Enjoy the charm of a bright and airy French Riviera apartment in the pretty medieval town of Villefranche-Sur-Mer. This recently renovated apartment offers the rare combination of a superb sea-view terrace with the charm and facilities of living in an old-world town being a 5 minute walk to shops, restaurants and bus stop. As soon as you enter the apartment, you are met by a burst of colour --'' Eclat de Couleur '' of the beautiful Bay of Villefranche. You will be enchanted watching the changing colours of the Mediterranean against the backdrop of Cap Ferrat, the haphazard pattern of the '' Provencal '' terracotta roofs, the arrivals and departures of the cruise ships and constant activity of small craft in the Bay.

This is one of five exclusive apartments in Villa St Remi on Ave. Gallieni, with an excellent location, close to shops / restaurants / bus stop / car park and Institute de Francaise. The safe sandy beach is a ten minute walk away through pedestrianised medieval streets.

Situated on the first floor, the entrance-hall and stairs are bright, wide and gradual. The lounge is spacious (18 sqm) and airy with high ceilings and opens onto the terrace (10 sqm) through fully retracting 'french' doors. The terrace enjoys 270 degree views of the renowned Bay of Villefranche overlooking the terracotta roofs of the medieval town, towards the sandy beaches and the Mediterranean beyond.

The master bedroom with double bed adjoins an en-suite bathroom. The second bedroom, with two single beds has the use of a separate bathroom with shower.

This quality apartment is furnished with comfortable furniture, a modern electric kitchen and a comprehensive range of cooking utensils for self catering. It is fitted with air conditioning, electric storage heating for winter evenings and has attractive, easy cleaned tiled flooring through-out.

Imagine dining al fresco or sipping an aperitif on the spacious terrace, watching the twinkle of the distant villas on Cap Ferrat. Relax on the glorious beach while the children build sand castles, or explore the rocks in the expectation of catching that elusive fish. And what about the wonderful coastal walks. For enthusiastic hill walkers there are wonderful marked trails in the foothills of the Alps. It is an ideal base for a family holiday or a group of four adults.

Accommodation consists of a large lounge, which opens onto a south-east facing terrace (10 sq m) through full-length retractable glazed doors. There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms, one en suite. The kitchen is open plan, and is in a recessed area off the living area.


The lounge is furnished with a sofa for two, four wicker armchairs, a lounging chair and a table seating four. There is a TV incorporating DVD, CD and radio. The TV receives "free to air" channels and French terrestrial channels. There is a small selection of CD's, DVD's and paperbacks some board games and a pair of binoculars.


The master bedroom has a queen size double bed, 60 in (150 cm) wide X 75 in (190 cm) long, with a firm comfortable mattress, two bedside tables and reading lamps. The en suite bathroom has a well-lit vanity unit, a bath with glass enclosed shower, a toilet, bidet and heated towel rail.

The second bedroom has two single beds, 35 in (90 cm) wide X 75 in (190 cm) long, a bedside locker and reading lamps. The adjoining bathroom has a bright vanity unit, a spacious shower and toilet. Both bedrooms have large fitted wardrobes and full-length mirrors.

Bed linen and a full set of towels including a large beach towel is supplied for each guest.


The all-electric kitchen is fitted with a four ring ceramic hob, extractor, a self-cleaning oven with grill and a microwave. There is a dishwasher, a washing machine and a fridge-freezer.

There are a full range of new pots, pans and utensils for cooking for a family with cutlery and tableware for ten. There is an electric coffee maker and toaster.


The south-east facing terrace catches the sun until late afternoon. It is ideal for sun bathing being private and not over looked. It is furnished with two sun chairs, four garden chairs, a drinks table, and a gas BBQ (gas supplied) and is fitted with an electrical retracting sunshade. The dining table can be moved onto the terrace for al fresco dining.

There is pay parking in a municipal car park 100m away where there is a nominal charge between 9.00am and 7.00pm. Other times are free including Sundays. There is also limited street parking outside the apartment.


The apartment is a five minute walk from the bus stops ''Barmasa'' or ''Octroi'' which is the principle stop in the village. We never hire a car when in Villefranche. We use public transport, both bus and rail, which are frequent and unbelievably cheap. We use the bus to go everywhere and it is great value at 1.50Eur for a ten km zone around Nice. The 1.50€ ticket can be used for connecting trips (including the city tram) within 74 minutes of first validation. For longer trips to Cannes or Antibes to the west, or Monaco or Ventimiglia in Italy to the east we use the train. We make daily excursions in both directions along the coast and up into the mountains also, as we are enthusiastic hill walkers.


The south facing sandy beach which is 1 km long, is very safe and clean. It is 500m from the apartment, a walk of ten minutes through the pedestrianised streets of the Old Town and not crossing any busy thoroughfares. It is supervised by lifeguards during the Summer season. Snorkeling and sub aqua diving is very popular and equipment can be hired or purchased in Villefranche.


**A municipal kiddies playground which is 500m from the apartment. It is very well equipped and maintained.

**The Citadel, a Savoy Fort, is now an art museum and open air cinema in summer.

**Villa Rothschild on Cap Ferrat is well worth a visit for its magnificent gardens, musical fountains and excellent

cafe. It is a pleasant 30 minute walk from the apartment or a 10 minute bus trip,(bus 81)

**Flea Market every Sunday by the harbor.

**Local produce market every Saturday and Wednesday at Octroi bus stop.

**Monaco which is a 15 minute train / bus ride is always a very popular day trip.

**Nice for shopping, art museums and the Old Town

**Ventimiglia over the border in Italy has a very large market on Fridays and is an hours journey by train from Villefranche.

The French Riviera - Cote d'Azur region

Villefranche lies in the heart of the French Riviera between Nice and Monaco. Imagine an old medieval village with tiny narrow alleyways and steps winding steeply down to the quayside. Here the pace of life has slowed down – people have time to sit in cafes and restaurants, enjoying the superb French cuisine and the wonderful “old fishing village” atmosphere. Others stroll along the 1km promenade and crescent sandy beach and bay set between Cap Ferrat and Mont Boron.. This is Villefranche, nestling at the foot of the hills where the Alps finally meet up with the Mediterranean.

The attractive old town of Villefranche hasn't changed much over the centuries but in spite of this it is a real place where people live and work with all modern amenities, while managing to preserve a definite village atmosphere. The Boulangerie or Greengrocer is a great meeting place every morning where locals joke and discuss their problems. Fresh fish caught by the local fishermen can be bought on the quayside and the clink of the boules on a lazy summer afternoon gives a distinctive French flavour to the village atmosphere.

Families love the sandy beach because it's so safe for children and both young and old can be seen trying their luck fishing off the rocks. For the more activity minded there is scuba diving and a diving school, or you can just hire a boat and snorkel along the Cap Ferrat promontory. There is golf at La Turbie, which is inland from Monaco and a twenty-minute drive away. Not forgetting walking some of the wonderful way marked trails in the hills that form the backdrop to Villefranche or along the many coastal routes.

The 'Alps Maritimes' create a wall of mountains which shelters the coastline from the cold north winds in winter and allows the Cote d'Azur east of Nice enjoy a wonderful climate – mild sunny winters and the breeze from the sea in summer ensures that it doesn't get unbearably hot. Consequently, this area is a gardener's paradise with it's a unique microclimate where you will find many exotic plants and shrubs. No wonder that the Victorian aristocrats and artists loved it. They flocked to this area for its gentle climate and stunning scenery that the area has to offer.


Historically Villefranche developed as an important duty-free port in the 14th century and latter on in 18th century it became a strategic military base for the house of Savoy. The Duke of Savoy's Citadel is still very much intact, housing not only the Hotel de Ville but also museums of Volti sculptures and paintings by Jean Cocteau both associated with Villefranche. In summer it is the venue for an open-air cinema. Cocteau also re-decorated the Chapelle St Pierre with frescoes as a gift to the fishing community who used to store their nets there.

Within walking distance of Villefranche, the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild and the Villa Kerylos can be visited – the former being famous for its villa and furnishings, splendid gardens, musical fountains and views. It's a great place for afternoon tea. The latter being a reproduction of a 5th c. BC Grecian villa – a must for those interested in Classical Greece.

Many of the magnificent villas from the Victorian era survive and some now house important museums and art galleries. For example, Matisse who lived in Nice, left the city a priceless collection of his works and these are displayed in the Matisse museum – an exquisite late 17th century Genoese villa. There is the Renoir museum in Cagnes-sur-mer just west of Nice and a refurbished Picasso collection in Antibes.

"Relaxing, quality, and above all rejuvinating time here"

This holiday was just what we needed, everything in its place apartment spotless and suited our needs. The balcony gets the morning sun and with the awning can be toned down to just so. We walked around the local area and took in some sights further afield, everyone friendly and affable with that certain French aplomb. Especially enjoyed the area of eze with views that were stunning. Monaco and Monte-Carlo were where the rich hang out and shows just how the other half live the life! Eamon et al have done themselves proud with a fantastic apartment in a wonderful location , would highly recommend to all. We will be back soon thanks. Martin & Jane

"All you could ask for - and with views over the bay."

The apartment is furnished and equipped to the highest specifications. Its major feature is its expansive terrace divided from the main area by floor-to-ceiling sliding windows. So the mediterranean sunshine floods the apartment from breakfast time right through till sunset. And the view? The sky, the bay of Villefrance and the roofs of the old village. Within walking distance is a wide range of restaurants. If your visit includes a Saturday, don't miss the chance to buy local produce at the market which is held only 5 minutes away from your front door. A word of caution: be ready for some exercise. You can't get back to the apartment from the promenade without a stiff climb.

The 'floor-to-ceiling sliding windows' are fully retractable making the lounge part of the terace. The 'stiff climb' is a 50m climb up gradual steps or along the footpath which is more gentle. Eamon & Eileen

"A great view and fabulous location!"

We loved our stay at Éclat de Couleur. It is perfectly located to explore this area of the French Riviera and the hinterland villages, being close to both bus and train public transport options, and yet very quiet and peaceful compared to busy Nice. We found living at the top of the charming old town of Villefranche absolutely delightful - walking out daily to pick up baguettes and bakery treats, as well as frequenting a few of the charming restaurants. The apartment had a breathtaking outlook over Cap de Ferat and the old town, and was very well stocked with all the essentials we could need. Eamon was very accommodating when we needed it, and punctual in responding to our enquiries. We tried the recommended Oliviera restaurant in Nice and fell in love with it, and the very passionate owners. Highly recommended! We also visited the villages of St Paul de Vence and Eze... both were charmingly beautiful and quiet in the ' off season'. Finally we enjoyed many walks - including to Villa Rothschild, and following the stunning pathway around Cap de Ferat. We would not hesitate in staying here again, and indeed hope that one day we will be able to return! Mette and Brad Jongeling ( and our 3 teenagers), Perth, Western Australia

"Art Museums easily accessible from Villefranche"

I have stayed in Eclat de Couleur before and thoroughly enjoyed it. Coming in mid March we so enjoyed some sun. We sometimes had breakfast on the balcony and a picnic on the beach. This time three of us had the specific aim of visiting art museums in the area. The South of France is considered the most important centre for art after Paris. So many museums are easily accessible from Villefranche. Transport is excellent and inexpensive. While staying for a week we managed to visit the MUsee Matisse at Cimiez, a short bus ride from Nice (no.17), the Musee Picasso in Antibes (38 mins. by train from Villefranche) and Fondation Maeght in St Paul de Vence ( 55 mins. on bus 400 ). Sadly, we missed the Chapelle Matisse in nearby Vence which is closed on Friday and Sunday. In Villefranche itself one has the Chapelle Jean Cocteau and the Volti sculptures in the fortress. There are so many more one can visit: Museum of Modern Art, Nice Musee National de Chagall, Nice Musee Bonnard, Le Canet Musee de Beau Art, Nice Musee Jean Cocteau, Menton

"this should be your first choice"

this property is exceptional, well located and convenient to shopping, restaurants, transit and most importantly, it enhances the experience of staying in Villefranche. The apartment itself is very well maintained, spotlessly clean and is outfitted with quality furnishings and appliances. There are two bedrooms/two baths. The master bedroom has an ensuite bath, the second bedroom has an adjacent bath. The view is spectacular! The sliding glass doors to the large deck open fully to showcase the wide view from both inside and out. It's a lovely spot to relax with a book and glass of wine after a day of exploring or just to watch the activities in the bay, check out which cruise ships are in when you get up in the morning and soak up the sun. We have stayed in Eamon and Eileen's adjacent one bedroom apartment twice and recommend it equally as enthusiastically. We have always found Eamon very easy to deal with, he replies promptly to questions and has options for payment which make international transactions easy. Sue, the manager, is a tremendous help and has as a wealth of information about the area to share. We will definitely return to one or the other of these apartments depending on how many are in our party. Renting from Eamon and Eileen will always be our first choice.

"A most comfortable apartment with a view to die for!"

We spent a week in this lovely apartment, and the weather could have been better but the apartment and it's convenience to the amenities made up for this. We walked to Cap Ferrat and Beaulieu, took the bus and train to Nice, Monaco and Ventilmillia. There was much to do without need for a car, the taxi met us at Nice Airport and Sue was waiting at the apartment with helpful advice and guidance. It would be difficult to fault such a well maintained apartment, and everything was spotlessly clean. The restuarants and bars of Villefranche were all near at hand and the terrasse with a view over rooftops to the blue Mediterranean cheered us on rainy days.

"can't wait to return"

we have stayed in this superb apartment twice now, once in winter months, most recently in September/October for a month each time. Each season has its own charms, both were most enjoyable and were enhanced by the quality of the apartment. It was a delight to wake up and see from every room the cruise ships that were in the harbour. The air in Villefranche is extraordinarily clear so the wide view from the balcony to the town and harbour below let us enjoy the view with a glass of wine after a day out and about. The apartment is spotless and meticulously maintained. It is complete with all amenities including a washer, dishwasher, stove, fridge, etc. There is wifi so we were able to connect with the internet whenever we pleased. The apartment is close to shops, restaurants, three boulangeries and excellent public transit. It is about a 15 minute bus ride into Nice, about 20 minutes the other way into Monaco. The first time we stayed, we rented a car that we ended up using only three times. For our most recent visit, we had learned our lesson and had no difficulty getting around by efficient and affordable bus or train. We can say without reservation that this is the best of many vacation rentals we have stayed in, in many countries and we intend to return again.

"Wonderful, loved it, would recommend to anyone. perfect location!!"

This property is perfect. First of all, the master bedroom is roomy and has a great onsuite. The other bedroom is also great with two double beds. Both bathrooms were perfect. I love to cook and this place will not let you down. All appliances are new and work great. There is a BBQ which I used almost every night. Although we ate out for lunch, I enjoyed shopping at the local market and at the local butcher shop. The butcher is a great guy and is only a short walk down the street. The views from the deck is breathtaking. You can also open the patio doors and you have a huge balcony!!! Our family had a wonderfull time in Villefranche Sur Mer and would return again. The people there are very friendly and ready to help. This brings me to the people who take care of this place. They are also wonderfull and helpful. Again nothing bad to say. Only positives!! It is worth mentionning that this is not our first time renting an appartment and so my review is based on past experiences. This appartment has been renovated perfectly with absolutelly nothing missing. As a Canadian, I did not want for anything. The coffee maker was just like home so we were able to have a pot over the deck each morning. The croissant however were not like home, they were wonderfulll! "Comfortable, Convenient, and oh, my-The View!"

As a senior couple we found the property ideal for a month stay. With two bedrooms and two baths the extra room over time was appreciated even though we didn't have guests. Likewise the fully outfitted kitchen, including a washing machine, enabled us to really settle in. That everything is of a very good standard reinforced our decision to stay there. (A month would be a long time to have such regrets.) Also, prior to booking, any questions about what to expect were handily dealt with by the owner, then more practical info upon arrival by the manager. Both suggested using Jean-Frederick's taxi service to meet us upon Nice airport arrival and departure. I agree, and wouldn't economize by training or busing unless you 'know the ropes'. Another point regarding our age and this apartment is that its shallow riser staircase is an advantage- not the case in all apartments, so check; and, at no time did we feel vulnerable in the apartment, or walking about Villefranche. Since we were car-less for a month we often made the short walk down the street to the bus stops, soon forgetting about the schedules as bus 100's into Nice or towards Monaco are just so frequent; they're also comparably clean with courteous drivers, offering the best deal along the Cote d'Azur at one Euro per trip. At the end of a 'hard' touristic day it certainly felt good returning to Villefranche, and to the beautiful view of it from Eclat de Couleur.

We were delighted that our guests from North America found the apartment 'to be ideal for a month's stay' in Jan / Feb '12. We are particularly pleased that they found 'everything of a good standard', the stairs to be an easy climb to the first floor and that they felt safe in Villefranche. Eamon & Eileen

"A most wonderful apartment in beautiful Villefranche Sur Mer!"

We had the absolute most fabulous time on the gorgeous French Riviera and in Villefranche Sur Mer! This location is center to the Riviera and we found it to be the most charming little town with easy access by train or bus to the other seaports. Villefranche has many stone steps and inclines that lead down from this apartment to the waterside. I was concerned because I have a disc issue in my back and a muscle condition in my left leg. But the walk down was never a problem since the stairs are wide and the inclines slope gently in several areas. The stairs up to the apartment are also easy to navigate even with larger luggage. When you enter the apartment you will be so excited to see how lovely it is with a beautiful view of the bay from the main room and its adjoining terrace! There is a dining table where meals and snacks can be enjoyed while you take in the gorgeous sights of birds, boats, the moonlight glistening on the water at night and the glorious morning sun! This apartment is very clean, comfortable and very tastefully furnished. The bed and linens were super comfy and the bathrooms very roomy, with a tub and shower in the master. Lots of closet space and a nice TV with good reception on English stations are a real plus.The kitchen is well equipped and there are towels and beach items provided. The bakeries, shops, and restaurants are very easy to get to and the beach as well, though a little bit longer a walk. Eamon and Eileen provide a large selection of guides, maps, and recommendations for your stay. They also have a wonderful apartment manager and driver to assist your arrival and departure. We also were able to visit their other apartment next door and though smaller, it is lovely as well. We appreciated all of Eamon's help when booking the apartment. These owners really maintain their rental units well and obviously care about their clients comfort! Our favorite excursion was to beautiful Monaco! Take the city bus tour once there and spend some time up by the Palais Princier. We also loved going by bus to neighboring St. Jean Cap Ferrat. Do not miss the tour of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild and its gardens! Absolutely a paradise! We did not have a bad meal at any of the restaurants on our stay! All of the merchants in Villefranche were extremely friendly and helpful. And "Maria's" baguettes are the best with fresh butter and jam! (down the first hill from the apartment) We had a very fun, relaxing and exciting stay here even in the cooler October air. We can't wait to return!!!
