Tuscan Skies
About the home
Sleeps 10. Very spacious and beautifully furnished, on two floors joined by a spiral staircase. A relaxing getaway away from the tourist hordes, but also within easy reach of the treasures of Florence, Siena and Pisa. Seaside is forty minutes' drive. Ideal for walking or for hardy bikers who like challenging hills!
Standing on a small hillock immediately off the road, Tuscan Skies has magnificent views all round. To one side, Volterra "city of magic and mystery" stands on top of one side of the valley, while ancient Montecatini Val di Cecina sits on the other.
Tuscan Skies was built as two separate apartments which we have joined as one property. As a result, there is ample, airy space for our guests to relax and enjoy themselves. Guests always comment on the high quality of furnishings as well as its wonderful location.
On the upper floor are three bedrooms. The master bedroom has an en-suite shower room; the Courtyard Room and Terrace Room (with top quality sofabed) share a large shower room. The Terrace Room has access to a small terrace - ideal for sitting in the evening. This room can double up as a relaxing lounge. There is a substantial, fully-equipped kitchen/living room with magnificent views to Volterra..
The lower floor has a double room with four-poster bed. This floor has its own comfortable living area with fully-appointed kitchen and separate large shower room. A spacious separate room with double bed settee can be used as an additional bedroom. (Alternatively, the bed settee can be moved into the living area to provide comforatble seating for larger groups). The private garden with barbecue overlooks Val di Cecina and Montecatini.
All beds are queen size.
External access to the upper floor is via the courtyard and to the lower floor via the garden entrance.
“This is another Tuscany, and one that few people take the trouble to get to know, but which is richly rewarding” (Italia Magazine, December 2009)
Volterra was the setting for 'New Moon' from Stephanie Meyer's Twilight Saga.

The Tuscany / Pisa Province region
A magical area of Tuscany, almost equal distance from Pisa, Siena and Florence. A quiet retreat in the beautiful countryside away from the tourism of Chiantishire, this is the real Tuscany. Beautiful towns like San Gimignano are just 30 minutes' drive.
Andrea Bocelli's hometown of Lajatico and his serene Teatro del Silenzio is 15 minutes away. Views of historical Volterra and the ancient Etruscan township of Montecatini Val di Cecina from the property.
Florence is not to be missed (though best avoided in the mid-day heat of summer - go early or late in the day). Siena has its own fabulous atmosphere, especially the Campo where the palio horse race is run twice a year. And you will be amazed by the Leaning Tower of Pisa; you have seen it in thousands of pictures, but seeing the real thing is an experience you should not miss.
There are excellent beaches near Cecina (40 minutes' drive), or visit Viareggio for a different seaside experience.
You do not need to spend all day in the car to see soem wonderful sights. There are dozens of mediaeval villages and spa towns to visit. As well, you can drop it at many vineyards and farms to taste their own wines, olive oil and other produce.
The Volterra area
Volterra has Etruscan, Roman and mediaeval remains, including an impressive Roman theatre, plus several museums. The main traditional industry is alabaster, and there are plenty of shops/workshops where you can see alabaster products being made.
There are festivals virtually every week in one or other of the local towns. Volterra's best festival is Volterra AD1398. It takes place over two weekends in August. The centre of the town is sealed off and given over to middle ages stalls, children's games and sports such as tug-o'-war and crossbow contests. At other times there are flag-throwing contests, food markets and street theatre.
For 'New Moon' fans, there are guided tours. The tourist information office has free maps of locations from the book.
Excellent restaurants are to be found not only in Volterra but in all of the local villages. The nearest village is Saline di Volterra. Apart from some fine local eateries, there is a good range of food shops.

We went to Tuscan Skies after a complicated house move and desperately in need of a break. The apartment is so well equipped and comfortable that we were able to start relaxing immediately. The pool helped too. It is situated in an ideal place as there are local shops for basic necessities a few minutes drive away and not much further is Volterra, a wonderfully interesting and historic hill town. The landscape is rolling and very agricultural: crops were being cut during our stay and the Spar shop in Saline offered locally grown apricots at a snip. We also loved the restaurant in the square at Montecatini; lots of local atmosphere in the evening there too. All in all a brilliant week; wish it had been longer. Response: We can't imagine a more relaxing escape after you've moved house, especially after the delays! One of the joys of the farming landscape is that the colours change all of the time. Even though we know the view so well, we still want to keep taking n3ew photos of it because it changes so much with the season and the lighting conditions. We trust that you are now fully settled into your new home. |
