The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur region
Nestling between the foothills of the Alps and the shore, Nice has a microclimate of its own with more than c. 300 days of sunshine a year. At its best it's quite possible to swim in the sea and ski on the same day!
Apart from visiting the coastal neighbours of Antibes, Cannes, Monaco, Menton and even the towns of the Italian Riviera (San Remo), visiting the hinterland and the perched villages of Vence, St. Paul - even St.Agnes( the last town on the Maginot Line with one of Frances three preserved Mediaeval gardens) is rewarding.
Nice has something for everyone - Culture - Museums and Galleries; History - The Old Town; Shops, Restaurants, Markets, the Alps, the Beach !
Villefranche Sur Mer
Phoenicians, Greeks and Barbary Pirates have fought here. Artists, writers, politicians and Queens have relaxed here.
Nice is steeped in history, and there are many books, guides and tours on the subject.
There's a tangible Corsican and Italian influence due to the fact that Nice was part of Liguire and only rejoined France in 1860.
It is the fifth largest City in France, and the second most popular destination with more than 4.5m visitors each year, drawn by the climate, sea, and attractions. The airport is the second busiest in France and there are excellent links by train, bus and helicopter. It also has the largest number of museums and galleries after Paris, the most popular of which are the Matisse, MAMAC, and Chagall. Opera and ballet performances in the Belle Epoque operahouse are sold out.
Each February, as if to herald the spring there is the annual Carnival with its colourful parades to rival the Mardi Gras and Rio carnival!
