The Cumbria region

The Lake District is arguably the most beautiful part of England, with dramatic mountains, scenic lakes and peaceful woods and valleys. It is a paradise for walkers, or for those who just want to soak up the scenery. It is also a great destination for activity holidays - sailing or canoeing on the lakes, mountain biking and other outdoor activities. The nearby beach at Seascale is great place for walks, beach-combing or simply watching the sun go down. And as England's premier tourist area, the Lakes has numerous attractions and things to do for all age groups.

Wasdale Head

Wasdale is one of the most spectacular and unspoilt parts of the Lake District. The view across Wastwater towards Great Gable has been voted "The Nation's Favourite View" and it is not hard to see why, with the dramatic Wasdale Screes plunging almost 2000 feet into the waters of the lake. A few minutes walk from Roan Wood Cottage will bring you to this stunning viewpoint. Behind the cottage are walks directly up into the hills - to Greendale Tarn, Buckbarrow, Middle Fell and Seatallen. Wasdale Head is 3 miles away and numerous walks radiate out to Pillar, Great Gable, Scafell and Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain. There are two excellent pubs in Nether Wasdale, 2 miles away, and a pleasant walk through the fields. Gosforth is a 10 minute drive, where you will find shops, pubs, a cafe and a restaurant.

"Ive already re-booked"

Beautiful cottage, has everything needed included maps - very clean - perfect base to explore the Wasdale area, which is outstandingly gorgeous. The owners respond quickly to email enquiries and made the whole booking process simple. We walked Scafell Pike and Illgill Head, and up to Styhead Tarn, we also walked up Middle Fell / Seatallen / Buckbarrow and this walk starts right outside the cottage. Close to Wasdale Head Inn and Nether Wasdale - perfect for pub lunches. We also found a lovely secluded spot by the Lake for a bit of relaxation. I actually have nothing negative to say. If you love walking or just want a relaxing break away from it all, this cottage would be a perfect base. We loved it so much, we booked again within days of returning home. Roll on January 2015..!!

"Immaculately clean, cosy and welcoming"

As soon as we booked Roan Cottage we had a feeling that this was going to be a good place to stay - and it was! All the information beforehand was efficiently and helpfully provided by the owners, Hugh and Wendy, and the cottage itself was super - immaculately clean, cosy and warm, and very well-equipped. The location is wonderful - looking directly out on Wastwater Screes at the front, whilst right from the back of the house a path leads invitingly to Greendale Tarn. Care and thought has gone into making this a welcoming and practical base for walkers and outdoor enthusiasts. We loved it! Thank you, Hugh and Wendy.
