The Austrian Alps region

St.Kanzian is located 446m above sea level, with a length of 1800m and a width of 800m, it has a depth of up to 48m. The lake was created during the Ice Age, which was followed by other lakes in the immediate vicinity - the Kleinsee, the Turnersee, and the Gösselsdorfer Sonnegger lake. Because of its vast depth, the Klopeiner See has been best preserved.

Due to the very low movement of the lake streams, the Klopeiner See can reach even up to 27 degrees Celsius in summer time, and is also the warmest lake in Austria. Besides of all the pleasures of beach and bathing, the surrounding area also offers active visitors numerous recreational opportunities: hiking, running, golfing, cycling, fishing, surfing, diving and horse riding. In addition, various events and entertainments are organized around the lake.

For a relatively small town, St. Kanzian offers quite a lot in terms of sightseeing. The best approach to the combination of landscape and history is probably the "Kulturwanderweg Gracara". It is a theme hiking path derived from the Slovene word for "castle" and leads hikers to some spectacular view points, as well as the most important sites of archaeological excavation. For further information on the local finding of Gracara, you can visit the "Keltenmuseum" (Museum of Celtic Culture).

Within reach, you will find St. Veit an der Glan town and the fortress Burg Hochosterwitz. Carinthia?s capital Klagenfurt is not far, either.

Volkermarkt

For cyclists, the famous Drauradweg is about 10 minutes walk, or just few minutes away by bike from the apartment. Along the Völkermarkter reservation (harsher mountain path) or Jauntal (much easier path more suitable for inexperienced drivers), many kilometers pathway will lead you into the nature protected areas, and diversity of plants and birdlife.

Numerous smaller and larger lakes in the area are irresistible for anglers. Small lake, reservoir Freibacher, Drava ... trout, pike, perch & Co are located here. In Galicia region, about 15 km from "Landhouse House Noreia" there is Flying Fishing area. If required, we can also Fischer tickets for you so that you get the same in the morning already.

For all golfers golf St.Kanzian Park is in close proximity to the apartment - about 5 km away. Here you can play golf on the 18 hole course panorama - suitable for beginners and professionals.

But not only because of the water temperature is the St.Kanzian in Carinthia very popular - also the surrounding natural landscape is fascinating and it is ideal for hiking. In winter you can ice skating or cross country skiing on the lake - the closest ski area is the Petzen - about 25 Km of which the "country house Noreia" away.

Historical monuments

The parish church is dedicated to the siblings Kanzius, Kanzian and Kanzianilla - martyrs that were executed in Aquileia in 290. The oldest record of the parish church dates back to the 12th century. However, it is likely to be a fair chunk older. It ranks among the main attractions in terms of classic sightseeing: The core of the church is Romanesque, the choir is late Gothic and dates back to 1518. The second floor was built in a way that the church could also be used for defense purposes. The main nave is Historicist and was built between 1849 and 1860.

Another church worth noting is the cemetery church "Hl. Margareta in Stein". Nearby you find an ancient "Bildstock", a religious memorial that was built in commemoration of Countess Hildegard von Stein, a medieval woman that is locally worshipped as a saint.

The tower of "Hl. Margareta in Stein" contains a bell that is called "Wunschglöcklein" ("little bell of wishes"). According to a local legend, young and unmarried women (virgins, of course) used to go to the church and ring this bell in order to receive blessings for finding a man. St. George himself was said to be in charge of the business of finding an appropriate spouse for them.

The village of St Kanzian became a separate municipality only in 1866. At around this time, Carinthia became a popular destination with Viennese aristocrats that spent a few weeks every summer by the lakes of this province.
