Home description
1 bedroom apartment, located in the private courtyard of a building just between the Lithuanian National Philharmonic and a restored monastery complex. It is very quiet and peaceful (except for the church bells ringing in the morning) and it has a separate exit to the enclosed courtyard. You definitely do not need a car and you can explore magnificent Baroque city streets on foot as the apartment is only a few steps away from all the famous Vilnius landmarks. The city tourist information centre can be found in the same building, as well as an art gallery and two lovely restaurants.

The Dzukija region
Vilnius, Lyda and Alytus are the major cities of Dzūkija, the latter considered a historical capital of the region, although it never was a political entity. Lithuania is divided into 5 ethnographic regions, corresponding to the rural lifestyle, songs and traditions, and somewhat corresponding to the dialects of language. To the north of Dzūkija there is Aukštaitija region, and Sudovia (Sūduva or Suvalkija in Lithuanian) is to the west. Large parts of Dzūkija are covered with forests and in the most scarcely populated areas of the region the population density is lower than 4 persons per square kilometer.
The very first Lithuanian handwritten texts from the early 16th century show traits of the Dzūkijan (South Aukštaitijan) dialect. This dialect was once spoken by indigenous people around the capital city of Vilnius and was a basis of first Lithuanian literary traditions.
Vilnius area
In 2009 Vilnius will become European Capital of Culture
Like most medieval towns, Vilnius was developed around its Town Hall. The main artery, Pilies Street, links the royal palace and the Town Hall. Other streets meander through the palaces of feudal lords and landlords, churches, shops and craftsmen's workrooms. Narrow, curved streets and intimate courtyards developed in the radial layout of medieval Vilnius.
The Old Town, the historical centre of Vilnius, is one of the largest in Europe (3.6 km˛). The most valuable historic and cultural sites are concentrated here. The buildings in the old town — there are nearly 1,500 — were built over several centuries, creating a splendid blend of many different architectural styles. Although Vilnius is known as a Baroque city, there are examples of Gothic (e.g. St Anne's Church), Renaissance, and other styles. The main sights of the city are Gediminas Castle and Cathedral Square, symbols of the capital. Their combination is also a gateway to the historic centre of the capital. Owing to its uniqueness, the Old Town of Vilnius was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. In 1995, the first bronze cast of Frank Zappa in the world was installed near the centre of Vilnius with the permission of the government.
