About the home

Following a recent renovation, the lodge is a perfect self-catering option for families or small groups.

It comprises a mezzanine bedroom with extra king sized bed, together with its own wash basin, and overlooks the large private sitting room which has the most spectacular views of the river Paiva and neighbouring valley.

There is also a second bedroom, a loft niche for two single beds (suitable for kids), which together with the mezzanine bedroom shares a separate bathroom with shower. A third, en-suite, single bedroom is also part of the Lodge with its own separate entrance

The large sitting room is made up of several sofas and seating, TV & video, free satellite TV, and large cathedral windows opening across the width of the building which leads onto a balcony with breathtaking views over the river valley.

The kitchen and dining room is fully equipped for 12 people and includes wine glasses, oven, hob, fridge freezer and microwave. The large dining table overlooks the valley through a grand window.

Exquisite linen, large towels and beach towels are provided, and cleaning and linen changes are done weekly.

Additionally, with its own private entrance, there is a separate single en-suite bedroom next to the main lodge, if required.

It is also the perfect spot for those who are looking for peace and tranquillity, "far from the madding crowd", in an area of outstanding beauty. The Quinta nestles in a green and lush valley: the sides of the mountain are clad in eucalyptus and pine, and the tops are open moorland which in the spring time is covered in heather of the most beautiful colours. In the valley floor grow warm Mediterranean crops which are available from the garden in season.

Legend relates that the artist, Picasso, visited this estate on a number of occasions as the guest of the original owner of the property, the German artist Heinz Kraken.

The terrace below the lodge has lots of outdoor furniture and leads to a natural springwater shallow pool. The gardens cover an enormous area of 16,000 square metres consisting of vine-laden terraces, leading to a large lawn and eventually the River Paiva where there is a man-made terrace and private sandy beach for guests. Fly fishing is amongst the best in the area and there is a large choice of varied and breathtaking walks.

The Quinta is very pet friendly (the owners have their own Labradors) and is an exciting experience for children. All seasons are a joy: Winter offers the chestnut harvest, Summer and Spring for walking and swimming or just lazing in hammocks reading, whilst Autumn is the grape harvest and the whole region is steeped in this culture.

Short stays of one or more nights are available and for long Winter lets, for example October to March there will be a discount offered so please enquire for these special rates. Children are charged at a rate of 10€ to 30€ per day depending on their age.

The Northern Mountains region

Known as a painter's paradise, the area and indeed views from the rooms are perfect for the aspiring or established painter.
Fishing is an absolute must, with an idyllic, flowing river at the bottom of the garden with Trout, Largemouth Bass, Barbel and carp.
There are many museums to visit nearby, with Art, History and Geographical among the most unique.
The locals are charming, helpful and very kind to tourists, and children are always welcomed with open arms.
The climate is ideal with four seasons, all never extreme but long hot summers.
The food and wine is amongst the best in Portugal, at very reasonable prices.

The Viseu area

On the River Douro, 35 minutes drive away, there are several Quintas who offer table wine and Port-wine tastings. Nearby are two renowned Health Spas which offer various types of specialised treatments. 40 minutes drive from here there is a very entertaining riverside Water Park which is ideal for little ones and adults alike. There is a tennis court 10 mins drive away for the more energetic!

Aveiro ( known as the Venice of Portugal) and Costa Nova, a beautiful and unspoilt beach village, is a 1 hour drive away. The beach is over 6 km. long and very clean, with beautiful dunes and fine sand and there are wonderful seafood restaurants to be found there. Our nearest city Viseu has a very good 18 hole golf course. It is 35 minutes drive away, never crowded and offers very reasonable daily rates. We will supply information and arrange tee-off times if required.
Viseu, our nearest city, has wonderful shopping, a variety of good restaurants,beautiful historical buildings to see and a fine choice of museums to visit. There is a skating rink and a state of the art Water Park. Souvenir shops stock the best of Portuguese Pottery and Table Linen.During all of summer therre are Festivals in all the surrounding villages which are great fun to visit and a country fair which lasts all of August.

Porto Airport is 1 hour 15 minutes drive away and Lisbon 3 hours. Easy Jet, Iberia and TAP are the main airlines that fly from the UK.

If you are travelling by train, the nearest railways are at Regua (Douro line) and Nelas (Lisbon to Paris line).

Due to the distances and location, a car is essential.
