461 - Elysian Manor
House | 5 bedrooms | sleeps 16
The owners have renovated this old property with style and elegance. The decor is a wonderful blend of old and new in subtle tones of brown, cream and white with exposed stonewalls, huge wooden beams and 3.5m high ceilings; the rooms bask in sunlight from four huge windows and a French door leading out onto the gravel terrace at the front.
As with the whole ground floor of this vast house, the entrance hall is tiled with original terracotta tiles and extends the full width of the house. It accesses the kitchen to the left, and a corridor to two double bedrooms and a loo to the right. The kitchen is a lovely big 40m2 rustic ‘farmhouse' style space, with a large wooden dining table seating 10-12 at centre stage. The cupboards are fitted and line either side of the kitchen with the original old wooden cupboards doors and their thumb latch closing mechanisms. As well as the standard smaller kitchen appliances, other equipment available consists of a stainless steel cooker with double oven and 5 gas rings above, dishwasher, microwave, 2 full size fridge/freezers and an original waist height fireplace, perfect for indoor BBQ. This is a lovely room for culinary creations on a large scale - bearing in mind this wonderful house can accommodate up to 20 guests. You might like to take up the chef services on offer if you fancy a few nights off.The kitchen has two huge windows looking out over the front terrace, allowing parents the opportunity to keep an eye on the children playing outside on the numerous outdoor toys whilst they cook; when it is cooler outside and the kitchen fire is roaring, this huge kitchen can become the social hub of the house.
Dining room/ sitting room
What a wonderful space! This is a huge social area (40m2) to the left of the kitchen, with a dining area and sitting room connected by a big broad opening in the wall between the two, creating an open plan feel - the perfect layout to keep an eye on the children as they play with the toys on offer.
The dining area, like the kitchen, has a big wooden table, this time seating 14, and there is a beautiful white wooden glass cabinet spanning the whole of the back wall, full of beautiful china ornaments (but no risk to children as the glass doors open at waist height). Although there is a big open fireplace at the other side of the sitting room, guests can enjoy wonderful meals around the dining table in the cooler months, warmed by a wood burner on a wall in the dining area too.
The sitting room is located at the other side of this huge dual-purpose space. With three huge comfy sofas, it's a great place for snuggling by the fire and watching a movie in the evenings. There is even a keyboard for songs by the fire should any of the guests be musically talented!
Bedrooms & bathrooms
There are 5 spacious bedrooms in total (4 double bedrooms and a huge dormitory room with 8 single beds). 3 of the double rooms are on the ground floor (perfect for grandparents) and there is one double with the dorm room upstairs.
All the double beds are large comfortable beds of 180 x 200 cm (made up of two single beds pushed together). There are numerous cots available and all the bedrooms could accommodate at least two cots, some 3!
The upstairs bedrooms have one small window each, and the ground floor bedrooms have tall windows or doors; also looking out over the terrace and views. The rooms are large and open, with exposed stonewalls, high ceilings and exposed beams. Their interior decor is a mix of new sleek materials with occasional accents of antiques. All bedrooms (except the dorm room) have iPod alarm clock radios on the bedside table.
The layout of the rooms is as follows (from left to right):
On the ground floor situated next to the sitting room, is a large bedroom of 40m2 with 1 double bed and 1 sofa bed. This is a truly beautiful room flooded with light from two huge French doors leading on to the front terrace, a big fireplace and a private bathroom area within the room consisting of a feature bath with ‘funky' mood lighting in the floor, sink & shower; plus a separate loo. It is also possible to access the under cover seating area with bread oven at the back of the house through a very old stable door from this room.
On the other side of the ground floor and near the entrance hall, there are two large double bedrooms each with extra sleeping capacity in the form of a sofa bed each. One of the bedrooms has its own fireplace and is located next door to a bathroom with bath, shower, sink, loo and baby changing station. The other bedroom has an open bathroom incorporated in the bedroom, but with a separate toilet a little further down the corridor.
The staircase leads from the sitting room to the upper floor landing accessing two bedrooms:
The dormitory room is a huge room, approximately 55m2 in size, with 8 single beds in total; it is ideal for children. It is also incredibly flexible in that it can also be used for adults or a complete family if need be, as 4 of the beds are regular single beds that can be pushed together to form doubles.
The other 4 beds are modern wrought iron junior beds with decorative roll bars to prevent little ones falling out. These beds can be reduced in size to accommodate very young children just out of cots. It is a perfect children's room decorated with canopies in a princess style or a big green leaf! All the bedding is colourful and childish and a teddy is left on every bed for each of the children in your group.
The best bit? There is a disco ball light in the centre of the exposed oak beam ceiling giving off a gentle blue night time twinkle, which automatically turns off after 10mins and there are individual flower side lights on the walls by a few of the beds. So you might even find that they'll be desperate to get to bed! Then there is the toy chest full of toys to keep your cherubs quiet in their room until a more 'holiday friendly' wake up time.
Conveniently located near to the dormitory room and the landing is a spacious double bedroom with double bed, beautifully decorated with a feature wall of empty but beautiful picture frames and stunning exposed beams in the ceiling.
These two first floor bedrooms share a large family bathroom with bath, shower, sink and loo.
Although gated top and bottom, the staircase is incredibly steep. All young children should be supervised on them and parents may need to take great care if carrying a baby down them.
There are two steps up from the landing to the dormitory room. It is advised that one of the numerous nightlights be left on at this end of the room, for children visiting the loo (on the other side of the landing) in the night.
The window in the double room upstairs has a child safety lock, it is very important that the window only be left open (for fresh air) if children are supervised as it is very low to the ground and would be easy to climb out of. There is a large antique wooden cot in the upstairs bedroom. It is advised that guests perhaps refrain from using this cot as it does not conform to modern safety regulations. There are plenty of modern cots available for use.
