The Normandy / Calvados region
The location is quite central to both the Calvados and Manche coastlines, superb for exploring much of Normandy with lots to do nearby. It's also not far if you fancy a trip into Brittany.
Normandy is a favourite with visitors from all over the world and the region of Calvados is particularly important due to the Normandy D-Day landing beaches and many historic sites and monuments. It's also famous for wonderful calvados, cider, cheeses and butter and the unique 'bocage' landscape ~ characteristic fields and hedge banks of the area, with rolling hills, occasional gorges, lakes and forests, and quiet country lanes lined with hazelnuts and blackberries. The area is totally unspoilt, free from crowds and rich with wildlife. The air is fresh, and the pace of life is restful and with temperatures usually a little warmer than Britain it makes for a longer summer and milder spring, autumn and winter. There is plenty to see and do for families or couples.
All of the other important Normandy attractions are within easy reach. A day trip to the D-Day landing beaches is something to remember forever, as is a visit to the Mont St Michel. The glamorous beach resort of Granville is well worth a visit, where there is also a regular ferry service to Jersey.
Not far away is the traditional market town of Villedieu-les-Poêlles (meaning City of God's Frying Pans), with its medieval alleys and ancient courtyards. Renowned for copper pans, and bursting with character and history, it has an enormous weekly market on Tuesdays where you can buy almost anything.
Vire / St Germaine de Tallevende area
La Martiniere is in a sleepy hamlet just over 2 miles from the village of St Germain de Tallevende so it's not far to get your fresh bread and pastries! There is a fabulous auberge at St-Germaine-de-Tallevende, along with a village bar and pharmacy. Also close by are the "Pont-es-Retour" waterfalls, a favourite picnic area, and La Martinière is also a stone's throw from the Dolmen at Mont-Savarin (Mount Savarin), a table-shaped megalith made from Vire granite.
La Martinière is close to the bustling town of Vire, which offers something for everyone. Families are well served by a huge water park at Vire with indoor and outdoor slides as well as a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Vire has a superb modern theatre, cinema, stylish cafés, nightlife, and some lovely shops, satisfying your need for culture and/or retail therapy! Vire is also something of a mecca for food-lovers with a weekly gourmet food market on Fridays which is a pilgrimage for foodies, with local fish, seafood, cheese, cream, charcuterie, bread, fruit and vegetables and the most wonderful stall with olives and spices. Vire has an impressive number of fêtes and festivals culminating in several weeks of street theatre and concerts during the summer months.
Other attractions close by include Saint Sever's Crown Forest with an arboretum and wildlife park and Lake Dathée, just outside Vire, offers wonderful lakeside walks, boating, sailing, windsurfing, fishing and a modestly priced but excellent golf course overlooking the lake. Lake Le Gast nature reserve is also not far.

Further details indoors: The house has four bedrooms, all with lovely wooden floors. The largest room has a king size bed and a further fold-out camp bed suitable for a child, or a cot. There are two further rooms with double beds and one with twin beds. Upstairs is also the bathroom with shower over and a separate toilet.
Downstairs is a hall with space for coats, shoes, etc. Off the hall to the left is the dining room - this is a wonderfully sunny room with huge window, large dining table, chairs and bench. A large dresser contains everything you'll need for dining, cutlery, china, plenty of glasses, jolly coloured plastic plates and bowls for children, etc. The dining room also has a woodburner. There is an archway through to a kitchen/cooking area with a new (Oct 06) Italian stainless steel 5-burner gas range cooker with vast oven, double sink, large pine preparation table with a cheerful red gingham check curtain behind which you'll find an excellent supply of pots and pans, baking dishes, vegetable steamer, etc. It's a very sociable set up for cooking, chatting & getting everyone to help! A door leads through to a rear kitchen area with a new whirlpool fridge/freezer, washing machine, iron, larder shelves, bins, etc. There is also a vanity unit and a cloakroom with toilet.
The lounge is large and sunny with comfortable sofas, big rugs, and an area which can be used for children with floor cushions, etc. It's very relaxing. There's a selection of games for adults & children.
Further details outdoors: La Martinière is set in 10 acres of tranquility. It has it's own hill 'Le Rocher' (The Rock), topped with granite boulders, with two beech woodlands on the sides and stunning views across the valley to La Lande Vaumont. There is also a wildlife area with a pretty stream. It's lovely to take a stroll around the land before dinner to sharpen up your appetite!
Adjacent to the house is a large parking area, suitable for quite a few cars, and a level mainly enclosed lawned area suitable for children. Garden furniture is provided, together with a barbecue. The house is south facing, providing a perfect sheltered and sunny spot to eat, relax and have a glass of wine whilst watching the sun set. It's a real sun trap.

Guestbook for La Martinière
"We had a great week.. We had some lovely afternoons watching the sun go down with a few glasses of wine, this carried on while star gazing during the evening. Very quiet location, saw little traffic, but town very convenient. Beds were really comfortable and there was plenty of room for 4 adults, 4 teenagers and one 10 year old. We made good use of the kitchen and cooked up some big family meals, just seemed so much more relaxing than eating out. Had some lovely walks, a few runs, and played golf at the local course, very relaxed attitude and also very quiet. Overall we would definitely recommend La Martinière to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday." The Jones & Trapski families, early April 2007
