The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The South West area of France (Aquitaine) especially the Dordogne and Gironde, offers a climate of good sunshine and consistent temperatures usually around the mid 30 degrees throughout the summer months, so you will find the pool a must !

The region itself is famous for it's Perigourdian Cuisine and fine wines, especially around Bordeaux and Bergerac with famous centres like St Emilion and Pomerol to name but two! The whole area is full of chateaux waiting to offer you a free wine tasting (degustation) and the surrounding countryside, with its many rivers and vines, is an experience not to be missed !

As you may already know this part of France is steeped in history and you would, once again, be hard pressed to find a location as central as Villefranche to use as a base! Old traditional towns like Bordeaux and Bergerac and their respective airports are close to only an hour away. Other well known places like St Emillion, St Foy- la- Grande and Castillon-la-Bataille are only 20 mins! Close by you will find main routes and motorways for places further afield which will reduce journey time!

Villefranche de Lonchat

Villefranche de Lonchat is really well placed to get to all these places! Bergerac and Bordeaux with its many restaurants, shops, museums and theatres are not much more than an hour away and the close proximity of major roads, motorways and train stations makes it really easy to get anywhere!

Villefranche itself is an ancient English Bastide village dating back to the hundred years war. (You can even see a re-enactment of the battle during July/August in the nearby town of Castillon- la- Bataille)!

Within 10 mins of Vine Cottage you have the choice of visiting many other significant market towns like Castillon, Montpon and St Seurin. All these have their own local traditional markets and shops where you can find and sample the huge choice of local cuisine.

Close to the village there is the Lac de Gurson which includes a secure swimming area and a man-made large sandy beach and play area for the children. Around the lake you will find numerous restaurants, bars and additional activities from crazy golf , fishing to horse riding!

Throughout the summer Villefranche also provides many attractions and festivals such as its own 2 day Fete de Canton, a Friday night market and many other special events where all are welcome!

Close by towns like Montpon, Castillon and St Seurin have a mixture of little shops and large hypermarkets for all those holiday needs. All three have their own great day markets where you will find a huge selection of everything French! The region with its many forests and rivers provide a copious choice of outdoor pursuits like fishing, canoeing, cycling and horse riding; many of which are close by as are several golf courses. Ideal for adults and children alike with plenty in the surrounding area to see and do during your stay!
