Occupying almost the entire top floor of an old palace, this magnificent open-plan penthouse / loft apartment is completely unique. It is in the heart of the charming and unspoilt old town of Villefranche-sur-Mer, yet it is quiet, extremely spacious, and exudes luxury. Perfect for four people or a couple, but can if necessary accommodate up to six + a baby, by arrangement with the owners.
The large terrace offers a stunning view of what's renowned as one of the most beautiful bays in the entire Mediterranean, while inside the apartment offers the ultimate in comfort. An added bonus is that very few people know the loft even exists. It is invisible from below or above; an idyllic hideaway. Yet is is only moments from the beach, all the great local walks & scenery, and of course the luxury yachts.

|Further details indoors|
Large picture windows (with shutters) allow the beautiful and invigorating Mediterranean light to flood into the loft-style interior, with its luxury fittings; the fully-equipped Italian designed kitchen, the 'Moroccan' area, the cosy seating and dining areas and the atmospheric bedrooms, all set off by local and Mediterranean art and cooled or heated by an efficient air conditioning system.
For added entertainment there is a large Plasma screen, with English speaking satellite TV (BBC & ITV footprint just reduced to the French Riviera; we are working on that) and a DVD player.
The apartment is best suited for 4 guests. However, since there are two double beds in the large 2nd bedroom, it can accommodate 2 more if desired; possibly children. A screen (provided) can be placed between the 2 beds in this room if desired.
|Further details outdoors|
The terrace measures about 40 square metres (unusually large for the sea front). A table and 4 chairs (2 more can be brought from inside) with sun shade are perfect for al fresco dining, while a raised sun-deck area can accommodate two comfortable chairs or two sun-loungers, as well as another sun shade - a perfect place to watch what's going on in the bay! There is also a small Mediterranean garden (Bougainvillea, Orange Tree, Jasmine, Birds of Paradise etc).
CAUTION. It is advised that children are kept under supervision when on the terrace.
PARKING: Five car parking spaces are shared with other residents of the building, on a first-come, first-served basis - right outside the building. However, we cannot guarantee one of those spaces will be available. Parking is severely restricted in the old town, although we can pass on advice about the best alternative free parking options.
The French Riviera - Cote d'Azur region
They say that you can swim in the Mediterranean in the morning and ski in the Alps the same afternoon. I've never tried it but it doesn't take long to drive into the mountains, so I'm sure it's possible. Certainly Villefranche Bay is beautiful all year round; people even swim in the Med on New Year's Day.
Villefranche is perfectly situated for the whole of the Riviera. You can take the train to Cannes or Monaco (only about 8 miles away), or over the nearby border into Italy (at Ventimiglia). Nice is a short distance away, and since the tramway has recently been completed it's got a lot to offer; from the old town to the museums and art galleries; from the restaurants to the kids' attractions. The Matisse museum is well worth a visit; he's buried nearby. Up in the hills there are some wonderful old perched hill villages; some of them feel as if they're rooted in a previous century. There's also St Paul de Vence (wonderful ambiance and craft galleries), Grasse (home of perfume), and if you have a car then it's not too far to St Tropez, Avignon, and Provence. In the other direction it's only a 3 hour drive to Milan and the Italian lakes.
Villefranche-sur-Mer is divided into two distinctly different areas: The Old Town, and the 'Col de Villefranche' - the hill behind the town. The Old Town is a real jewel, with its medieval citadel and its historic, atmospheric streets lined with shops, restaurants and cafes: all within easy reach of this property. The Col de Villefranche is a busride, a drive or a fairly long walk away from the Old Town.
There's something for everyone around Villefranche. In the Old Town there's a lot of history, and loads of restaurants, cafes and gift shops, as well as food shops, bakers, butchers etc. It can take several days just to explore the immediate vicinity; clambering over the citadel, and the fort at Mont Alban that overlooks it; walking around the coast in both directions, exploring the nearby towns of St Jean Cap Ferrat and Beaulieu etc.
Many famous artists have visited Villefranche and painted here; you will see Jean Cocteau's church on the seafront; he painted the inside for the local fishermen, and it's quite a sight. Elsewhere the local council has erected a number of paintings (or at least, copies) showing various street scenes and views. The town has Italian connections (it used to be part of Italy), Russian connections (the Russians used to fuel their Mediterranean fleet here), American connections (a big contingent of American forces were here for many years, and there are still regular visits by US warships).
Many people who drive through Villefranche fail to realise what a jewel the place is. The main road goes through the top of the town, and you have to know where you're going to reach the historic sea front centre. Once you're there, most people agree it's one of the most spectacular resorts in the Mediterranean.

"Stunning apartment in beautiful village"
My husband and I stayed here for 5 days in May 2013 with our 18month old boy. The apartment is very well appointed and beautifully furnished. Very spacious with a wonderful big terrace overlooking the lovely bay of Villefranche. We had a very warm welcome from the property manager and were impressed with the quality of the linens / towels and really appreciated the extra touches such as flowers on arrival, starter kit of milk / dustbin bags etc. All in all highly recommended.

Centrally located in the pretty fishing port of Villefranche, the Loft occupies a magnificent position overlooking the beautiful harbour and outwards towards Cap Ferrat. It is difficult to imagine a more idyllic spot. The views from the expansive balcony are simply stunning. From your position high above the hustle and bustle of unspoilt Villefranche, life takes on a more leisurely pace as you gaze out to sea , admire the yachts in the harbour below and the comings and goings of the luxury cruise liners. Indeed lazing on your balcony it feels a lot like you're actually on the water in your own luxury yacht. We cannot speak highly enough of the quality of service we received. Kate, the owner, could not have been more helpful. From our initial enquiry right through to our return to the UK, Kate kept in touch. Her efficient, courteous and helpful manner ensured that we had one of the most stress free breaks anyone could hope for. She arranged for transfers to and from the airport and our welcoming pack, which included a bottle of wine was a lovely gesture. Thank you Kate!! We cannot speak highly enough of The Loft. If it has a downside it is that it is so difficult to leave it. You really have to force yourself to go anywhere. We will be back!!!!

"Wonderful, relaxing holiday."
From the moment you enter this top floor apartment you get the 'wow factor'. The open plan living/dining area is tastefully furnished and includes many luxuries that you would not usually expect in a holiday let. The kitchen is superb and the master bedroom and en-suite as good as any 5 star hotel. The lovely terrace is where we spent most of our time, eating, drinking and relaxing. The beach can get busy, but you can just return to the loft where the noise is minimal & the views are fantastic. Villefranche itself is a beautiful town with plenty of bars & restaurants suiting every taste. We will definately return, we spent so much time relaxing in the apartment that we didn't do much exploring.

My husband and I stayed at The Loft with friends visiting from overseas. From the instant I emailed the owners the entire experience was a dream including the on-ground agent who was extremely friendly and helpful. The Loft is perfectly located right on the water and amongst local restaurants. Inside is modern and spacious added with the penthouse views, it is simply divine. Not only did The Loft live up to our expectations, Villefranche-sur-Mur is also the perfect location to either relax and make the most of the incredible views but also the perfect base to explore the region more broadly. With the train station only a few hundred metres away, we left the car parked for our entire stay making the most of such convenience. We will definitely be back!

"Amazing views and location second to none!"
We stayed int the loft for 4 days and had an incredible time! It is 2 mins walk for your early morning swim (a must on holidays!) It is very central and the views are quite amazing! It is one of the nicest apartments we ever stayed in in France. Will definitely go back there ... soon!

"Quiet, comfortable loft with an exceptional view on the bay."
We did loved Villefranche, the loft and his location. It is perfect for quiet vacation and is located a place were it is very easy to travel around if you don't have a car. The train station is at 3 minutes walking and 30 minutes later you can spend the day on the italian riviera. You also can visit many cities on the french riviera . If the weather is warm, the beach is nearby the loft. The loft is very comfortable and sunny. We spent hours on the superb terrace, reading or just enjoying ! It is a fantastic place to be !

In our opinion the reviews of #502 Palais on Trip Advisor are understated. We are fairly fussy 5 star type travelers and while we did not expect an over the top luxury apartment, #502 was nevertheless perfect in its simplicity. Both bathrooms are well appointed with sage glass tile, high ceilings and a skylight throughout the main area, a low one at the Moroccan end to give it a cozy feel, a modern kitchen with all one needs to cook if so inclined and a terrace with a view that no pictures on the internet could do justice. Dealing with one of the owners, Kate, was simply seamless and both she and her local representative, Molly, gave us great tips on where to go, what to eat and advice on the #81 bus. We had never taken buses anywhere but this was fabulous! Molly emphasized a visit to the Ephrussi de Rothschild, a wonderful "palace" which is a must and of course the #81 takes you right there. Villefranche itself is a charming town with a multitude of excellent restaurants and centrally located to visit the neighboring towns on the train or the bus. We will be back for a much longer stay than 4 days. And, an added bonus was meeting Molly's husband, Chris who is a driver and took us to Nice to pick up our rental car, stayed with us the whole time, showed my husband how to use the equipment, loaded our luggage, etc.

We stayed in the Palais de la Marine recently and it was one of the best holidays we've ever had. From the moment we walked in we didn't want to leave! The loft apartment, on the edges of the Mediterranean in Villefranche, has one of the most stunning views in the world, with its sweeping views across the bay to Cap Ferrat and its stunning sunsets. It will remain our ideal holiday space, with its long sunny balcony, its spacious free flowing living and dining areas, and well equipped modern kitchen, and the large airy bedrooms. All add up to making it a truly stunning place to stay. We were there in winter, and it was still warm enough to swim and lie on the beach. The owners have furnished it with care and understated style, and they provide a detailed guide to the markets and restaurants, and their local representative was really warm and welcoming. Everything about it was easy, with its wifi Internet connection, comfortable couches, reliable heating and large TV. The beds are comfortable with quality linen, the two bathrooms are modern and gleaming, and even the ensuite has a stunning view. The apartment has parking, and is easily accessed from the beach road, or by the back door which leads straight into the narrow winding lanes of the old Medieval town, where every corner is another photograph, and where you can smell the bread baking in the early morning. It's a stone's throw from any one of the many restaurants, and the local markets, where you can buy cheese and fruit and a variety of all those delicious things that France is renowned for. The local transport is excellent, and you can catch the train to Italy for lunch, or a one Euro bus ride to Nice or anywhere along the coast. It was a perfect base to explore the surrounding areas, and quite simply a perfect place to stay. We really couldn't recommend it highly enough, and definitely want to go back again!

"Modern, spacious, light-filled, comfortable, vielle ville aerie overlooking the rade de Villefranche"
This penthouse apartment, with its large terrace, occupies almost the entire top of the Palais de la Marine (originally the Palace of the Dukes of Savoy). It is open to the terrace overlooking the rade de Villefranche via large sliding glass doors on the waterside, with lush Mediterranean greenery and the arched stone walls of an elaborate villa visible through the skylights on the landside. The most remakable aspects of the furnishings are a well-equipped stainless steel countertopped food prep area and the extensively tiled baths and WCs. First-rate appliances in good working order in the open kitchen include a commodious refrigerator and separate freezer, conventional/convection oven, and microwave/toaster oven set into the cabinets, as well as a full size dishwasher and washing machine. There is a large flat-screen plasma television wall-mounted in the cozy sitting area at the opposite end of the main room from the master bedroom and bath with British Sky-TV cable. The WiFi is WEP-protected and easy to set up and the Netgear router provides a strong signal throughout the apartment and onto the terrace. The owners thoughtfully provided a bottle of wine and vases of fresh cut flowers (lilies and yellow tulips) and the key handover and orientation was conveniently and cordially handled by the local manager--an American who settled in Nice over a decade ago. The building is secured by a digicode and can be entered from the waterside or from the extension of the rue Poilu on the back (convenient for trips to the Petit Casino or to the train station). There is an elevator that stops 1 floor down, but the remaining stairway is wide, well-lighted, and not particularly steep. The furnished linens were of excellent quailty and in good condition and drying racks for laundry and umbrellas for the terrace were stowed in a closet. We spent a very pleasant first week of December there, alternating somewhat between eating at Villefranche restaurants and preparing meals "chez nous". Good supply of glassware, dishes, utensils, and good quality knives.
