Valmar Gite
£500–£1200 / week
About the home
Situated in the heart of the Lot et Garonne countryside of South West France, half-way between Bordeaux and Toulouse, our holiday accommodation sleeps 4 comfortably (but with extra room for little ones, if required).
Valmar sits proudly on a quiet country lane, in three quarters of an acre of private grounds and enjoys an elevated position that affords views overlooking the Cazeneuve valley. Views that our guests often tell us are 'stunning'. Nearby vineyards, fruit orchards and fields of sunflowers abound. There are two bedrooms, a double and a twin and two bathrooms, one of which is an en-suite.
Valmar Gite is a haven of peace and tranquility and yet only a five minute drive to the nearest small Bastide town of Sainte Livrade Sur Lot. This ancient town has all the facilities to cater for your daily needs, including general stores, restaurants, boulangeries, chemist, tabac and a couple of small supermarkets.
A further ten minutes takes you to the larger Provincial Town of Villeneuve Sur Lot, which, as its name suggests, straddles the river Lot. Being a larger town Villeneuve offers facilities including restaurants, cafes, banks, large supermarkets, theatre, water and other leisure activities and lots more besides.
Guests staying at this luxury self-catering accommodation in the Lot et Garonne benefit from exclusive use of the superb 10m x 5m private swimming pool, which is equipped with sun loungers, parasols, tables and chairs and which basks in the sun all day long. So although Valmar Gite is an ideal base to explore all that the Lot et Garonne has to offer, if you wish, you can just laze around the pool all day, soaking up those rays, with a good book, or perhaps a glass of your favourite tipple ! And as the pool is for your use only, there's no sharing with guests of neighbouring properties

Further details outdoors:
Leaving the house by either the double French doors of the lounge or kitchen, takes you to the large covered terrace. There is a dining suite for “al-fresco” dining, which again accommodates six guests and a large fully equipped barbeque, for less formal occasions.
The Terrace overlooks the pool area, which is approached by descending a flight of easy steps.
Standing on the terrace allows you to really appreciate the fantastic views, beyond the pool, of the gorgeous countryside that surrounds you, the fields of which, in July/August are often full of sunflowers that provide a magnificent display of vibrant yellow. Take a look at the photo gallery to get some kind of idea, but really you need to be there to experience it. All of our guests comment on just how stunning the views are !
There are a few fruit trees in the garden - Figs, cherries and almond and we have two amazing grapevines covering the Terrace, which are heavy with both black and white grapes in July, August and September.
The superb 10m x 5m swimming pool was completed to a high standard in 2007 and is for your own private use for the duration of your stay, no sharing with adjoining properties, or the owners. The pool area is equipped with Sunloungers, parasol, table and chairs.
At the end of the pool "plage" there is a further table and chairs, where you can sit and relax in the evening, with a glass of your favourite tipple in hand. Then at dusk, listen out for the frogs in the distance, calling to each other in symphony, as the sun slowly sinks behind the hills beyond.... Bliss !

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Lot et Garonne region

The “departement” of Lot et Garonne is part of the Aquitaine region and is named after its two principal rivers which merge within its boundaries and it has plenty to offer the visitor. It is still quite a well kept secret and much of its beautiful countryside remains unspoilt. The place to come if you don't like hoards of tourists and 'hustle and bustle'. But please don't make the mistake of thinking there is nothing to do there. The area is littered with no less than 42 historic “Bastide” towns, in addition to many beautiful villages, most of which have regular market days. There are fabulous Chateaux to visit, vineyards, where you can sample the wines of Duras, Marmande and Buzet wines, as well as the more famous 'Bordeaux varieties. You can play golf, go fishing, walking, cycling and there are lots of leisure activities to take part in down by the river.
The Villeneuve Sur Lot / Sainte Livrade Sur Lot area
Just a few places to visit during your stay at Valmar Gite.
Villeneuve-sur-lot
The largest provincial town in the Lot valley and a busy shopping town which retains much of its historic character. Still having largely escaped tourism, it is a Bastide town which began life in the 13th century and a walk through the “Old Town” reveals, a number of old half-timbered buildings still remaining. Has all amenities and facilities at your disposal and is well known for its Organic market on Wednesdays.
Pujols
The view northwards from this ancient village is probably the most breathtaking view in the département of the Lot et Garonne, taking in the Lot plain and the town of Villeneuve-sur-lot, five hundred feet below. The whole village has been sympathetically restored to become known as one of the “Plus Beaux Villages de France”. Wander around its cobbled streets, visit a handful of shops where you may purchase local art, crafts or antiques and then relax in one of a couple of cafés, or perhaps have a more substantial meal in one of the very good restaurants in the centre of the village, where you can relax and soak up the surroundings. Well worth a visit and only a short drive from Valmar.
Château de Bonaguil
An imposing Castle, built largely between the XIIIth and XVIth centuries was originally fortified by Philip III the Bold King of France, to protect the people of the Agenais region. You can join in the regular organised tours, or wander around freely, discovering its many secrets for yourself. Much effort has been made recently to sympathetically restore this Historic Monument, said to be one of the finest fortresses in France.
At 7km North East of Fumel (approx 45km from Valmar) it is also well worth a visit.
Those interested in History can visit the “Musée de préhistoire” (Museum of pre-history). Situated close to Bonaguil at Sauveterre-la-lemance, this small, but fascinating museum, tells the story of the archaeologist, Laurent Coulonges, who in the 1920’s discovered on the Martinet site, a new prehistoric culture, which prehistorians now call “Sauveterrian” (8,000-7000BC). Lots of artefacts on display from these Hunter-Gatherers of the Mesolithic period.
Local Caves
30 million years of slowly dripping water have helped to carve out a number of local caves, where a host of limestone stalagmites and stalagtites can be seen, still slowly growing. visitors can discover much about their formation from the English speaking guided tours. The nearest caves, called "Grottes de Lastournelle" are only about a fifteen minute drive away on the D118 near Villeneuve-sur-lot and are an easy introduction to the underground world of these fascinating formations.
Larger and perhaps more impressive are "Grotttes de Fontirou", found a further fifteen minutes drive away in the same direction. Here you will also find mini-carting and a playground for the children and mini-Golf for all. There is also a snack bar, picnic area and souvenir shop.
For Nature Lovers
The Lot-et-Garonne is a delight for garden-lovers. Stunning examples of French topiary can be found in the three cloister gardens of the church Notre-Dame-de-Marmande and for the masterpiece of classic “jardins à la française”, go to the listed Chateau de Fumel, where clipped yew trees, shady lines of planes and Chestnut trees frame a spectacular view of the Lot valley.
In the rose gardens of Villeneuve-sur-lot you can enjoy the colours and fragrance of 300 varieties from May to September.
Le Temple-sur-lot
About 8km (a 10 minute drive) from Valmar, is the small village of Le Temple-sur-lot, which as it's name suggests, is by the river Lot and has connections with the Knights Templar. In more recent history 'Le Temple' is more famous for its association with Claude Monet.
The “jardin des Nénuphars”, is said to be the oldest and the most prestigious nursery of water lilies in the world, where 200 varieties are classified in the National Collection. The nursery was visted many times by the artist Claude Monet and it was from here that the insipration sprang for his creation "Les Nymphéas".
To find out more about the fascinating nursery visit our own dedicated page to the “jardin des Nénuphars”
There are many other parks and gardens to enjoy in the département of the Lot et Garonne
Monflanquin
Perched on a hill above the river Lede, is the Bastide town of Monflanquin. Here, in the central marketplace, which is surrounded by stone buildings and timber framed properties, some of which date back to the 13th century, you will find several good restaurants, including "The House of the Black Prince”. There is a museum in the town, where you can discover all about Bastides and throughout the summer the town holds a fresh produce and local crafts market every Thursday morning. Feel the atmosphere of a truly french, open-air market, whilst enjoying a coffee or delicious pastry and relax, as you watch the world go by. You can also see the fascinating sight of the house martins returning to their nests, as dusk falls within the ancient vaulted ceilings of the town square. The town also has a very busy schedule of events throughout the year, including guided tours with the village jester (Fripouille)
Within very easy driving distance of Valmar Gite you will find everything from Canoeing, Kayaking, Water Skiing at Fongrave, rowing boats and even hydroplanes (mini hovercrafts, great fun for both adults and children alike) as well as fishing, three golf courses, theme parks for the kids, ten pin bowling, horse riding and as we are close to the best known microlight base in europe, you can even take an aerial view of some of the most beautiful countryside in France.
And if that is too much for you - then just stay by the beautiful pool at Valmar - and relax !

Guestbook for Valmar Gite
Testimonials for Valmar Gite holiday rental in the Lot et Garonne
Valmar Gite is not only luxury self-catering accommodation in the Lot et Garonne, but also our own 'Home from Home' and when we began letting it to other holiday-makers in June 2007, we wanted our guests to also feel that they were staying in their own 'Home from Home'. With this in mind we left a 'guest book' at the Gite and asked our guests to write their comments 'good or bad' in the book at the end of their stay, so that we could respond to their comments and improve the service we offer to future guests.
The following are what our guests have thought of Valmar. They are "verbatim" comments taken either straight from the guest book, or were comments made using our feedback form.
Aug 2011
The views from the house and pool across the valley are breathtaking. The house is well appointed, clean and beautifully furnished. The surrounding area is peaceful and yet you are conveniently located 10 minutes from a number of supermarkets. We had such a wonderful, relaxing time that the day after we returned to the UK we booked to return the following year! Would highly recommend.

Valmar met our expectations and we found the description accurate. The view from the verandah is outstanding !!
The property was well maintained and clean, particularly the upstairs rooms.
The owner communicated very quickly and provided a good map and local info.
We really enjoyed the peace and quiet with a huge sense of space and calm, the only thing you could hear was the local wildlife. It was a real treat to have your own pool, the neighbours were friendly but kept themselves to themselves.
Valmar is a great place to get away from it all, but you do need your own car to get to anywhere.
Aug 2011
This was our 5th visit to Valmar gite and the area is still unspoilt, views still amazing. Visited Chateau De Biron - well worth a visit. Fantastic weather which allowed us to use the great pool and admire the beautiful views over the countryside. If you get up early enough you might be lucky to see some deer in the field below! Good food and wine and came back home thoroughly relaxed. We will definitely be returning next year ! Thank you once again Martin and Christine for letting us share your little piece of paradise !

Sept 2010
We thoroughly enjoyed our two weeks at Valmar in September, what a beautiful spot Martin & Christine have picked for their home. The views and sunsets from the terrace are absolutely breathtaking, especially when we are so used to feeling somewhat enclosed in our own back garden we couldn't believe it! We were very lucky with the weather and had 10 days of sunshine and hot weather which meant we spent the majority of our time lazing by the pool and having BBQs in the evening. On the rainy days we visited the local towns and went wine tasting which was great fun. Thank you to you both for the excellent service from beginning to end, you made our holiday easy and fun right from the moment we made our first enquiry. I would hands down recommend this villa to anyone and will certainly pass on your details to anyone looking at holidaying in south-west France

The area is lovely.
Restaurant La Source was excellent.
Would definitely go back.

This was our third visit to this fantastic gite and will not be our last.very well equipped accomadation with one of the best views in the area.
when you return from a long day sight seeing in this unspoilt region, you can relax by the pool and watch the beautifull sunset while sipping a large glass of local wine.
you must visit the local night markets, great entertainment and a relaxed atmosphere. The meat man who appears at all the markets we visisted is a must try for the steak lovers,he will cook the steak to your liking.

July 2010
High quality accomodation in a superb quiet location.
Had a great family holiday at the Gite. We all loved the pool and the beautiful location on the side of the valley. Small town 5 mins drive away for daily bakery and other needs and big hypermarket only 10 mins drive. You need a car due to the remote location.
James family - Chelmsford - Essex

"A great two weeks with variable weather, hot, then cold, then cloudy, then hot again. Enjoyed the Sunday market at Pujols - great for people watching, with a coffee. Visited Monflanquin & Monpazier, where we had a good value meal at the ‘Bastide‘ restaurant. Also good value canoeing at Casseneuil, but wear shorts and flipflops and be prepared to drag your canoe over the small weirs. Remember to check the pool at Valmar for frogs (the kids loved this !) and other wildlife, including a small praying mantis".

"Superb week at Valmar Gite, with great weather, 25-37degs. Mesmerised by fantastic view across the valley. Great base for mountain biking. Loads of well marked routes around Dolmayrac & beyond. Best days out - Monpazier, Monflanquin and Chateau de Byron. Returning to the UK relaxed and stress-free, with the intention of booking again next year ". (They did !)

June 2010
"Our second Holiday in the Lot and the area is still as peaceful and unspoilt as we remembered. Weather has however been mixed to say the least, with daytime temperatures from 16 - 32. Finally got in pool on Tuesday of 2nd week. As everyone else has said before us, the Gite is 1st class, in a wonderful setting. We have visited most places recommended by previous visitors and particularly enjoyed the visit to ‘Latour Marliac’ water Lilly garden at Le Temple -sur-Lot, with a very enjoyable lunch at La Commanderie restaurant. (However dinner was not as good a couple of days later !). Our best lunch was at Margulan at Agen (52 Rue Richard couer de lion, where we had a quite brilliant meal. Very Fine dining indeed. The market at Sainte Livrade-sur-lot on Friday morning, is also very good ".

"A lovely Gite in a fantastic setting. We‘ve had a great time, despite being unlucky with the weather. Would really recommend the water Lilly garden - ‘Latour Marliac’ at Le Temple-sur-lot for anyone who enjoys beautiful gardens, flowers and frogs. Enjoyed beautiful views from ‘La Source’ restaurant, but vegetarians beware - no options. Great food otherwise, at a good price. The views from Pujols are certainly worth a visit. Thanks for a lovely Holiday in an enviably nice Gite. Best wishes".
Laura & Ben - Edinburgh - UK
September 2009
"We have had a very enjoyable week at Valmar Gite and have been very lucky with the weather. The swimming pool was great for cooling off after trips out. We have stayed in the area before, but visited the medieval castle at Penne d‘ Agenais and the caves at Lastournelle for the first time. Also made a return visit to ‘La source’ restaurant ".

August 2009
"Had a lovely stay at Valmar Gite, great weather most of the time. Very peaceful - great views. We recommend the watersports at ‘Nautilus’ at Castel Moron-sur-lot. The market at Pujols was very enjoyable and the ‘Auchan’ supermarket had everything you could possibly want. Thanks for a great Holiday" .

" We have all enjoyed a lovely and relaxing week at Valmar Gite. We have found the Gite to be very well equipped and a perfect base for the week. We've visited Pujols, Laparade, Monflanquin, where we came upon a fantastic Medieval Fayre. The views from the Terrace are stunning and we have found it hard to leave the pool, especially as temperatures have been 38 degs+ Many thanks for a great Holiday ".
The Jefferis family - Worcestershire - UK
July 2009
" Extremely comfortable and well equipped. We have been very glad of the pool and the BBQ on days when the temperature has topped 37 degrees (98 fahrenheit). We have loved the terrace and the luxury of listening to Wimbledon on the TV whilst sipping our Rosé. A lovely spot and we're leaving very relaxed and very brown. Highlights for us were Chateau Biron and the Dunes at Arcachon".
Daniel and Ruth Male - Newbury - Berks - UK
June 2009
" This was our first visit to France and it sure won't be our last. The gite was a 'Home from Home', very comfortable, we had everything we needed. The views are stunning from the terrace, the prettiest place we've ever stayed in. I'm sure we will be back soon". Gail and Harry Muench - Notts - UK
June 2009
"The weather has been brilliant and the views from Valmar stunning, even during the massive storm that seemed to close the valley. The pool is lovely and a welcome respite from the hot sun, whilst the house is comfortable. In fact several mornings we were surprised by the lateness of the hour that we woke up, even the cockerels along the valley seemed to be in competition. Thanks for a lovely holiday".
Vic and Jane Rust - Kent - UK
May 2009
"What a spectacular view from the terrace - immediately set the pace of the holiday, slow and quiet. Weather has been exceptional- kids have had great fun using the pool every day. Have really enjoyed visiting all the vineyards, not sure if we'll have enough space in the car for all the wine. Valmar itself has been a great place to stay, rustic but comfortable. Neighbours on both sides delightful and we were kept in cherries, which were delicious".
"Thanks to you both for a lovely week".

August 2008
"You cannot put into words just how beautiful the location of this Gite is. It has everything you need to make your stay very comfortable and relaxing. When you sit by the pool you feel like you're in paradise. Local shops are only 5 minutes away and stock everything you need. This was our second visit to Valmar and it won't be our last ! Many thanks Martin & Christine".

July 2008
"We have stayed in dozens of gites, farmhouses, chateaux, cabins and tents all over France and can honestly say that this compares with the best. The house location is excellently placed to take in the breath-taking views and yet it's handy to large supermarkets and towns. I defy anyone not to gasp when they arrive and wonder if they have indeed landed in heaven! Inside the property does not let you down. The rooms are beautifully furnished and clean and much thought has been taken to ensure you have a wonderful stay. I am truly envious of Martin and Christine for having this place.
My family and I spent a memorable week here visiting quaint little villages and just lounging around the magnificent pool. We''ll treasure the photos forever" !!

July 2008
"If you ever want to experience a little slice of heaven, this is it ! A beautifully built and well-equipped gite, in the most stunning of locations, with views to die for from every angle, including the pool. Excellent location for sightseeing around this beautiful area of South West France, or for just complete relaxation in peace and quiet at the gite and pool. Lots of activities for all to do. Fantastic horse-riding hacks with Pascale at Pailloles (25 minute drive from the gite), through woods and the lake, and very cheap. Fun boating activities for all ages at Castelmoron-sur-Lot, also cheap. Great night market overlooking the Lot Valley at Laparade, on Tuesday evenings - different stalls selling hot and cold food to make up your own picnic. Live music and fantastic french atmosphere.
Very good customer service all round, both before and after visit. Travelling to gite from Southampton couldn't have been easier. Would definitely return to this wonderful place".
The Gillman-Wells family - Basingstoke - Hampshire - UK
June 2008
"Gite comfortable, area pretty. Weather hot & sunny and sunsets to die for. All in all a pretty relaxing fortnight. An area not visited by us before on our many trips to France but we were well impressed.
Monpazier was our favourite place, beautiful and unspoilt. Sarlat was certainly worth a return visit (after 22 years) and the scenery along the Dordogne remains beautiful. We also loved the water lily garden in Le Temple-sur-Lot.
A place that fulfilled all our holiday needs - Thank You". Nigel & Kay Garnett - Carnforth - Lancashire - UK
June 2008

"A truly delightful property with stunning views, Valmar Gite is in the perfect location for exploring the local area, or for a relaxing break where you don't venture much further from the pool. September 2007
"No matter how many pictures you take of this stunning property and beautiful views, they can never justify just how truly spectacular they really are. It's the perfect location for a relaxing "chilled out" week or equally as good for exploring this lovely region of France! We will be returning in the near future without doubt. Many thanks to Martin and Christine for a wonderful holiday in every way".
Stef and Rachel - Mansfield - Notts - UK
August 2007
"We have had a great holiday here at Valmar - the location is superb with breathtaking sunsets. Both our boys have spent hours in the pool which has been very enjoyable. We'd recommend a visit to the Bastide towns of Monpazier and Monflanquin, both of which are really quaint. Agen, Bergerac and Arcachon are all worth a visit too. We visited the chateau de Bonaguil and the Chateau de Byron, which are also well worth the drive. All in all a great holiday and a great Gite".
The Lewis family - Leigh-On-Sea - Essex - UK
August 2007
"We have enjoyed our stay at Valmar. Such a beautiful house with breathtaking views. We enjoyed our visit to Pujols, especially the evening market on Wednesday, live entertainment and good food. We will be returning".

4th August 2007
"We had a beautiful, peaceful stay here. We have particularly enjoyed canoeing on the River Lot at Cassenuil and Villeneuve. It is very calm, with only a gentle current and felt safe for us and our two young children. We had fabulous meals at Lou Calel and Le Toque blanche, in Pujols. Lovely peaceful villa with superb views over the valley, convenient access to three supermarkets and the local town of Sainte Livrade-sur-lot and convenient for the river Lot. Kids loved the pool. Very considerate and thoughtful English owners. Two weeks wasn't enough".
The Raca family - Edgbaston - Bimingham - UK
July 2007
"Valmar Gite was a great base for touring around the South West of France. Locally we enjoyed the Saturday morning market at Villenueve-sur-Lot, lunch at Monflanquin, walks around Essigeac and most of all the evening market at Pujols on Wednesdays (6-11.30pm). As you can imagine we weren't in the gite much, but when we were, it had everything that we needed. Locally we would also recommend the Lou Gaillot vineyard. The tour only takes 20 minutes and the wine is reasonably priced. The Chateau de Bonaguil is also worth a visit, bring a picnic ! Thanks for the memories Valmar Gite and good luck Martin and Christine".
The Duffy family - Lisburn - Northern Ireland
