The Dzukija region
Dzukija is situated in the south of Lithuania. The major cities of Dzukija region are Belarus. Vilnius, Lyda and Alytus. Forests and marshlands are a major feature of Dzukija. The biggest swamp in Lithuania, the Cepkeliu marsh, is also situated here.Dzukija is famous for the Dzukija National Park, The Dzukija was established as a National Park in 1991 in order to preserve the pine forests, the landscape and the villages of the region. If you want to explore outside of Vilnius there are plenty of unspoilt green areas, lakes, and forests. A popular tourist destination is Trakai castle. Trakai is a town situated between three lakes, 28 kilometres to the west of Vilnius. On your way there you travel through the historic lands of the former Duchy of Trakai, whose centre, Old Trakai, was the capital of Lithuania in the Middle Ages. Although the climate is cold in winter it is pleasantly warm in the summer with temperatures reaching +30c in July and August.
Vilnius / Vilnius Old Town area
In 2009, Vilnius becomes European Capital of Culture – the gate to the country celebrating its name millennium.
Vilnius has long been famous for hospitality, different nations used to live here with one accord and visitors would feel the city’s friendly atmosphere in no time and stay here for good. Indeed, among all travel memories the most precious one is that which reminds the warm and hospitable country where you feel awaited guest rather than redundant intruder.
It feels good to be welcomed with a smile and a caring attitude. The cosy city leaves an imprint in your memory and makes you want to return here and bring your family and friends.
If you have never been to Vilnius before then prepare for a treat! The capital city of Lithuania, Vilnius has always attracted tourists from across the globe. Its Old Town has been the centre of its cultural life for years. Many different architectural styles can be seen in the Old Town - from the Gothic of St. Anne’s Church to the Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, and Classic styles evident in the Old University.
Vilnius Old Town is the place where almost anyone feels good. It is surprising how far Italian Renaissance and Baroque have stretched to the North and how very much belonging these styles look amidst the buildings of Russian Byzantine style, Jewish elements, dwelling houses and even in the foundations of the remains of pagan structures. Vilnius is an authentic portrait of Lithuania. We are the way the city is; we live at the juncture of three cultural zones - Central, Northern and Eastern Europe. The Old Town of Vilnius is among the largest in Eastern and Central Europe, included int the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Vilnius architecture can be recognized in the American computer game Ghost Recon. True, only names can be recognized - there is a mismatch between the map and the actual reality.
Another must see is the Uzupis-A separate republic has been established in the Montmartre of Vilnius, a cosy place near the Vilnia River. The statutes of the republic advocate a spirit of tolerance and creativity. A visit to Vilnius would not be complete without a trip up the TV Tower. The Vilnius TV Tower is a 326.5 metre-high (1071 ft) building in the Karoliniškės microdistrict of Vilnius, Lithuania. It is the tallest building in Lithuania, with a viewing platform and revolving restaurant, where you can dine while watching spectacular sunsets. The TV tower played a major role in the events of January 13, 1991, when 14 unarmed civilians lost their lives and 700 were injured opposing the Soviet military seizure of the tower.
Apart from a wealth of historical buildings Vilnius is also a vibrant city which comes alive at night with bars, smart restaurants plus a good variety of nightclubs where you can dance til dawn! The new part of the city is modern, lively and cosmopolitan with big name stores you would expect like Chanel, Mango, Marks and Spencer and much, much more...
