The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region
Villefranche-sur-Mer is in a village in the heart of the Cote d’Azur ( between Cannes and Monaco.) Created in 1295 by Charles II d’Anjou, this village has kept its picturesque charm with the progression of the centuries. The bold colours of Mediterranean style homes, the small and steep streets and the lack of cars in the old village will bring to mind times past while offering the finest of modern cuisine, art, and scenic views. Villefranche-sur-Mer is blessed with a Mediterranean climate; mild in winter and very warm in summer. Lots of shops, and very good restaurants in the old town.
From the house it is only 30 minute drive west to the Nice International Airport and a 30 minute drive east to the Italian border town of Ventimiglia. It is a 15 minute drive/bus/train ride to the city of Nice and 15 minutes to the country of Monaco. The city of Villefranche-sur-Mer is accessible by train and the station is a five minute walk from the house.
Villefranche Sur Mer / Villefranche Old Town area
Sight seeing in Villefranche sur mer : from history to art and museums, take the time to enjoy Villefranche’s different aspects. Early fortification bastioned example, the Citadel of Villefranche-sur-Mer was built from 1554 to plans by Gian Maria Olgiatti Italian engineer, working for Charles Quint. Since the return of Savoy to France in 1860, the citadel was used as military quartering for the 24th Battalion of the Moutain Light Infantry. After 1945, the fortress is neglected. In 1965, the local council repurchases the citadel. The restoration of the building is undertaken in 1979. In 1981, the local council decided to install there the administrative centre (town hall, police) and arts centre (museums, auditorium, open air theater).
Dark Street - The Rue Obscure is magic place that reveals the medieval atmosphere of Villefranche. Located along the first rampart, the rue Obscure (XIVth century) wasn't covered and formed the continuity of the parapet walk of the soldiers. It allowed the soldiers to circulate and made their operations easier. The street is 130m long. Four doors gave access to the city. Today only the "Portal Robert" remains. Later, an irregular urbanization filled the lake of habitations on the other side of the street, "rue du Poilu". The street is among the listed buildings since 1932.
On the waterfront, decorated by Jean Cocteau. This chapel in Roman style, from the XIVth century, is dedicated to St Peter, the fishermen's patron saint. Place of cult at its beginning, it was used as storeroom for the fishing equipment (nets, ...). It also houses the fishermen's prud'homy. In 1957, after many stays in the Welcome hotel, Jean Cocteau (writer, film maker, painter of the XXth century) decided, with the fishermen's agreement, to redecorate the chapel (outside and inside) as a sign of friendship. You can discover passages of St Peter's life (patron of the fishermen), the apocalypse candelabras (fired in the kilm of Valbonne), local scenes (homages to the Saintes Maries de la Mer and the young ladies of Villefranche-sur-Mer).
And of course, Monaco within 20 min's drive, Nice within 15 min's drive, easy to reach by bus or train, as you'd like. Open market every day in the old town. Beach fun too. Great place for any vacation theme, any time of the year!
