The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region

Known for warm dry summers (3 days' rain in 4 months in 2009), the Vendee is popular as a holiday destination, with visitors coming from the UK, Belgium, Holland and Germany, as well as from within France. The landscape is essentially rural, with rolling countryside, mainly below 220 metres elevation.

Warm summers, long (and can be fairly hot (38C) days). Lots of history. This was once "English" Aquitaine - Queen Eleanor's home at Neuil sur l'Autize is only 30km away. The Venise Verte (the drained fens) are also an interesting tourist attraction, with trips in powered craft, canoes and punts. There is a good bar/restaurant in the village (2km) and several more in the surrounding area. Futuroscope and Puy du Fou are each just over an hour away. Varied beaches (from very quiet to frenetic are within an hour-and-a-quarter, although all can be busy in July and August. There are several inland lakeside "beaches" and watersport facilities within half an hour. There is an extensive network of cycle/walking tracks, and several riding stables locally.

"Warmest of welcomes"

23rd -30th July 2011

Le Pinier Gites had been recommended to us by some friends who had stayed the previous year and had the most enjoyable time.
We had heard about how welcoming Jane, Ian and Murphy were towards new guests on arrival, but could not have anticipated the genuine warmth and kindness we received. It felt like we were being welcomed into their home. The welcome meal was not only wonderful, but also a kind and thoughtful introduction and gave us the opportunity to get to know our hosts. They were certainly unlike any previous owners of Gites we had encountered before. We have been holidaying in France for the last 12 years and never felt so at home.

The Gites were tastefully furnished and very well equipped. If we ever needed anything, Ian and Jane were very happy to help.

The pool was perfect for the children and adults, with plenty of sun loungers and parasols. In the barn held a host of games should the weather turn wet!

The surrounding countryside was stunning, they are in a beautiful location, with lots of sightseeing opportunities, local markets and outdoor activities to experience.

The whole experience was delightful and relaxing. But above all, Jane and Ian's warm friendship, fantastic cooking and location made the holiday very special indeed.

"Amazing, Jane and Ian very friendly, every need catered for. Fab Pool and surroundings"

Very relaxing, meal on arrival great start to the holiday. The children loved the large garden, going for walks with Jane and the dog Murphy learning about wild flowers and of course the pool was fabulous. It was hard for us to drag the children away to explore the beautiful French countryside. Thoroughly reccommended.

Thanks so much for your wonderful review .... so pleased we could help to make your stay a memorable one.... and thanks for taking the trouble to write a review.... very much appreciated

"Fantastic accommodation, fantastic surroundings and fantastic hosts"

Having been to the gite for just one week in 2010, we decided that we would go back for two weeks in 2011 and it was the best decision we made. Jane, Ian and Murphy (the dog) were as welcoming as ever and, because we knew our way around from the previous year, we were settled into Grandmere's in no time. In fact, Ian said that we currently hold the record for being the fastest family from arriving by car to being in the pool! The pool is one of the best features of the gite as it is always a hit with kids and adults alike. The barn is great for drying off wet towels and we always make use of the portable barbeques which are provided free of charge, including lighters, charcoal etc. The welcome meal is wonderful and gives you that first night to fully unwind before heading to the supermarket the next day. Ian's weekly trip to the bakers on a Sunday is perfect too - it means you can have coffee and croissant without even leaving the gite. And leaving is the hardest part! There is so much to see and do, the surrounding countryside is beautiful, and even the kids have started to admire a lovely view now when they see one!

Thankyou so much for taking the trouble to write a review... it is very much appreciated.... so pleasd we helped you have wonderful holidays here
