The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Lot et Garonne region
There are many interesting places to see in this unspoilt area, The nearby village of Pujols is a fortified village, once the stronghold of heretics and destroyed during the war with the Albigensians (inhabitants from the area around Albi in the South East) and then subsequently rebuilt in the 15th Century.
Still partly surrounded by the original enclosing walls it is well worth the visit for breathtaking views and now has several very nice restaurants. Larger shops are at the town of Villenueve sur Lot, 2kms further on , and
stands on the banks of the Lot river and founded in 1264, it still has many small streets and half-timbered buildings in the shopping pedestrian area and market square.
The Villeneuve Sur Lot area
The town of Villeneuve-sur-Lot is set on the banks of the Lot river and founded in 1264, it has many small streets and half-timbered buildings in the shopping pedestrian area and market square. There is a good Golf course to the north near Cancon.
Tournon d'Agenais is a pretty Royal Bastide village from 1271 and on the route of St Jaques de Compostella with a lovely square and belfry tower superb views, restaurants, Alimentation, Butcher and Boulanger. Friday evening market in the summer.
Fumel, on the banks of the Lot river, has developed into a more commercial town with good shops and supermarkets. Nearby is the fascinating Chateau at Bonaguil, which is one of the finest examples of 15 th Century architecture. There are concerts, restaurant and a cafe.
The Lot Valley in South West France is is an excellent area to take a holiday, with lots to do for all ages!
Well signposted walks, cycling, riding, fishing (daily and weekly licences readily available), tennis, golfing, canoeing and swimming are all widely available and popular in the region. There are many local Leisure lakes these are at Montaigu-de-Quercy, Montcuq, Beauville .
The local population is very friendly and tourists and foreign residents are made extremely welcome – all contributing to a calm leisurely life-style.
Locally there is golf, horse riding, fishing in lakes or river. In the surrounding area, there are caves of Fontirou and Lastourelle

BY ROAD
The superb French Autoroute (Motorway) system makes driving here as easy as you could hope for. The main Motorways to this region are the A10 (from the north to Bordeaux), the A20 (from Paris via the A10, A71) to Toulouse and the A62 (from Toulouse to Bordeaux). The journey from Calais to Bordeaux is about 560 to 590 miles and should take around 8 hours. We are about 580 miles from Calais/Le Havre and 430 miles from St Malo. Cherbourg extends the drive by 2 or 3 hours. You can avoid the Peripherique at Paris by taking (from Charles de Gaulle Airport) the A 86 & A (& N) 186 and the A10 direction Bordeaux. The A 10 divides at Orleans where we recommend taking the A 71 (direction Vierzon and Toulouse) and then the A 20 to North or South Cahors.

Eurostar runs via the Channel Tunnel between London and Paris (Gare de Nord) in 3 hours. Paris is linked to the high speed rail network (TGV). Departures for Aquitaine are from Gare Montparnasse station. Taking the train from London to Lille avoids the need to change stations in Paris. There are TGV connections to Bordeaux and Toulouse as well as to Agen, which is the nearest station to our properties.

The directions were not even close we had to stop in Pujol to ask for help at the tourist office as we were uable to locate the property. They emailed the office in Villeneuve sur Lot who gave us new and concise directions. The property was not claerly marked from the main road and was down a very steep and curved's' bend style dirt track. the house itself was fine but not clean as there where rodent droppings in and around the furniture and fittings. we had to sweep up droppings every morning. We made a formal complaint and were told that the 'Loirs'(small chipmunk/squirrel type animals) were part of the areas charm. The pool was the best bit of the property and the rural location if you like nature and getting away from it all. The bathroom did smell but that was because it was a setic tank system and the more water washed down the less smell there was. But the constant nighly activity of the rodents meant we got very little sleep. Owls, bats, kestrels, hawks and a snake added to the excitement of a back to nature retreat. The local area has lots to see and do but the rodent spoilt our stay at the house. Response: We are always delighted to hear how much tenants enjoy their holiday in properties let through Kingfisher Holidays. In the above case, we had expected a mixed reaction as we and the managers of the property concerned had several opportunities to discuss things throughout this tenant's stay. After talking to them on most days and helping by supplying different pillows, a DVD player and offering some extra wine because the Loir (local wildlife door mice with bushy tails) chose to share the holiday, we knew that they might not quite appreciate the extra work we and the managers had to do in order to help in any way we could. Unfortunately wildlife is inevitable and poison can only be used after the letting season to avoid risk to tenants and their children. We think we should however react to some of their criticism: The tenant misread the directions, which were from a nearby village of PUJOLS rather than Villeneuve-sur-Lot. Once one is on the lane leading to the property (as signposted from the main road), it is difficult to go into considerable detail such as sharp corners since no alternative roads exist. We understand that large cars might need to negotiate these corners though we have done so ourselves without difficulty – we do though intend to take their advice (for which we are grateful) and add further detail in future. We are glad these tenants found the property very pleasant though disappointed to hear that the bathroom had a smell. Septic tanks are normal with country properties and proper chemicals are needed regularly. If the managers allowed this to continue, we apologise on behalf of the owners. It is true that the owners also own a second house on the site but we do make it clear that the owners are never there when the letting cottage is let so we do not understand any implied criticism about this. However we always prefer tenants to find a property (or view) better than they expected and are glad they enjoyed the privacy and view, the walks, wildlife and early morning sunshine. It is true that the sun sets behind the cottage but in high summer this is quite late and has never caused any other tenants to complain. Certainly, we see it as crucial that tenants are never met with negative surprises and we will certainly point out to future tenants any of the points raised here that we feel might otherwise seem negative to future tenants. This includes the length of time the pool pump is on especially after say 6pm. This could easily have been improved had the tenants asked the house manager though we doubt if they or indeed any other tenants would choose to disturb the peace at night! We are surprised that these tenants found the property 'slightly overpriced' especially when taking into account everything we and the managers did to help make their holiday more comfortable including refunding some rent. Our terms and conditions are clear in respect of wildlife but we chose, on an ex gratia basis, to recognize the nuisance caused by the Loir! |

The directions to the property were incorrect, the turn off from the main road was much further than indicated from Villeneuve. The property could have been better sign posted and an indication that there were some hair pin bends on the driveway to negotiate on steep slopes down to the property. A small car helps here! otherwise some 3 or 4 point turns on some corners close to steep slopes. The property was very pleasant, 2 bedrooms up stairs and living room and kitchen downstairs. The bathroom upstairs had a bad smell from day 1, and never really seemed to go away, though it did diminish over a few days after more water passing through the drains. There was a great deal of noise associated with Loir (small tree rats/ squirrels) running around, scratching and fighting within the roof. Ear plugs recommended! We subsequently learnt that they would be putting poison down to get rid of them. Check that this has been done before you go! The owners house was close by which overlooked the swimming pool, but they were not present and therefore the whole area was very private, there were no houses within view, except in the distance across the valley. The view is not captured in the advertised photos, the view is much better, and had a really good WOW factor. The fields around were good for walking and we saw deer several times in the garden as well as eagles and numerous other wild birds. The house and garden faced east and therefore was very pleasant in the early morning. However there was no evening sunshine, which we prefer to sit and watch, with a glass of wine! The supermarket for good quality food is only 15 minutes away, north of Villeneve sur lot, and we enjoyed the surrounding villages and countryside. We were surprised that the swimming pool pump was on from 8.00am to 8.00pm. Considering this was such a peaceful property it was a shame that we could not turn the pump off ourselves sometimes, even for an hour. Running the pump at night would have been better. The property was slightly over priced. Liked most, the views and peaceful area, liked least, the noisy loir at night and the swimming pool pump. |
