About the home
Villa Hippocampo is our family’s dream home in the south of France.
Fifteen years ago, we fell in love with the Côte d’Azur and since then have made sure to return here at least annually. We rented a series of homes in Villefranche-Sur-Mer and Saint Jean Cap Ferrat until one day it occurred to us that we'd like to own here permanently.
And who wouldn’t? With a year-round sunny, temperate climate, great beaches in one town after another, charming villages with wonderful weekly produce and antique markets, and the cosmopolitan city of Nice minutes away, the area has so much to recommend it.
By this time we knew the area well. Concentrating on Villefranche, we waited for the right property to open up. It needed to be an easy walk into the village, yet high enough up the hillside to offer sweeping views of Villefranche Bay. After three years of searching, the ideal location became available.
We worked with an architect to make sure that the house we built would feel open and spacious, that we would fit the maximum living space (200 sq. m.) onto the site through the use of multiple levels, that the pool and decks would be inviting, and that the house would welcoming. We outfitted the house with the things that we think you would want in a home, because we want them too: wireless broadband Internet; an intercom system; flat panel TV in every room; a Nespresso machine in the kitchen; high-quality furnishings. We put in fun stuff too, like the playroom/extra bedroom that features colorful lighting and a below-ground window looking out into the swimming pool.
We take care of our home, and we expect that you will too. But we also know that no one enjoys vacations where they have to tiptoe around the fragile bibelots dotting the premises. We've taken care to make the house comfortable and livable.
We feel confident recommending the house and the area to you as a vacation spot because we know there is something here for everyone. We've vacationed in this area as a couple, we've been here with small children, we've been here with pre-teens and now we come here with teenagers. Our eighty-something-year-old parents have vacationed at our new house here on their own and love it as much as we do.
Our price includes maid service, as well as access to a local property manager who will assist with any issues that arise. We can provide you information on babysitters and other services you might need. And of course we will leave you information on some of the wonderful local restaurants and markets.
Whether you are looking to spend your time going to museums and gardens, soaking up the sun on Nice's Promenade des Anglais, reclining on a chaise lounge next to our pool or at the beach, or lingering in small cafes, we think you will love your vacation at Villa Hippocampo.

The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region

We think our villa's location on the Côte d’Azur is really perfect. Located a few minutes from Nice, the area benefits from an ideal Mediterranean climate throughout the year. And, though it seems hard to imagine one could ever tire of the immediate locale, holidaymakers who wish to venture farther afield have a rich set of choices for day trips.
Beyond Nice, the sunkissed Riviera cities of Cannes, Antibes and Juan les Pins are still only a half-hour's drive from Villa Hippocampo. These cities offer museums, festivals, and much fun activity.
Inland, visit Saint-Paul-de-Vence. This fortified medieval hilltop village, a favorite of Picasso, Matisse, and numerous other artists, is home to the Fondation Maeght, the world-renowned museum of modern art and sculpture.
In the opposite direction, going east from the Villa, a half-hour's drive past the sunny town of Cap d'Ail will bring you to the Principality of Monaco. In Monaco you may wish to tour the palace, visit the Oceanographic Museum formerly directed by Jacques-Yves Cousteau, or perhaps enjoy the casinos.
Italy -- With the border town of Ventimiglia a drive of only a half hour from Villa Hippocampo, you are able to make easy day trips to Italy. An afternoon outing can bring you to medieval inland towns with olive grove forests, then perhaps dinner in Alassio along the Italian Riviera, or gaming in the city of Sanremo.
Farther afield, but still an easy drive from Villa Hippocampo, are:
-The ferry ride from Cannes to the lovely Lérins Islands archipelago. With the ride running only about fifteen minutes each way, we've found this to be an easy outing. The kids enjoy visiting the fort and we love walking on the pine paths.
- Provence with its lavender fields, Roman ruins and market towns. From the Villa it is a couple of hours drive to Aix en Provence and an additional half hour to continue on to Avignon.
-The perfume center of Grasse, about an hour's drive inland from Nice or Cannes. We enjoy visiting the perfume workshops and lunching in the beautiful Old Town.
-St. Tropez: This glamorous movie star hangout is just over an hour's drive from the Villa.
-Finally, in the winter there is the option of skiing in the southern French Alps. The closest resort to the Villa, at a distance of perhaps one and a half hours, is Isola 2000.
The Villefranche Sur Mer area
The village of Villefranche-Sur-Mer is just a walk down the public stairway from Villa Hippocampo. Villefranche enjoys a lovely public beach with cafes and ice cream stands close at hand. Although a small town, Villefranche also offers at least a dozen restaurants, many of them perched along the harborside overlooking the deep-water port. Also in Villefranche are churches and commercial establishments such as grocery stores, boulangeries, brasseries, cafes, banks, pharmacies and the like, distributed along an appealing pedestrian maze of narrow streets and squares.
Adjoining towns along the Riviera are also appealingly character-laden.
Beaulieu-Sur-Mer, a charming town a few minutes' drive east, also has a yacht harbor, restaurants, boutiques, a supermarket, and many restaurants, among them our favorite pizza restaurant, Le Catalan.
South of Beaulieu is the lovely peninsular village of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, famous for its luxury villas and gardens and serene pine forests. We love the waterfront walk between Beaulieu and Saint Jean Cap Ferrat along the paved Promenade Maurice-Rouvier. It takes about thirty minutes, winding between the seaside below and the walled villa gardens above, and we never tire of it -- for us, it is the quintessential signal that we are 'home' in France.
The palazzos of Villa Kerylos in Beaulieu and the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat are national museums offering lovely gardens and gorgeous artwork. Children will enjoy the nearby Zoo du Cap Ferrat, and just down the hill the zoo, the family may wish to roam the grounds and lunch at the famous Grand Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat.
Also minutes away is the picturesque medieval village of Eze, perched on cliffs overlooking the ocean, and host to a couple of top restaurants.
In the other direction of course is the bustling city of Nice, with its many faces. For many, the world famous walk along the wide Promenade des Anglais adjoining the sea is the quintessential memory of Nice. Others enjoy the city's culture and urbanity, including famous casinos and hotels such as the Negresco, and cultural landmarks such as the Matisse Museum, the Russian Cathedral, the Opera House and and the Chagall Museum. We particularly enjoy the charming old city -- Vieux Nice -- well known for its narrow, cobblestoned streets, boutiques and restaurants along with the daily flower market in the Cours Saleya. Our kids love the downtown pedestrian zone around the Place Massena, always hopping with shopping, people watching and street entertainment.
