La Belle Epoque
About the home
Enjoy the charm of a beautiful French Riviera apartment situated on an elevated position in the pretty medieval town of Villefranche-Sur-Mer. This elegant and well-appointed apartment offers the rare combination of a superb sea-view terrace with the facilities and charm of living in an old-world town. As soon as you enter the apartment, the beautiful Bay of Villefranche opens up before you . You will be enchanted watching the changing colours of the Mediterranean against the backdrop of Cap Ferrat, the haphazard pattern of the ''Provencal'' terracotta roofs, the arrivals and departures of the cruise ships and constant activity of small craft in the Bay.
This is one of five exclusive apartments in a recent renovation of Villa St Remi on Ave. Gallieni which is close to shops / restaurants / bus stop / car park / Institut de Francaise. It is a ten minute walk to the safe and sandy beach.
It is on the first floor. The entrance-hall and stairs are bright, wide and gradual. The lounge opens onto the spacious terrace commanding 180 degree views of the renowned Bay, looking over the terracotta roofs of the medieval town, towards the sandy beaches and the Mediterranean beyond.
This quality apartment is redecorated and furnished with comfortable furniture in 'La Belle Époque' style with a modern all electric kitchen. It is equipped with air conditioning and electric heating.
Imagine the romance of dining al fresco or sipping an aperitif watching the twinkle of the distant villas on Cap Ferrat. Relax on the glorious beach while children build sand castles, or explore the rocks in the expectation of catching that elusive fish. And what about the hill walking in the foothills of the Alps or along the many and varied costal paths? It is an ideal base for a romantic holiday with day trips to Nice for shopping and its museums, Monaco for its glitz and Casino, Ventimiglia in Italy for its market, and Paul de Vence for its art.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT
The apartment is a five minute walk from the bus stops ''Barmasa'' or ''l'Octroi'' which is the principle stop in the village. We never hire a car when in Villefranche. We use public transport, both bus and rail, which are frequent and unbelievably cheap. We use the bus to go everywhere and it is great value at 1Eur for a ten km zone around Nice. The 1€ ticket can be used for connecting trips (including the city tram) within 74 minutes of first validation. For longer trips to Cannes or Antibes to the west, or Monaco or Ventimiglia in Italy to the east we use the train. We make daily excursions in both directions along the coast and up into the mountains also, as we are enthuastic hill walkers.
BEACH
The south facing sandy beach which is 1 km long, is very safe and clean. It is 500m from the apartment , a walk of ten minutes through the pedestrianised streets of the Old Town and not crossing any busy thoroughfares. It is supervised by life guards during the Summer season. Snorkling and sub aqua diving is very popular and equipment can be hired or purchased in Villefranche.

**A municipal tennis court which is located 300m from the apartment which can be used by guests.
**A municipal kiddies playground which is 500m from the apartment. It is very well equiped and maintained.
**The Citadel, a Savoy Fort, is now an art museum and open air cinema in summer.
**Villa Rothschild on Cap Ferat is well worth a visit for its magnificant gardens, musical fountains and excellent
cafe. It is a pleasant 30 minute walk from the apartment or a 10 minute bus trip,(bus 81)
**Flea Market every Sunday by the harbor.
**Local produce market every Saturday
**Monaco which is a 15 minute train / bus ride is always a very popular day trip.
**Nice for shopping, art museums and the Old Town
**Ventimiglia over the border in Italy has a very large market on Fridays and is an hours journey by train from Villefranche.

The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region

Villefranche lies in the heart of the French Riviera about 8 Km. east of Nice. Imagine an old medieval fishing village with tiny narrow alleyways and steps winding steeply down to the quayside. Here the pace of life has slowed down accordingly – people have time to sit in cafes and restaurants, enjoying the superb French cuisine and the wonderful “old fishing village” atmosphere. Others stroll along the promenade, maybe heading for the crescent shaped beach further along the Bay. This is Villefranche, nestling at the foot of the hills where the Alps finally meet up with the Mediterranean.
The attractive old town of Villefranche hasn’t changed much over the centuries but in spite of this it is a real place where people live and work with all modern amenities while managing to preserve a definite village atmosphere. The Boulangerie or Greengrocer is a great meeting place every morning where locals joke and discuss their problems. Fresh fish caught by the local fishermen can be bought on the quayside and the clink of the boules on a lazy summer afternoon gives a distinctive French flavour to the village atmosphere.
Families love the sandy beach because it’s so safe for children and both young and old can be seen trying their luck fishing off the rocks. For the more activity minded there is scuba diving and a diving school, or you can just hire a boat and snorkel along the Cap Ferrat promentary. There is public tennis courts close to the apartment and golf at La Turbie, which is inland from Monaco and a twenty-minute drive away. Not forgetting walking some of the wonderful way marked trails in the hills that form the backdrop to Villefranche or along the many coastal routes.
The 'Alps Maritimes' create a wall of mountains which shelters the coastline from the cold north winds in winter and allows the Cote d'Azur east of Nice enjoy a wonderful climate – mild sunny winters and the breeze from the sea in summer ensures that it doesn’t get unbearably hot. Consequently, this area is a gardener's paradise with it’s a unique microclimate where you will find many exotic plants and shrubs. No wonder that the Victorian aristocrats and artists loved it. They flocked to this area for its gentle climate and stunning scenery that the area has to offer.
The Villefranche Sur Mer / Villefranche Old Town area
Historically Villefranche developed as an important duty-free port in the 14th century and latter on in 18th century it became a strategic military base for the House of Savoy. The Duke of Savoy’s Citadel is still very much intact, housing not only the Hotel de Ville but also museums of sculptures by Volti and paintings by Jean Cocteau. In summer it is the venue for an open-air cinema. Cocteau also redecorated the Chapelle St Pierre with frescoes as a gift to the fishing community who used to story their nets there.
Within walking distance of Villefranche, the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild and the Villa Kerylos can be visited – the former being famous for its splendid gardens, musical fountains, view over the Bay of Villefranche and a great place for afternoon tea. The latter being a reproduction of a 5th century BC Grecian villa – a must for those interested in Classical Greece.
Many of the magnificent villas from the Victorian era survive and some now house important museums and art galleries. For example, Matisse who lived in Nice, left the city a priceless collection of his works and these are displayed in the Matisse museum – an exquisite late 17th century Genoese villa. There is the Renoir museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer just west of Nice.

We spent a wonderful week at La Belle Epoque. Booking the apartment could not have been easier and Eamon, the owner, provided us with extensive and practical information about facilities and location, as well as transport, restaurants and local shops, all of which were within easy walking distance. Transfer from the airport and handover arrangements were made by Sue, the apartment manager, for whom nothing was too much trouble. The apartment is very well furnished in a traditional and elegant French style and the 'piece de resistance' is the large terrace with beautiful views of the bay towards St-Jean-Cap-ferrat. In summary, an excellent apartment, central location and superb views. What more could one ask for a relaxing holiday. Michael Bailey Response: We are delighted that the Baileys enjoyed their September stay in our "la Belle Epoque" apartment on the Cote dAzur. Both Sue, our local manager and ourselves endeavour to ensure that our guests have an enjoyable holiday and find the facilities as described on our web site. Eamon and Eamon |

this apartment is a gem. We were met on arrival by the manager, shown the apartment, given tips and information about Villefranche and made welcome with flowers and a bottle of wine. The apartment was spotless, well equipped and the spectacular views from every window were just as shown in the listing. The pictures are accurate, you get what you see. The kitchen has everything needed for holiday cooking, there are plenty of towels and linens including beach towels and equipment, although the time of year we were there was not beach weather. The balcony is big with comfortable furniture and the amazing view to sit and take in with a glass of wine after a day of exploring. The only difficulty we had was a spotty wifi connection but eventually that cleared up so we were able to connect with family. When we had to call the manager, she was usually there within 15 minutes. The location is perfect, just off the main road but far enough so that noise is not a concern, yet close enough to the main road for an easy walk to shops and transportation. We explored the village thoroughly, got to know the local butcher, boulangeries, restaurants, etc., and were made welcome by all. It was easy to go into Nice, Monaco, Menton and other villages by bus or train. We stayed a month and have every intention of doing the same again next year. One hint, do not rent a car! The public transportation is so good, frequent and reliable that we only used our rental car three times in a month. Lesson learned! Response: We are delighted that this North American couple enjoyed their months stay at ''La Belle Epoque'' and that they found the photos and description to be accurate. Eamon & Eileen |

Winter Break 2011 Phil Markham, Ontario, Canada Review Submitted: April 22, 2011 Date of Stay: March 2011 My wife and I stayed two weeks at La Belle Epoque in the Old Town of Villefranche-sur-mer from March 26 - April 9, 2011. Partly to escape the cold and snow of a Canadian winter, but also to immerse ourselves into the local French culture. I had spent the previous three months improving my French and this was the opportunity to practice it "live". We were met as arranged at Nice airport by the local taxi service, and by Vivi at the apartment. Our first impression was one of amazement when we looked at the roof top view from the balcony, and the space, appointment and facilities of the apartment - especially the natural light and the Mediterranean decor - everything that was advertised on the Web site. As other clients have mentioned, the apartment's location is perfect for local stores and restaurants, and of course the amazing public transit system (nothing comparable in North America!) During our stay we did occasionally eat-in - the local butcher, baker and green-grocer on Rue d'Eglise always willing to accommodate my French - our favourite restaurant was La Belle Epoque located just below the apartment, plus the numerous cafe and restaurants for our morning cafe au lait. The weather during our two week stay was amazing - sunshine everyday - 22C on average. Our favourite places to visit included the fantastic Ville & Jardins Ephrussi de Rothchild - the 81 bus drops you at the entrance - numerous trips to Nice and a day spent in Grasse. On a more mundane level, we appreciated the apartment's washing machine, as we still had additional travel plans before heading for home. Would we recommend La Belle Epoque to others - ABSOLUTELY Philip and Jean , Markham, ON Recommended for: Age 55+, Tourists without a Car, Sightseeing, Romantic Getaway |

I just wanted to thank you again for letting us rent your lovely apartment in Villefranche. We fell in love with the town and area. Your flat is in the perfect location with gorgeous views. My husband and I enjoyed sitting outside on the terrace after we put our sons to sleep each night. The binoculars are a great idea-it was fun to look at some of the houses on the hills and down into the harbor.
We would go back in a heartbeat. Thank you again for your hospitality. We really enjoyed the wine and the flowers, too.

"Perfect Two Weeks"
"We've just spent two weeks in the apartment which have been absolutly perfect. It's the third time we've rented this accommodation which is exactly as described on the website.
We arrived by taxi from Nice airport which was arranged by Sue, the apartment manager. The trip was only around 20 mins and cost 50 euro which is a lot cheaper than just getting a taxi at the rank. We were met at the apartment by Sue who is very welcoming and has lots of information about what there is to do in Villefranche and the surrounding area as well as some practical advise about buses, trains, restaraunts etc.
The apartment itself is spacious and airy, with high ceilings and three full hight sets of french windows complete with shutters that open out on to the balcony which must have one of the best views on the Riviera. You look over the rooftops of Villefranche-sur-mer across the bay to Cap Ferrat, day or night we found it amazing. We spent hours on the balcony reading and drinking the local rose wine, it really is the perfect place to relax.
Villefranche is great to walk around with enough local food shops to provide whatever you need. There is a small food market on Saturday morning near the tourist office which has local produce, meats, cheeses and fish. We found that the trains and buses were the best way to get around. The bus stop is only around 300m from the apartment with buses to Nice or Monaco every 20 mins.(cost 1 euro!) The train station must be one of the most scenic in the world and is ten minutes walk, with trains to Italy or Cannes. Went to Ventimilgia over the border in Italy on the train on a Friday where there is a huge market and many traditional Italian trattorias serving fantastic food.
There is so much to see and do whether its the hustle and bustle of Nice or Cannes or the beauty of villages like Eze and St Paul de Vence , This apartment in Villefranche provides an ideal base for a superb holiday in the South of France its in a great location has lots of charm and is furnished to a high standard. Next year will be the fourth time we have returned and it probably not be our last!!"
Gorgeous view, beautiful, comfortable apartment!

This was a beautiful, clean, apartment with a breathtaking view! It was well equipped and close to the bus, restaurants, shops, and attractions. The bed was large and comfy, and the bathroom had a great shower!
The walk down to the water was quite steep, but it was easier than walking back up! We got used to it by the end of the first week, and actually enjoyed the exercise.
We cooked several meals in the 2 weeks we were there and found the BBQ to be excellent. We took our laptop and were able to email the property manager if we had any questions. She or her assistant always got back to us in a timely way and they were extremely accommodating and helpful.
There were maps, transportation schedules and tips for sightseeing, as well as binoculars and several books for our use. We enjoyed having wine on the balcony while watching the cruise ships in the distance.
We took the train to Ventimiglia and Monte Carlo (fabulous!), and the bus to Nice (great shopping) and Beaulieu Sur Mer. There is a larger grocery store in Beaulieu Sur Mer just behind the Tourism office, but the petit Casino in the old village was great for the basics.
We loved The Hotel Welcome wine bar for drinks, Le Cosmo for dinner (try the tuna), La Piazza for lunch (the pizza was excellent), and the Internet Cafe (behind the Hotel Welcome) for an inexpensive mid afternoon beer or wine.
We found two restaurants in Beaulieu Sur Mer that we liked for lunch as well, Cafe de l'Agave and Chicoree.
The walk around Cap Ferrat took us about 3 hours to do but it was well worth it. The views were spectacular! (Wear good shoes!)
We met a lovely couple from California during our second week (they were our neighbors in the larger apartment next door). We had dinner with them a few times and they were kind enough to invite us to join them when they drove to Eze. The views from the patio of the Chateau de le Chevre d'Or were unbelievable, as were the prices in that restaurant! We did get some great pictures there!
This was a wonderful vacation for us, and a perfect way to celebrate our 30th anniversary!
A final tip: if you don't have a car, get the property manager to arrange a taxi for you to and from the airport in Nice. It is well worth the money and the convenience!
We would definitely return, and we will gladly recommend this apartment to others.
Summer 2009 La Belle Epoque

Date of Stay: July 2009
We stayed at La Belle Époque for a week in July 2009. The apartment is everything it is advertized to be: elegant, convenient, clean, well-appointed and private. The pictures on this web site are very accurate and show the apartment exactly as we found it. There is a flight of stairs to negotiate but in hilly Villefranche, that's nothing. Bring your walking shoes and get ready to climb the beautiful hills. The view of the old town and harbor is stunning and is a beautiful way to start the morning. Susan was very helpful upon check- in and check-out and gave us great information on the apartment and things to do on the Rivera. Car parking is a challenge but is manageable - look further up the hill - there are always places. Many good restaurants and shops are close by. The grocery is just up the street. We highly recommend this property.
La Belle Epoque, des belle vacances

Date of Stay: November 2008
We stayed for a month and it was delightful. We loved the apartment, the view, the comfort, the facilities, and the perfect condition in which we found everything. Villefranche-sur-Mer is one of the most beautiful places we have ever visited and this was our third stay in the town. It has a lovely, friendly ambience and is mostly unspoilt by modern development. In spite of arriving in mid-November we have had only four days with rain and plenty of days of sunshine, when we did lots of walking to Beaulieu and to Port St Jean and on the footpaths around Cap Ferrat, where the scenery is breathtaking. For going further around the coast, the train service is fine and the station is nearby. As we have been working as well as holidaying here, the broadband access has been invaluable. We have enjoyed the DVDs and books you have provided, and the barbeque on the balcony was a great bonus. The decor is charming and the wardrobe in the bedroom really useful. As owners of a holiday place in Australia, we can see that you have put a lot of thought into setting this up. Thankyou for your excellent apartment and thankyou to the manager who was very welcoming and very helpful.
Sea view--Charming location!

Fabulous view of sea in picturesque setting. Impeccably clean, convenient to beach, restaurants, train station. Great base for touring the Coast. Internet access. Terrific host provided tourist, travel, apartment orientation information; very gracious and accommodating. Though climbing steep pathway/stairs throughout Villefranche is part of its charm, must be able to do so to reach apartment.
''My husband and I spent the last week in June at ''La Belle Epoque'' apartment. We absolutely loved it. It is very well equipped, spacious and clean, exactly as the website describes. It has a very large balcony that is sun drenched from early in the morning until mid afternoon. The views over the bay are amazing and it is particularly lovely in the evening to sit with a glass of wine watching the ships sail away and experiencing that feeling of complete relaxation.Villefranche-sur-mer is lovely with a village atmosphere yet great for getting around the Cote d'Azure by train or bus. We enjoyed the walk down through the old town, especially early in the morning when we went for a morning swim. When we arrived home we immediately booked this apartment for next year for two weeks. You couldn't give it a higher recommendation than that!" A & A Lancashire UK. June '08
''Our stay at "La Belle Époque" in Villefranche was unforgetable. We've been to Villefranche a couple of times already and love this place. The apartment was exactly as described. We found the the best parts to be the nice and rather quiet location, the fantastic view, the big terrace and the close distance to the beach and to several nice restaurants for dinner. We will definitely be back!" Helle S. Norway. July '08
Great location for exploring the region. We spent 3 weeks in this apt. April/May 2008 and really enjoyed our stay. It was as advertised, no nasty suprises. It is newly renovated, bed (queen size) very comfortable, kitchen fully equipped. Best of all is the view from the 'terasse'. We really miss getting up in the morning and checking on the cruise ships at anchor in the bay. Lots of restaurants, good bakeries, green grocers and general grocery stores within walking distance and also a nice beach area. Highly recommended property. Recommended for ; romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, Car unnessary. John & Debbie, Canada. April 2008.
Very nice apartment. Descriptions are accurate. The apartment was well cleaned, and the bed was very comfortable with a view of the Lighthouse. location very convenient - it took 10 minutes to walk to the Institute Francais. One thing I really appreciated were the good reading lights by the bed and having the internet was great also. Kim California March 2008.
La Belle Vie. The apartment was every bit as lovely as it looks on the website. My husband and I spent two wonderful weeks at La Belle Epoque. We loved relaxing on the balcony looking out on the Bay of Villefranche and Cap Ferrat, The morning sun was glorious. The apartment was well equipped and the manager was great at explaining where everything was. The location is fantastic! You can walk to the waterfrount, the shops and restaurants, the bus stop, the train station, 'Institut de Francais' ....everywhere you will want to go is an easy walk! Strongly recommended. Laure, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, March 2008
Excellent holiday-home. Wonderful views from newly renovated apartment. well equipped, elegantly furnished, excellent bed. Recommended for; Adventure seekers, Girls getaway, Sightseeing without a car, Romantic Getaway. Ocstavie, Finland March '08
Lovely apartment. well placed - a short walk down to the beach. if you haven't been to Villefranche then go. Nice is a short bus ride away and Villefranche town is much nicer to stay in than Nice. Good restaurants and local walks. Apartment was clean, well equipped and with friendly service. PB-CB Bristol July '07
