Chateau Ridou
About the home
The 17th century Chateau Ridou sits at the foot of the Maas within 15km of the Belgium border. The estate stretches over a 6 hectare valley in the midst of a 2000 hectare Ardenne forest. The only entrance road to Chateau Ridou is along a private tow path of 3km. This is the ideal place to de-stress and enjoy all that the area offers. On the estate itself you can play tennis/badminton/table tennis/fishing/petanque (please bring along your own equipment). Also starting at Chateau Ridou are many hiking and mountain bike routes - it's even possible to rent mountain bikes on request.
For a group wishing to dine on site we have a large reception barn for hire that we have furnished as a cafe. Chateau Ridou has a large open fire place in the dining room; you will feel like you're back in the 17th century as a master of the castle. It is also possible to bring your horse if you wish. The chateau may be rented by itself for groups of up to 20, or with its gites (farmhouses) as well for groups of up to 45. If the chateau is rented on its own the gites will not be rented independently to another group.
The chateau was built in the 17th century by Oranje-Nassau with rocks from the mountain next to the chateau. It was fully renovated and rebuilt in the 18th century by Leopold II (King of Belgium). He bought it for his mistress at the time and planted many exotic trees (such as palm trees - the oldest tree is now more than 300 years old) that came from the Belgian colony of the Congo. The property today boasts a fantastic collection of rare plants and trees. The oldest building on the estate is the tannery that was also built from the same stone as the chateau. The Northern France / Champagne-Ardenne region

The Ardennes region derives its character from its river valleys that consist of winding canyons reaching up to inspiring high green peaks. Namur itself is a great starting point for any exploration of the area. Set around a 19th Century Citadel, it has superb restaurants and a lively bar scene. Other towns worth a visit are Dinant, Rochefort, St Hubert and the delightful Bouillon (from where some of the region’s most dramatic scenery can be seen). The Meuse Valley can be explored by boat; alternatively one can canoe up the narrower and wilder River Lesse. Vireux has restaurants, markets and shops.
The Vireux area
Discover the diversity of this region: a colourful pallet of woodlands, pastures, valleys, small lakes and meandering rivers. Long walks and mountain biking can be a part of your holiday, along with canoeing on the Lesse.Or, for some culture, experience the Binche carnival. Characteristic farms and fairy tale castles like the chateau and Abbee at Chimay, or a visit to the Han caves, will make your holiday here complete.
