The Loire Valley region
The Loire Valley is the Garden of France and the Mayenne rightly described as the prettiest département in the Pays de la Loire.
This is big open countryside land with big blue skies and woods and forests to explore along quiet country lanes. The weather is similar to southern England just warmer and longer summers and cooler, shorter winters. There is no real crime and no vandalism. The roads are empty and the people friendly, particularly if you make an effoirt to speak in their language, however badly ! Some people have said it's like England as they imagine it 60 years ago, but with better food and drink. It is an area steeped in history and picture-postcard villages.
The local villages and towns offer a variety of cafés and restaurants. Markets take place most days of the week with a huge variety of fresh seasonal products if you wish cook at home in our fully equipped kitchen or barbeque in the garden.

Car, bicycles or walking boots are essential. The wonderful man-made Sillé lake is just a walk away along quiet country lanes. It is a inland freshwater lake set in an immense forest of about 3350 hectares - the forest which can be seen clearly from the garden of Blanc Bonnet. Indeed from the cottage into the forest along quiet footpaths and country lanes is a delightful walk of about 15 minutes. There are large sandy beaches where you can have a cool drink or a meal, you can hire a pedalboat or canoe, fish, swim or sail. Cycles are available for hire by the hour, the morning or the day at Sillé beach and there are about a dozen cycle routes ranging from 3km to 26. Or simply go for a quiet walk in this lovely national park. Horse riding is also very popular here.
There are numerous small towns and villages all worth visiting. Larger towns include Evron with its impressive medieval basilica, and Le Mans, about 40 minutes drive with tiny cobbled streets, stunning cathedral and craftsmen working in front of visitors as well as the famous car racing.
The Alpes Mancelles , about 20 minutes drive is an area of outstanding beauty renowned for many walking and cycling routes along with canoeing on the beautiful river Sarthe.
There are must visit villages like St Céneri le Gérai [ www.saintceneri.org ] and the town of Fresnay-sur-Sarthe as well as St Suzanne, a medieval masterpiece perched high towering over the area, with antique shops and restaurants.
