The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

The sunny Languedoc Roussillon region of the Midi in South-West France is divided into different departments: Aude, Corbières, Hérault, Gard & Pyrenées Orientales, all with different characteristics.
The Minervois, in the Aude, ( roughly in the middle) is a tranquil wine growing area ( Carcassonne is the capital ) with lazy, typically French little medieval villages that are also rich in architecture and history. You really feel like you've stepped back in time...

The Villeneuve Minervois area
The friendly & charming village has all amenities , with the boulangerie just next door - handy for those fresh croissants for breakfast in the courtyard!
Around the village there are a number of sights to see, e.g: Cathar castles, splendid grottos & neolithic dolmen...
In the summer there are free weekly concerts ( with an optional répas) and a chance to try the local wines - very jolly occasions!
On Bastille Day, nearby Carcassonne performs the spectacular Son et Lumiére over the Cité with one of the most famous firework displays in Europe. And Carcassonne hosts the annual well known summer Festival, with concerts in the Cité and in the squares and parks dotted around the town.
There are beautifully landscaped lakes around with all amenities, and the village Tourist Office can provide you with suggestions and information. Lots of maps and information can also be found in the games room of the house.

Reviews

Location was excellent and the kitchen well equipped. Has the the appearance of a well maintained home from home. Nice welcome of wine, cheese and bread on our arrival. We visited the following: (1) 4 Castles of Latours walk - excellent (2) Windmill in VM - very good (3) Paper mill - very good (4) Lac de jourres - swimming 23 degress celcius (5) Homps - canal boat trip - very enjoyable (6) Gouffre de Cabprestime - very good / excellent (7) Grotte - very good (8) Minerve - previous week - excellent (9) Caunes - Minervois (abbey) - disappointing (10) Carcassonne - good but crazily touristy. Only negatives for us were the weather. It was too warm > 35C in August but we eventually got some sleep. Response: Delighted that our holiday home met all your expectations, and that our suggested places to visit were pleasing We recommend that in the height of summer the best time to visit the medieval cité of Carcassonne is first thing in the morning - when one can get a feel of the history and before the crowds arrive... |
