The Midi-Pyrenees region

Aveyron is a land of y myriad of small villages and it is in their narrow streets and busy market squares that you’ll find the true spirit of the region – little wonder that ten of the “plus beaux villages de France” are here.

As you travel across the Aveyron, you’ll notice that the roofs to the village houses change considerably from north to south bearing witness to changing demands of the elements. From the sturdy iridescent lauze of the north that changes colour with the light to the terracotta tiles of the south.

A rich diversity of styles that has evolved over the centuries ; when the medieval sits comfortably alongside the modern. Where the need to bridge a chasm becomes an opportunity to construct a thing of beauty.

Villefranche de Rouergue

Gorges de l'Aveyron et Vallée du lot. Covering a vast zone in the western part of Aveyron, a mosaic of terroirs. At the heart of this land of contrasts, discover the architectural jewels, such as the bastides of Rouergue, (Najac, Villefranche, Villeneuve, La Bastide l'Évêque), and numerous châteaux.

A medieval new town, Villefranche was founded in 1252 by Alphonse de Poitiers, Comte de Toulouse and brother of the King Saint-Louis. Its layout is typical of a bastide town, with regular streets intersecting at right angles and converging towards a central square bordered by arcades, the economic heart to the town. Today, it is the scene of a lively, weekly market. It's only 10 mins. drive away and there you will find large supermarkets, an abundance of excellent restaurants and bars, shops, doctors, dentists, hospital etc., etc.

Throughout the summer there are fêtes in every local village and the local markets are well worth a visit (Villefranche and St. Antonin Noble Val are particularly good ones). There are excellent restaurants within a few kilometres offering superb local cuisine from as little as 19 Euros for a 3 course evening menu and around10 Euros for a lunchtime menu, usually including wine.

The immense Lac de Bannac is less than 5 kilometres away. With facilities for fishing, birdwatching on the nature reserve, acrobranche, pedaloes, crazy golf, snack bar/restaurant, plus picnic areas and entertainment room for themed music evenings throughout the summer , its the ideal place to spend an enjoyable day and/or evening.

Le Domaine des Aliberts is located nearby exceptional medieval towns , villages, abbeys, such as Villefranche de Rouergue, Villeneuve, Najac , Conques, St Cirq Lapopie, Loc-Dieu, which you will visit with the utmost pleasure.
