About this location
The Dordogne region
Aquitaine region / Gironde & Dordogne areas
Aquitaine with its beautiful capital city of Bordeaux, is one of the great historic regions of France. It is also one of the largest and most varied regions of France, stretching from the foothills of the Massif Central in the north, to the Spanish border in the south, a distance of over 300 km.
In the Middle Ages, Aquitaine was allied with the Plantagenet Kings of England, and the region has many historic connections with the British Isles.
Gironde is wine country with Bordeaux at its centre. In total there are 57 wines labelled AOC - Bordeaux, Sauternes, Medoc & St-Emilion to name but a few.
Dordogne is one of the most beautiful and popular destinations within the Aquitaine region. There are many famous sights to visit including the prehistoric caves of Lascaux and Eyzies, les jardins de Marqueyssac (Marqueyssac gardens), Sarlat-la-Canéda (Dordogne's favourite and most beautiful medieval town) and many other sites of interest.
A real plus is that all amenities in Villefranche de Lonchat are within walking distance including a boulangerie (bakery) almost opposite so that you can buy your fresh bread every morning without having to get in the car.
Other amenities include a grocery,a bakery, a post office, two Bar-Restaurants, a pharmacy, a cashpoint and a weekly market.
It is approximately 5 kms (8 miles) to supermarkets where there is also a petrol station.
There are loads of small wine producers close by (caves, châteaux) where one can taste and buy the wine.
Of course the famous town of St Emilion is only half an hour away and offers a beautiful place to visit aswell as the opportunity of purchasing some very special wines.
Exploring the area taking the little roads, you'll come across people selling fresh eggs, honey and other local produce.
Below is a selection of the main activities and attractions close by:
- “Le Lac de Gurson” a swimming lake with a beach and several bar-restaurants (Five minutes by car).
- “Les Marchés Nocturnes” village get togethers where local food and wine producers sell their products to be enjoyed at large tables set out in village squares (every friday evening during July and August in Villefranche de Lonchat)
- “Les Brocantes and Vide greniers” Antique Fairs & Flea Markets.
- “Le Marché de Ste Foy la Grande”. Rated as one of the top 100 markets in France taking place every saturday morning at Ste Foy la Grande.
- "La bataille de Castillon" a spectacular re-enactment of the last battle fought in the hundred years' war which took place at Castillon la Bataille in 1453. This unique event takes place on various dates during July and August and is an absolute must-see.

"A small slice of French village life"
With two children aged 8 and 10 and booking last minute we were restricted for choice. We were lucky to find this house in a little french village, one church, one cafe a market place and 10 steps to the little corner shop and boulangerie. The real joy in the summer heat was having a lake a mile or so away, definately driving (too far to walk with children and all the beach kit!) but it was clean, not too busy, and perfect place to cool down. Also if you paid to go for the day you could come and go as you pleased. The house itself has been really tastefully decorated with all amenities and we had a very pleasant week there. Parking really is easy in the area.
