Villefranche de Lonchat, situated near the world famous wine centre of Saint Emilion, about 10 mins away, has a Friday night market, in the square, with music, dancing, and BBQ, every week during July and August. Plus fete Cantonal, in July, and village fete in August, These markets and fetes, are just far away enough away from Les Martinets, not to cause noise problems!
The Dordogne, rising high in the Massif Central, meanders through some of the most beautiful scenery in France, cutting through limestone gorges, dense forests, lush green meadows and fields of maize and tobacco, which eventully make way for the vinyards of Bergerac and Bordeaux, along the banks are farms, honey stoned villages, medieval towns, magnificent chateaux and fortified'bastides' striking reminders of the Hundred Years War, when under English rule in the middle ages the area was over run with fighting armies. Our pretty village of Villefranche de Lonchat is one of these 'Bastide Anglais'
The Villefranche de Lonchat area
The medieval streets of St Emilion, 10 mins away, are filled with wineshops, jewellers, and restaurants, Bergerac, with its old town, full of intersting shops, tobacco and wine museums, is 40 mins away. Perigueux, is the cultural heart of the region, with its lovely ancient streets wind around its famous five domed cathedral, and the centre is always bubbling with life( 50mins away). The Atlantique beaches are only 90mins away.
Prime attactions- Bordeaux is synoymous with wine. The warm, sunny climate, which favous the ripening of the grapes also makes this an ideal holiday destination with an average temperature of only half a degree less than the Mediterranean. The village nestles between the Bordeaux and Bergerac vineyards, and 'cave' has a good inexpensive range of all the good regional wines. The local vineyards have plenty of wine tasting opportunities!
Bordeaux, itself merits exploringf with its 18c architeture, excellent shopping and restaurants, and at its heart the restored pedestrian-only area of the old city. festivals:La Felibree folf festival is held the first Sunday in July, each year Villefranche hosted it in 1997. There is an iternational folk festival in Montignac, a jazz festival in Soullac, and the village has its fete contanal, in the middle of July, and village fete in the middle of August, all great fun, with plenty to see and do.

We spent 2 weeks at Les Martinets in August and it was one of the best holidays we've ever had. 2 families- 4 adults and 4 almost-grown-up kids-,and there was plenty of space for all of us.... more |

An absolutely fantastic house with everything you could possibly need for a perfect holiday and more. The rooms are large, the bathrooms plentiful and the furniture is so tasteful. It was spotless and well equipped. The pool was a Godsend as the weather was beautiful. It is secluded and has plenty of seats, tables and sunbeds. The house was well situated to visit vineyards, a lake with manmade beach, interesting towns such as St Emillion and Bergerac and a number of reasonable restaurants recommended by the helpful owners who were there if you needed them but not intrusive. The village housed a friendly bar and hotel and held a special night in the village square during the Summer. It also had a bakery, shop, pharmacy doctors etc. I would recommend this beautiful house to anyone; couples, families etc. |

This was our second stay at this fabulous house after spending two weeks of our honeymoon here last year - still the best holiday home we've ever stayed at. The house is in excellent order - large rooms, very well equipped with every home comfort needed and plenty of space to spread out. Out of all the places we've stayed at over the years, it's definitely the one that always feels like a home from home rather than an impersonal rental. By far the best feature is the outdoor space where a completely private garden includes a large swimming pool and poolside patio - it's a superb sun trap and place to enjoy both fun during the day, and al fresco dining in the evening. The location is excellent; the village is beautiful with a couple of good restaurants, local shop, bank and friendly people. Close by are some great local vineyards, chateaux and places to visit. The hosts are the perfect combination of helpful yet unobtrusive, close by but only when needed. We can't recommend this property highly enough for couples and families. |
