The Normandy region

There should be lots of information at the cottages but the following are a few “must do's” when in the area all within about 1 hour travelling and you may be able to research more online depending what you like doing:-

1. Bayeux tapestry and town.

2. The Normandy landing beaches are about 1 ¼ hours away with lots to see

3. Mont St. Michel and Granville on the coast to the west

4. Villedieu les Poeles (gods town of frying pans!!) 40 mins west market on tuesdays(check) and is renowned for copper and brass and bell foundries.

5. Swiss Normandy is an area of Normandy including the orne and calvados districts, south of the river seine. Its name comes from the river Orne that flows across the area, making deep gorges/cliffs and creating spectacular rocky landscapes. The main towns in Suisse normandy are Thury-Harcourt, Clecy and Pont D'ouilly.

6. Nearby, Falaise, birthplace of William the Conqueror and a castle restored with a modern twist.

7. Further south on the west coast are the submarine pens from wwii at St Nazaire

8. If you like walking try the Vire gorges, or the St. Sever forest which is very close. Valle Vire in direction of St. Lo is also with nice stops at La Chappelle sur Vire and Les Roches de Haur

With varied scenery and a choice of fine cuisine, a visit to Vire has plenty to offer. Vire is a historic town with a population of around 14,000. The town's strategic position in the centre of Basse-Normandy has been responsible for both its rise and fall throughout its history.

On our first visit to the area we were struck by the quiet, unhurried and calm atmosphere and were overwhelmed by the friendly welcome we got from the French. This area was badly affected in World War 2 and there is still a deep affection for the Allied forces for the liberation and the sacrifices they made. If you want to leave behind the stresses of modern day living for a quiet and peaceful location then this is the place for you. Vire and its surrounding villages offer all facilities with every shop you could possibly need including internet cafes and a bustling market each week.

Vire market again from memory is Friday and there is a tourist information centre and internet café near the main car park (free!!!) just off the centre.

Also nearby is a railway track converted to a footpath/bridleway if you fancy a day walking

If you like walking try the Vire Gorges or the St. Sever forest which is very close. Valle Vire in direction of St. Lo is also with nice stops at La Chappelle sur Vire and Les Roches de Haur

Nearby is Lake Dathee and is a nice gentle circular walk around the lake with picnic areas. Above the lake is a great 18 hole golf course and the views are brilliant.

Vire is famed for its many culinary delights that take pride of place on menus throughout the region. There are a number of restaurants located in the town and the local specialities include andouille sausages and salmon from the local river. The region boasts a wealth of fine restaurants, mostly family run, where the food is prepared from first principles at very reasonable prices.

The bar in St. Manvieu bocage near La Clartiere also has a few provisions and bread and is “very local” –worth a visit for the experience and the “plat du jour”. Also a “fish & chip” van run by an english family visits on a wednesday(check it is running) and you can eat them in the bar which is normally packed so get there early from 6pm.

The town was protected by an 8th century castle (now in ruins) and then expanded in the 12th Century by King Henry of England. A walk up to the top will reward you with fantastic views.

In the centre there is an impressive gate with a clock tower built in the 13th century and the church Notre Dame from the same period. The town's coat of arms, an arrow with two towers, decorates the sides of the clock tower. A spiral staircase goes to the top for extensive views out onto the nearby countryside.

The town has a museum in what was a medieval hospital. It is devoted to the history, traditions and artistic talents of Vire. The first section has a number of workshops showing local trades. The next section shows the town throughout its history with drawings and photographs. Then there is a collection of artefacts from local culture including costumes that Normans wear. Finally, the last section has a large selection of work by local artists.

Vire market again from memory is friday and there is a tourist information centre and internet café near the main car park (free!!!) just off the centre.

Sorry you had the "dust" problem and this is unusual as other reviews testify but we have passed on your comments to the housekeepers. Thank you. The heating is fully controllable and if not needed can be switched off/down. This was the first usage of the central heating this year although temperatures were still high as you mention. Sorry for the issues and those that can be addressed will be.

Many thanks and we are glad you enjoyed the cottage. We have tried to restore and furnish it as our own home rather than just a rental. We enjoy staying there as well and look forward to the peace and tranquillity and unhurried French rural life yet still being within a short distance of many interesting places to visit.
