garden is beautifully planted and landscaped. Our children loved it with plenty of space to play safely there and in the super rock pools down on the local beach. The whole family experience was faultless. The owners were great to deal with and Mary the housekeeper made sure we had all we needed including changing the bed linen and towels for the second week – very refreshing to get such good service.
Some of the things we enjoyed – The walks - so many just turn left and keep walking, Horse riding along the beach and right past the bungalow, rock pooling and fishing from the rocks for mackerel - we actually got enough for tea. We also drove round the Skellig ring which has some amazing sites and stopped at the chocolate factory – lovely!!. Overall just brilliant.

Best in Kerry – September 2010 - The Baldwins
This was our second time here as we holiday regularly in Kerry and this home is the most luxurious rental we have found. The entire bungalow is superbly equipped throughout and the webpage description hardly does it justice.
Comfort and fittings apart, Loher Beach House is set in the most magnificent location. The open plan layout really makes the most of the stunning views of Ballinskelligs Bay and the adjoining mountains; the sunsets seen from the dinner table were fantastic! The spotting scope in the lounge is a nice touch too - we found it very relaxing watching the variety of wild life.
Lovely Loher Beach is just a short walk away and the new Skellig Bay Links Golf course is just along the road. We found it excellent and very good value compared to Waterville Links. I have to say that prices have come down generally this year plus the exchange rate is a good deal better.
Next year is already booked
Jason & Monica - US based in Germany - June 2009 - Best Location in Europe to Date
My family and I have travelled all over the European continent to places such as Rome, Paris, Venice, London, Mallorca, Barcelona and Amsterdam. Without question, our stay at The Loher Beach House was by far our favourite place, so far. The views from this true get-away would not be done justice with mere words. But, if I must, the views are spectacular. Ballinskelligs Bay, the countryside and surrounding wildlife provided the perfect setting for some much needed rest and relaxation. Aside from the picturesque landscape, the home itself was truly marvellous. A fantastic kitchen with the best amenities made cooking meals for our family of 6 a delight. We found the quaint, seaside town of Waterville to provide adequate supplies for cooking gourmet meals in a home with solid granite counters, full stove, conventional oven, convection oven and dishwasher. We were surprised to find a very clean and comfortable living arrangement with ample space for our family to spread out. Comfortable beds, clean and well maintained bathrooms with full tile and plenty of hot water made our evenings enjoyable after long days of exploring Kerry. Port Magee, Cahirciveen and all places in between welcomed us with warm smiles and friendly conversation. The local residents were very warm and kind as the welcomed us into their corner of paradise. Some of our favourite restaurants include The Red Fox Inn, on N70 just past Killorglin and The Blind Piper on N70 just past Waterville on the way to Kenmare. In Kenmare, we recommend the Seafari, a boat trip through the bay capped off with complimentary coffee and whiskey.
If it's golf you're after...ask and ye' shall receive. There are two local courses to choose from; The Links at Waterville, a top 5 in Europe course, or Skellig Bay Golf Club which you pass through on your way to house. We found the course so breathtaking that we spent as much time taking pictures as we did swinging clubs. The staff was incredible and friendly. If you can't bring your own clubs, not to worry, they provide Titleist clubs for rent.
The owners of this property were friendly, quick to respond and facilitated a special request for a bottle of champagne on our anniversary. The monetary transactions were seamless and the return of our deposit was without delay. We would recommend this property to anyone who wishes to truly enjoy a relaxing vacation with good food, good golf, great Guiness, stunning views and friendly people
JMD - Memphis, USA - July 2008 - My wife and I were a little apprehensive about renting a house off the internet and travelling from the U. S. to Ireland for a week. However, when we got there, we were most pleasantly surprised. Everything was PERFECT. The house was wonderfully situated on a country road about two miles from the centre of Waterville, a small town in the southwest corner of Ireland. The house is new and has all of the finest and most modern appliances. The housekeeper was very attentive and able to answer all of our questions in a prompt and courteous manner. The view from the front of the house overlooking the Atlantic and the islands was magnificent. We took daily walks down the road in front of the house and were able to meet some of the neighbors, who were very friendly. A short drive took us into Waterville, where we encountered fine restaurants, a grocery store and shopping. Of course, the world famous Waterville Golf Links is about 10 minutes away. A closer golf course is also available for play. We travelled to nearby Kenmare, Valencia, Portmagee, and the Aran Islands for shopping, sightseeing, and just "vegging out." It was a great vacation. We will definitely go again and stay at the Allen house.
Joe from Memphis.
Roo - Twickenham UK - June 2008 - Wonderful Waterville
Loher Beach House far exceeded our expectations, as the house and location is wonderful with breathtaking views over the bay. The house has been finished to a very high and luxurious standard and offers everything you need for your stay. The location really is idyllic - offering a relaxing and tranquil environment, yet only a short drive from the lovely town of Waterville, with great restaurants and local amenities.
There are lots of things to see and do in the area, which means there's something for everyone or just sit back and enjoy the view.
The house is a credit to the owners who are very easy to deal with and who go out of their way to ensure that you enjoy your stay, with recommendations on restaurants and places to see.
We loved it so much we've already rebooked for this year. I highly recommend the house and area - you won't be disappointed.
AJ - Ashtead UK - July 2008 - A Place of Solitude & Great Scenery
The bungalow is extremely comfortable and well positioned for stunning views of Ballinskelligs Bay. To watch the seabirds (gannets) feeding is an awesome sight! The furniture and fittings are of the highest quality - a real home from home. The house was spotlessly clean.
We travelled to Kerry Airport and hired a car from Europcar for a week. The journey to the bungalow took about 2 hours although we stopped on the way for food. The roads are good and not too crowded - particularly in June when we visited.
Waterville is close enough to provide shops and restaurants - it can be walked but a car is a better bet and essential to take in the Kerry Ring scenery. The Oyster Bar in Waterville is a great venue for some local gossip on the latest catches - be it loch or sea. The food there is wholesome too, as is the Guiness!
There are plenty of local sporting facilities - golf, sea fishing from the beach and boat fishing from nearby Caheersiveen Harbour to mention a few. The walks around the bungalow are terrific and no traffic to speak of makes for peace and quiet.
A boat trip to the Skellig Rocks from Cahersiveen is a must if the weather is favourable. The tea shops and art shops in Sneem are well worth a visit, as is Killarney. Don't miss the views at Muckross and the pony/trap ride to the pass!!!
There is so much to see and do around this corner of Ireland that you can return again and again yet never be bored. The weather patterns change so often that in one day you can experience everything from sun to rain and the seascape is extraordinary as the colours change with the weather.
Thanks Ann and John for allowing us to use your home and for the chance to see this part of what is truly the Emerald Isle.
Emil Tunbridge Wells UK - June 2009- Extraordinary accommodation and setting
This stone cottage is completely modern, very warm, clean and beautifully finished with proper heating, first class cooking facilities and wonderful fixtures and fittings. Its a credit to the owners. The location is superb for the views, walks, beach fishing, sight seeking and the like. We were amazed to see hares in the garden and dolphins in the bay. I stayed at the cottage just after it was completed in September 2006 for the last week of the salmon and sea trout fishing season. I visited again in June 2007. The accommodation was faultless, unlike the weather, which failed to deliver the migrating fish for the week I was in Ireland. It did deliver the following week. Moral of this story...Take two weeks holiday here.
T&M Alton Hants England - April 2008 - A lovely stay in the most beautiful surroundings
We found the Bungalow very comfortable and welcoming, spacious and airy, with everything you could wish for in a holiday home. Placed just back from the seafront, with spectacular views all round and with lots of space for fun and relaxation in the garden. As an aside, the garden is shared with the local population of 'Hares' which are fascinating to watch.
We were looking for a walking holiday and we couldn't have found better. As a retired couple, the walks, both from the bungalow and indeed anywhere around the coast were magnificent and we had no difficulty in coping with the terrain. Some lovely restaurants in and around Waterville and surrounds, all with a great selection of fresh fish dishes, as you would expect in a coastal area. Sadly, we didnt take our golf clubs with us but the two championship courses at Waterville looked in splendid order and challenging, to say the least.
Thank you John and Ann for loaning us your beautiful retreat, we look forward to the next time.
